Looks like they pegged each and every sci-fi cliche.

Yawn.

If only they could resurrect Myth.  Not sure who even owns that IP now.

I suspect Bungie will always bounce back with something new until that one time when something snaps.  Then it is game over.

I am cautiously optimistic, as I've been a big Halo fan since the first game.  The concept art looks great, but when doesn't it?

A console-only MMOFPS?  Pass.

How about World of Marathon. Online. Craft.

2013-02-17 06:30:16 PM
Pardon my ignorance on this, but wouldn't it be better to plan development around the next generation of consoles rather than the current generation?

2013-02-17 06:30:26 PM
Would have much rather seen bungie of old redo some of their original games.

Marathon trilogy would smack halo around like a little biatch if they stayed true to the story and starkness of the situation

Myth series would probably be strategy game of the year if reworked.

I want to believe...

I just can't.

Bungie has a lengthy history of their ViDocs making a future project sound grandoise and epic.  That lasts right up until you play the game. You may even finish the campaign and check out multiplayer, but ultimately it results in a resounding, "Meh.."

Sure, it ends up being a solid game for the most part.  Controls well, has a decent story, but has very little to make it really stand out.  They may have refined some aspects of the genre, but they're really not all that innovative or additive.

Great ability to Hype though.

I think a large part of the flaw in their development agenda is that they seek make the game the way they want it to be, because they're fixated on certain aspects or gimmicks.  It's less about pleasing the fanbase, and more akin to the kid on the playground that makes the game that he wants to play, changing rules on the fly to fit his desires.
They've just got that vibe, spoiled kid who's out to please himself.

Maybe this new game will be better, but I won't be an early player, if a player at all.

Ehh.

You left MS and one FPS sci-fi franchise to go to Activision and create another FPS Sci-fi franchise.

While I'm impressed with their ability to make good money with the switch, I'm less than impressed that they left Halo only to re-make Halo, which is basically Marathon with a twist.

Good:

Bungie
Music guys from Halo returning for this project
That art direction, God damn
supposed connection that brings all of their scifi stuff into one universe (maybe)

Bad:

"WoW in space"
Working with Activision
four yearly releases rather than supporting one game
"We've also taken ideas from STAR WARS THE OLD REPUBLIC"
PC release not confirmed yet, Activision's involvement makes this unlikely

kind of have to know what the next gen consoles will actually have in terms of capabilities and media delivery first. Will it be on par with current computer capabilities? Less? How much less? What kind of UI do they have, how are the new controllers configured? If games are single-user licensed, does that mean games can be installed completely from disc, meaning they can gain space back that is currently used by each console system?

If the console companies aren't sharing that info yet with developers, its kind of hard to build a game for the next gen systems.

2013-02-17 06:39:16 PM
That doesn't interest me in the slightest bit. I'm sure there will be lots of cutscenes and explosions though.

Guess it depends.
You can create the engine for current systems, but have the art assets in various resolutions for a quickie release on next gen platforms. Most of what comes out for the 1st year will be less than optimized for the new hardware.
Then it buys you a few years to make the next game ground up for the new systems.

Activision... Ick.
This is a relationship that will end in tears. Probably with Bungie bankrupt and acti making destiny clones till the market is sick of them.

The project sounds like fun and I'd enjoy me some Sci-fantasy mmo.  But it be fair the result is likely to be underwhelming and this partnership is poorly advised.
Lets wait and see.

I don't think it's frat boy mentality vs looking at the sales numbers and projecting they aren't going to get better with extra competition in '13.

I don't see any gigantic eyeballs on the people in the concept drawings. There's a distinct lack of bright primary colors, too.

Yeah, remember the hype around the first Halo? The whole Ringworld environment, how vast and huge it was all supposed to be, all the room you'd have to tool around and fight in. And then you play it, and it's just another FPS with somewhat large (but still limited) environments.

Hey now, it had decent ideas. The voice acting was nice, and the large, involved storylines (at least compared to other MMO's) were quite nice. Hell, if they hadn't used a crappy, incomplete mess of a third party engine to build a largely unoriginal WoW-clone, it might have been worth paying a subscription fee!

To be fair, Microsoft bought out Bungie to make an Xbox launch killer app from the remains of halo. Once that became a thing, fans wanted more of the same. No expansive exploration game could happen.

I see this project as sort of hitting back towards the original concept with new story material. I'm just hoping to doesn't end with a similar outcome.

I'm not disagreeing, just pointing out that TOR had some good ideas with absolutely horrid execution. They can still take the good ideas.

OK, but how do you get "WoW in space" from a first person shooter?  I'm not making any judgement calls regarding WoW here, I'm just saying that WoW is nothing at all like a fps, even if you have a persistent world and lots of players.

Ah, never mind then.  If their PR is saying that, that makes me even less interested because that means they're confused as to what their own product is.

I so wish I could. Durandal was probably one of the best ambiguous antagonist/protagonist dichotomies ever developed in a video game. Still one of the best depictions of what rampancy could really be like in an AI.

All they need to do is just make a Halo exactly like Halo 1, but with new maps. DO NOTHING ELSE. All other Halo's are garbage and made for little kids. I stopped playing video games November 9, 2004 (the day Halo 2 was released) If they created a Halo like the first one, but just with new maps, I would spend a chunk of change getting the gear to play it.  Otherwise, Halo can suck itself.

That's a shame, Halo 2 is by far the best game they've ever put out with Reach a close 2nd.   Halo was original Xbox demo-ware and 3 was shiatty to put it politely.

Bungie sucks. Everything after Halo (the original) has been nothing worth caring about unless you're a brat who cares about Achievement points. Even the first one was totally derivative. It actually plagiarized whole sections of the ALIENS movie script for the cinematic portions of the game.

They have yet to impress me the way Rockstar or Bioware have in the past. As far as I'm concerned the two most shameless, worthless video game companies on the planet are Bungie and Blizzard (now). All they do now is upgrade the previous model and re-sell it.

Shiat... the best game I've played lately was ORGAN TRAIL, a zombie version of The Oregon Trail.

I would seriously pay good money for a Marathon Trilogy re-release in a modern game engine. I've bought and owned all of the original Marathon games, I've replayed them later through the open-source Aleph One project, but now I want the same games with full-on epic 3D environments. I'd be happy even with an older game engine like Source, but I can only imagine how great they'd be in an even more modern engine. Imagine the level G-4 Sun-Bathing done in UE3!

Seriously, devs. I'd pay full price and pre-order the moment it's announced, provided no crappy DRM aside from maybe Steam. Any takers?

One of the best story lines for a game and the gameplay was awesome. I love the dwarf bombers that could blow themselves up if they didn't throw far enough.

I would love to see a new Marathon game. But only if it had the kind of body count of the original games, and only if intestines, organs, and broken bones flew out when I blow up enemies with rockets.

I realize that may sound bloodthirsty, but it was an important part of the games. The alien enemies were slaves, and totally expendable to the master species. So too were the crew of the Marathon, and you, the player, in the eyes of the protagonist/antagonist Durandal. Both the alien enemy and Durandal had no qualms about putting their pawns into various meat grinders.

As a kid, Myth was way too hard, I'll admit. Now I wish I could play it again. Although the friendly fire was crazy. The bombers should start on the opposite end of the map from the rest of your army.
