mamoru: Trocadero: Just remake Marathon, guys. And while you're at it, go bust open Interplay's rotting corpse and remake Descent.

I would seriously pay good money for a Marathon Trilogy re-release in a modern game engine. I've bought and owned all of the original Marathon games, I've replayed them later through the open-source Aleph One project, but now I want the same games with full-on epic 3D environments. I'd be happy even with an older game engine like Source, but I can only imagine how great they'd be in an even more modern engine. Imagine the level G-4 Sun-Bathing done in UE3!

Seriously, devs. I'd pay full price and pre-order the moment it's announced, provided no crappy DRM aside from maybe Steam. Any takers?

I'm there with ya. They just need to stay true to the original if they did. Biggest question would be, who would you get to voice durandal?

/the story telling was probably among the best of any game, period.
//the starkness and isolation of the player in the environments heightened the situation, too many games are just too cluttered and busy when it adds nothing to the play or story.

Oh FARK yeah!

The contract also reveals for the first time that Bungie is working on a potential successor to its Marathon game, which became a cult hit after it was published in 1994 for the Apple Mac. The document refers to Bungie's right to devote no more than 5% of its staff to develop an action-shooter prototype dubbed Marathon while Bungie remains under contract with Activision.

So looks like bungie actually has been looking at or planning on redoing marathon.

They just won't likely have it done until after their obligations to activision are finished.

myth3 was terrible.

myth2 was the best RTS ever made, to this day.

it was the only game which followed the old axiom of "a small force, when proprerly employed, can defeat a larger one".

i dont know why myth2 was the only game to understand this concept.

all the c&c clones are just 3d flashier stupider versions of themselves, yet always ALWAYS fail tactically.

Myth was a fun game where you could indeed use strategy instead of superior numbers to win.  Placement of your archers and dwarves was always critical to your success.

styckx: No Wii-U version... The frat boy mentality of avoiding the Wii-U is becoming annoying..

I think you mean the third party developer mentality of avoiding the Wii-U. And it's not annoying, Nintendo just doesn't make developer friendly consoles these days. Every dev, save for like 1 or 2, has publicly derided the Wii-U as just a shiate platform that's horrendously difficult, time consuming, and expensive to develop for. Top that off with limited sales for third party games on almost every Nintendo platform since the N64, and it's easy to see why everyone abandons them.

Honestly I'm shocked anyone wasted their time with the Wii-U after watching the original Wii be a cultural phenomenon then drop off the face of the earth with a complete lack of a decent catalog. I had a Wii, kept it for 3 months, realized in that 3 months I had bought numerous 360/PS3 games and like 1 Wii game(that I rarely ever played or wanted to play), and rapidly sold it.

WANTWANTWANT!

I can't tell you how many hours I played the Trilogy. I can hear Infinity's electric guitar intro music in my head right now. Nothing like creating your own house in Forge, or just getting into Anvil and making the most ridiculous of weapon systems. And I know they'd create new levels, but DAMN I would love to see maps like "A Converted Church in Venice Italy", "Welcome to the Revolution", and "My Own Private Thermopylae".

...I hope they got time Pfhor this to be done RIGHT.

ZeroCorpse: Bungie sucks. Everything after Halo (the original) has been nothing worth caring about unless you're a brat who cares about Achievement points. Even the first one was totally derivative. It actually plagiarized whole sections of the ALIENS movie script for the cinematic portions of the game.

They have yet to impress me the way Rockstar or Bioware have in the past. As far as I'm concerned the two most shameless, worthless video game companies on the planet are Bungie and Blizzard (now). All they do now is upgrade the previous model and re-sell it.

Shiat... the best game I've played lately was ORGAN TRAIL, a zombie version of The Oregon Trail.

Oh thank god, I thought I was the only one who hates Halo with the fury of a thousand suns.

I was always so god damn terrible at that game growing up. I think I only made it to level 3 on the original Myth before giving up.

If that were the reason developers avoided Nintendo consoles, they'd also be avoiding the PS3 since Sony deliberately make it hard to develop for.

While true, the problem is third party games on Nintendo consoles also have a notorious history for not selling well. Whereas the PS3 has a large fanbase that thrives on third party games. So when you couple development difficulties with poor sales, there's no reason to continue supporting it. The whole situation is bad enough that some Developers have intentionally canned Wii-U ports of multi-platform games because it's just too difficult to justify the costs involved.

They sold their soul a long time ago. Marathon was Mac only, MAC ONLY! And then they got bought out by Microsoft. That was the cruelest of days, back when there was a very real chance Apple and Macs would go bankrupt and cease to exist. Goddamnit, I'm old.

HALO was originally an RTS - I still remember my 3dFX Voodoo 5500 box showing a Halo screen shot from the top down.  So I guess they sold out way before any of this.

There was an RTS called halo wars, but it didn't make much press.

Once you're rendering in 3d its not an overly complicated affair to shift to a first person viewpoint. ...Assuming you did a good job on the art and didn't have all your levels and missions built.

There's a group trying to rally enough money to buy the Homeworld franchise from what remains of THQ. Not only do they want to make Homeworld 3, but they want to port the original, and possibly homeworld 2, to mobile/tablet platforms.

If they do that, my work day will officially be crushed until the end of time. I could play Homeworld all freaking day 365 days a year. Such an amazing game.

Things I worry about:
FPS MMO.  Since the days of Tribes man has attempted to nail down this elusive beast.  it hasn't happened yet.

Console MMO.  Are there any of these?  Are we talking about porting the Call of Duty kids over to an MMO and attempting to somehow organize that herd of homophobic, racist, tourettes sufferers to raid?  This plan has many glaring and obvious flaw.

Things I like:
Bungie doing sci-fi.  This is good and produces special things.  Shout outs to previous franchises seem evident and could be fun.

Bungie doing shooters.  I recall a quote from Penn Gillette speaking about the death penalty.  If Google handled the death penalty I might reconsider.  The google kids don't seem to fark up much.  Now delete google and insert Bungie ditto death penalty and shooters.

When it comes to Bungie, who the hell knows?

If activision has any say, its going to be cross-platform. But my gut feeling and the timeline makes it sound like they should be hitting the shelf with something around when all the next gens are hitting, and they'll be sticking with it till around when these boxes are burning out.
It would more follow the pattern they've had with halo.

Halo was the killer app for Xbox. Maybe Bungie/activision are taking bidders for some cushy long term deal as one of the next gens killer apps.
I just don't see free online as something that's self sustaining. But the consoles holders will pay the bills if it draws players in droves.

/granted, this is all rampant speculation.

I'll play devils advocate and say your going to be pleasantly surprised... Maybe.

Raids demand teamwork, and the klue klux kiddies tend to not fit in well with that model. They won't tolerate their own company when forced to interact cooperatively for long periods.
I speculate you'll get a fanbase of more mature players, like what you see in RPGs.

interesting
cause i feel like 4 is just Reach - just refined & with faster kill times which made it more like older Halo's (i.e. better)
lots of people biatch about the Armor abilities, but i kinda like them. they add a TON of variety & new ways to play.  and again, they seem more refined than when first introduced in Reach (armor lock comes to mind)

and i feel the variety of maps (non DLC) is better in 4 than in Reach, where everything was just a variant of gray blocks (there is still plenty of the gray blocks in 4 - but it seems to have an edge in variety)

plus Hologram tea-bags  & that NEVER gets old

Final thoughts for posterity.
Biggest hope: This becomes the ever expanding all inclusive adventure FPS mmorpg everyone's always wanted to play.
Biggest fears: Its just Halo under a new label. Activision boils Bungie's bones to scoop out the marrow if it doesn't sell billions in copy (or still manages to screw them over if it does).

/Wishful thinking: Bungie will incorporate RPG elements and finally learn what crouch, run, and aim keys do.
