+1 puff of smoke for that headline, subby.

2013-02-17 09:30:20 PM
This is a great headline that needs to be used when a new Pope is actually chosen. Also needs an "is".

2013-02-17 09:32:30 PM
The pope himself recently Joined Twitter last year, and now has over 1.5 million followers.

So somewhere Between Niki Minaj and Bruno Mars then?

Dammit, why'd he have to quit so soon?

Now he'll never beat Beiber!

Wouldn't it just be great if the Catholics decided to have a "buddy Christ" moment and tweet the new pope announcement instead of doing the white smoke thing?

as long as they're handing out restrictions maybe doing something about not molesting the children would be a good idea.

Oh fark that - I'm Catholic and I like the ceremony of it all.  I would be open to creating a bonfire in St. Peter's Square, that would be cool.

FIRE!

Because heaven forbid the world finds out thru the social media that the Vatican will be led by another Nazi sympathizer.

On a more serious note...

How is this a surprise to anyone? In conclave, the College of Cardinals has not access to communications of any kind, and even human contact with people outside the conclave is severely limited (to, if memory serves, a servant--traditionally, anyway). Hell, when the popes enter the conclave, essentially everything on their person is confiscated--including mobile phones.

So the cardinals not having access to Twitter comes as no surprise. How could they get on Twitter without so much as a mobile phone?

It's pretty sad when the founding institution of western civilization is reduced to ex-nazis and child molesters....  They used to be corrupt in a way that meant something man!  Simony, indulgences, burnings at the stake for witchcraft and profit!  It's just lame stuff now...

When they chose Benedict the Washington Post had a story about security measures for the conclave, and one of them was adding velvet curtains and a false wall behind each window because the European press were using laser-based sound recorders to try and figure out what was going on inside the room (sound vibration could be picked up by measuring small variances in the windows).

So yeah, this is beyond expected.  I doubt anyone is carrying in an iPad, either.

No, the Roman Empire is the founding institution of Western civilization - the Church is just the parasite that rode the Empire* into the ground, then declared itself the Mostest Important Thang Evvvaaa!

* Interesting thing:  when we talk about the decadence of Rome, most of that was in the 000s and early 100s - the height of Rome's power, not its twilight years.  The weakening and fall came when the Christians started running things - puritainization, not decadence killed the Roman Empire

I'm sure that's taken care of by the fact that only the cardinals and their servants are allowed into the Conclave.  No kids means there's no chance of a cardinal molesting one for the duration.

It's a tough argument, one way or the other, and most of what we know about ancient Rome under the Emperors is from about 00 to 200 AD; after that, the historical record dries up.  It's why Caligula and Nero get so much coverage when talking about "The Fall of Rome" even though the empire kept going for another 300 years.

And in a way, decadence did lead to their fall: their reliance on slave labor meant they never fully developed the labor-saving devices they had the technology for which would have helped them advance as a civilization.

Eh... Rome was interesting, but I would actually argue in favor of the Catholic Church. They system of canon law they developed laid the base for the supremacy of law rather than the supremacy of the king. When you are answering to a law rather than the whims of a king, a law that outlasts the king or any person temporarily filling an office- that's really the foundation of western civilization, and it originated with the Catholic Church. Rome was many things, but it was impermanent- once it collapsed, it collapsed, because it didn't create lasting institutions and frameworks. Just so much dust in the wind. The church took power and created institutions, and created a freestanding, organized body of law. The Romans may have gotten very advanced, but their empire and influenced collapsed, and as a result, wasn't what served to create the western world. When the western world was being created, the Romans were a memory, and the Church was the omnipresent institution.

What attention whoring.  Everyone who cares already knows that the results are kept secret until a new Pope has been picked and officially declared.  The stupid, it irks.

Yeah, but Abrahamic, so closer to Dominican Cock-Swallower's theses.  He could always claim The Code can't be Western, but would have a harder time claiming Judaism was irrelevant to the Church (and had the idea first)

If Hammurabi isn't western, neither is Moses. The areas are pretty damn close geographically.

There is a difference between laws and rule of law. A ruler can impose a law without holding themselves to it. The key is that in a system that honors the rule of law, the law can be imposed against the sovereign. As funny as it is to think about now with the despicable and unaccountable behavior of the church leadership, the Catholic Church pioneered that one.

Seriously, proper explanation of these distinctions is book length stuff, so forgive me if my arguments in fark posts are a little incomplete. If you're interested, I've been recommending "The Origins of Political Order", by Francis Fukuyama, a lot lately.

Listen to that second voice.

You really don't want to know.

I feel like I should be ringing a bell and shouting out "Unclean" every couple of minutes after just looking up the list of "most followed tweeters".

I'm sure actually reading any on their tweets would ruin me utterly.
