John Redcorn: Sad Wings of Destiny was Priest's first real "metal" album.

And is, IMO, still their best work.

There is metal outside of the bands with Cookie Monster vox.

I guess you guys don't know this.

SPna15: Also, HighZoolander, I went to high school with these guys, and seeing as how they're just starting to put out stuff, you would probably want to get in on these guys early, as would anyone who like bands like Antediluvian, Beherit, Blasphemy, etc.

Manifesting

Cool - thanks! They are pretty good!

SPna15: Tyrant Goatgaldrakona (Hungarian death metal)

yes. I quite like this.

Also glad to see you on board with Arkham Witch - that album kicks ass!

Madbassist1: HighZoolander: but still Death's version of that song is better).

Nope.

meh-be?

I could flip a coin, but mostly I like Death.

WhippingBoy: I half apologize.
It may be a SHMHC thread, but the topic for the week is Judas Priest.

I'm sor.

The only topic that SHMHC sticks to is metal (and even that is not absolute, as hard/stoner/occult rock gets posted too, and sometimes even punk).

You obviously didn't listen to the stuff on the 3:23 PM post.  You could argue they're more rock than metal especially the first three, but out of those 5 albums, there's only 1 song with anything cookie monster.

This being Fark, I'm surprised there's not anybody in this thread with the mentality of present day Lynard Skynard haters whining about "It's not Judas Priest without Al Atkins and or John Ellis!"

/saw Priest on November 8 2011 in Cincinnati, was an awesome show

farkingismybusiness: Like all metal, Judas Priest sounds better with harsh vocals. Painkiller.

Never been a fan of Death, but those are some ludicrous vocals, Chuck.

Madbassist1: SPna15: This is what we do (the people that contribute regularly) do week in and week out.

Cry like a biatch when the featured link is an act more than 6 people have heard of, with a vocalist who can carry a tune? Yup. Its what you do. Week in and week out.

/NOT subby.

Yep, I sure do hate Judas Priest. That's why Sad Wings is one of my all time favorite albums. Because I hate Priest so so much.

Judas Priest is my favorite band of all time with Iron Maiden comming in at a close second.  Met Priest in 2005 in Atlanta and they were really nice guys.  Considering my friend and I snuck backstage, they didn't have to be.

As far as the whole what is and isn't metal argument, I find it usually being perpetuated by those who think their favorite "sub-genre" of metal is the "real deal".  The problem with "heavy metal" music is its diversity and in my opinion that being identified as a "metal band" has to do with look/image as it does sound.  That is what allows a band such as "Poison" be a "metal band" (sub genre glam/hair metal) or Judas Priest be a metal band (Classical Metal), or Slayer be a metal band (sub genre thrash metal).

Really in my opinion , this diversity of sound is why Heavy Metal is the greatest, most awesome type of music there is.  All metal fans should embrace rather than scorn this "diveristy", because United, united, united we stand.  United we never shall fall.  United, united, united we stand.  United we stand one and all.

When I lived in the San Diego area, I saw Rob Halford a few times around town but never hassled him.  Walking to my car from a coffee shop there, I passed Rob on the sidewalk... At the time I still had long hair, and I was wearing an Iron Maiden shirt.  We met eyes, gave each other a nod and kept on walking.  I've never felt cooler in my life lol.

Another anecdote:

One year in the early 2000s I was in the parking lot of the sports arena in SD waiting for them to let us in.  I happened to be pretty close to where the tour buses were and witnessed Rob Halford rolling up in a beat looking silver Cutlass Cierra by himself, parking the car, reaching over to the passenger seat to grab his leather jacket, then walk into the sports arena.  The metal god drove himself to the show.

this was the record I heard as a child that made me a lifetime metal head. I finally got to see them on the farewell tour. They still rocked even if K.K. Downing was gone.

http://wildsreprisal.bandcamp.com/album/defiance-enthroned New Wild's Reprisal. Atmospheric black metal from the Northwest focused on ecology. really good stuff. I just bought the new album.

got word this morning my new album will be released via Depressive Illusions. Here is a sampler http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkYG28d7Gu0  (atmospheric black metal)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzRyOSz2fjE  late to the party but if you enjoy early Priest check out In Solitude. Saw them last year and they've got that old school vibe.

Think they've been rec'd here before, but The Shrine are fun live. Old school, punky hesher fuel (see also Valient Thorr).

Catamenia (Finnish blackened melodeath)
Carnal Forge (Swedish melothrash [if that's a thing])
Who else likes Mercyful Fate covers by Testament members' side projects?

Apparently, Downing didn't really enjoy playing anymore and was just going through the motions. His enthusiasm was gone so he left the band. They got a replacement but it's hard to replace 1/2 of a guitar duo that have been playing together for 40 years. When I saw them the new guy messed up a lot of the guitar parts and pretty much missed his half of the intro to Green Manalishi completely

Yeah...that's what they are saying, no doubt. I think there is more to it, though.
