Tamagatchi, furby...what's with the crappy 90s toy comebacks? What's next, pogs?

2013-02-17 04:17:58 PM
I was talking to a co-worker the other day about why isn't there a Tamagatchi app on smart phones already.
Seems I should have just waited a bit longer.

I tried one of those things once. Ended up feeling like shiat when the thing died.

As long as I don't have to wait for hours or buy coins with real money, sure. I could use something to check my phone for every so often.

That reminds me, I have a couple neglected Neopets I haven't seen in like five years, they're probably lonely and starving.

I will admit that I've never really understood the distinction on that, either.  I generally avoid eating food that makes me physically uncomfortable...

Simple foods, typically. Meatloaf, mac&cheese, lots of things one gets at Denny's such as biscuits and gravy. Yeah tends to be unhealthy too.

It's food you eat when you're sad, and lonely, and just want to feel better for a while.

In other words, for most farkers:

Meatloaf as comfort food? That's like switching off of sandpaper to use toilet tissue for the Holidays. Subby you should check out 'Bakery' listings in your community, you're in for a world of happiness.

I always thought furbies were kind of neat, especially by the standards of goofy fad toys.

Meatloaf is totally comfort food, in the sense of things that remind you of being a kid and having dinner with your mom or something.  I actually make really good meatloaf. I think it's a highly underrated food.

For some reason, they were serving ground elk meatloaf in the company cafe on Friday.  Seemed a shame of a way to serve elk.

Damn, dude. That's a seriously irrational hatred of meatloaf.  Of course, you have to make it with a proper sauce and do NOT put ketchup on it. That's nasty.

I've never had elk or deer, so I'm not sure how it's supposed to be prepared, but meatloaf does seem like an odd choice.  I like ground turkey or chicken for certain things but they don't work in meatloaf, either.  I feel like that dish has to be made with beef.  (Though for all I know, elk tastes like beef.)

I was cleaning a few weeks ago and found a Tamagotchi  in the unopened packaging. No idea who bought it or why but it is a gen one model. I have WAY too much random stuff show up at my house when cleaning.

If it's really gamey (for those of you unfamiliar with deer/elk, imagine a strong liver flavor), grinding it with beef suet can really take the edge off. Which is better than wasting it. Serve gamey meat in a stew or as steaks, and it can be really tough to fight your way through it.

I have to say, I had this installed for about 2 hours before I had to uninstall it.  It kept bugging me every 5 minutes for some damn thing like food, poop cleanup, interaction.  This is probably why I won't have kids.

There's one called Hatchi on ios and Android that comes quite close.

This. I can imagine how they could basically extort money from people to prevent their little pet from dying.

"For just 99c a day, you can feed your little pet without having to check in every 10 minutes. You don't want them to die, do you? You love your pet, right?"

I'll give this a look if the price is right (which means it's playable without spending real money all the time, I don't mind an upfront fee to buy the app though).

You've also never had GOOD meatloaf, which yes, it does exist.  (Probably my favourite meatloaf variant actually doesn't use hamburger--mix equal parts ground bison and good Italian sausage (preferably freshly ground from the pig), though....ohgod NOM.)

And oddly, I remember not only Tamagotchis, but also remember that Digimon was originally not so much a Poke-clone but rather...well...dueling Tamagotchis :D  (Yes, I actually remember this.  Goddamn but I feel old)

Also remember the Japanese version of the PSX eventually came out with a little handheld Tamagotchi-sized console addon called the PocketStation that plugged into the memory card slot, and FF8 in particular essentially had a PocketStation "mini game" that was essentially Chocobo Tamagotchi...of course the craze had faded by the time it made it Stateside, which is probably for the better...

I don't know what a Warwick Davis is but the app looks quite amusing and worth the free. I'm downloading it now (along with a new update for Hatchi, the one I mentioned above) right now.

Cheers for the lead.
