Priest as a cross between flower children and Lynyrd Skynyrd's road crew.  This does not compute.

That's an amazing cover (first time I heard it I was finally persuaded to buy Judas Priest's album - which was one of their better late albums, but still Death's version of that song is better).

Just a couple this week -
Chapel of Disease - Descend to the Tomb (death; FDA Rekotz is becoming one of my favorite labels quite quickly)

Skeletal Remains - Extirpated Vitality (death; love the bass towards the end)

Azarath - Holy Possession (cats)

Beyond - Appearance from Beyond (death)

and finally making it to youtube -
Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult - Necrocosmic Vision (black)

Why does every SHMHC devolve into everybody posting a brazillion links to dumb songs from dumb bands they like instead of discussing the song at hand?

Put "Dreamer Deceiver" into context of the mid-70s.  Sad Wings of Destiny was Priest's first real "metal" album.  They still had their RockaRolla look but the songs were definitely more in line with what was to come next.   One of my favorites actually.

One of their best IMO.  The cover artwork was being considered for tattoo until the cost and size came into play.

this is a tapetrading thread except with youtube links. the original posted song is incidental.

Why does every SHMHC devolve into everybody posting a brazillion links to dumb songs from dumb bands they like instead of discussing the song at hand?

Cause everyone has heard Priest before and circlejerking over how awesome they are for the bazillionth time is boring as f*ck.

Cool shiat:

Tyrant Goatgaldrakona (Hungarian death metal)
Arkham Witch (Lovecraftian trad)
Stygian Shore (So old school it was produced by Mark Shelton)
Caladan Brood (Hope you like Summoning cause these guys f*cking love 'em)
Iron Claw (probably the best proto-metal song. Dat riff)
Marauder (Greek melodic metal)

Early Priest ranged from rather ridiculous ballads to ridiculously heavy (often on the same album)

Also, not to give the impression that I dislike Priest or anything: Sad Wings is my favorite Priest album (narrowly beating out Stained Class), and one of my favorite albums period. Every song on this album is essentially flawless (yes, even Epitaph), though the Unleashed in the East versions of Victim of Changes, The Ripper, Genocide, and Tyrant are the superior versions.

Forgot to mention that Arkham Witch, Stygian Shore, and Caladan Brood are on Bandcamp.

Very similar to their other track "Beyond the Realms of Death." But a little softer. I dig it.

I will fight anyone who doesn't think this fits in the realm of metal. Listen to the lyrics. And the high pitch yowls. Born from the blues, but hardened by experience. THAT is metal as fark.

http://youtu.be/BnHKZgRrUow Angantyr from Denmark has a new album 'Forvist' which is not as good as their classic 'Haevn' but still solid and remarkable. it gallops in a raw and mean viking norwegian way, but has the sick melodies of satanic swedish style black metal. unique but orthodox sound.

http://youtu.be/kiEC8PcebhE same guy from Angantyr has another band Make A Change...Kill Yourself which is similar in its melodies and atmosphere but is more on a droning DSBM tip. new album is called 'Fri.'

Also, HighZoolander, I went to high school with these guys, and seeing as how they're just starting to put out stuff, you would probably want to get in on these guys early, as would anyone who like bands like Antediluvian, Beherit, Blasphemy, etc.

I have nothing to add to the thread this week other than I saw "Green Jello" last night for the first time. They might not be close to metal (Or even competent with their instruments) but easily top 3 concerts ive ever been too. What a wild clusterfark of insanity.

Don't know if I listened to too much metal for way too long or what the hell happened but anymore it all sounds like so many albums I've heard for years. Anybody listen to the new God Seed? I was going to get it but after listening to a few songs on youtube I'm not too sure. It sounds like more Ov Hell which I could never really get into. Looks like compared to KIng, Infernus is obviously the better song writer.

My favorite Judas Priest album is Screaming for Vengeance, with Painkiller taking a close second.  British Steel comes in third.

However, one of my favorite Judas Priest songs isn't on any of those albums:

The Sentinel

This song gets my adrenaline every time I hear it.

In the mid-80's I got into Priest because I saw Sin after Sin for 2.98 in the bargain tape bin. Sinner did it for me. At that point, it was screaming for vengeance, hell bent, etc...

Delivering the Goods is an awesome song.

Breakin the Law is my pace song when I run.

I don't particularly care for Judas Priest, but I like a lot of stuff no one else likes, so it's one of those "who cares, here's a pair of ear buds, listen as loud as you want and I'll do the same for you" kinda things. I'm the same way with food. "What do you mean, you want lemon with that? Lemons aren't even a food item! Disgust! DISGUST!!! but if you want some, here's a box, go clean off my pretty tree that just happens to grow lemons."

I should mention I do acknowledge the contributions JP has made to metal in general. Each generation draws inspiration from the one before it with their art. I do it with my menus and recipes (Chef-type activity IS an art, too), painters study the master painters, musicians listen to a wide variety of music and draw from all of it. So while I don't listen to JP on purpose, I won't pick on people who do (unless I'm just teasing them).

Now that I have discussed the song at hand, well, the band anyway, to at least partially appease Herr Redcorn, I want to mention to the NorCal metal heads - especially those in the San Fran area who like Folk/Pagan metal - that Helsott, Ensiferum, Tyr, Heidevolk and Trollfest are going to be at the DNA Lounge in SF on April 3. Sadly, that is a Wednesday, so if you've never seen them live and you like those bands, then you may want to take a personal day if it's a work day for you.

I've seen Ensiferum, Tyr and Trollfest before (not all together and it's been a long while) and would like to see them all again, but can't go to this one due to my health. If things improve for me before then, I'm there. I'll be the chubby redhead with the Mjolnir and Aegishjalmur pendants, probably wearing a super-snazzy shirt from the Fark shop explaining to another aging metal head wench how to brine pork chops while drinking wine. I'm kind of hard to miss that way. ;-p Be sure and say "Hi" and let me know who you are if you spot me. I do answer to "Akvavit", for obvious reasons. tee-hee!

Trollfest - Essenfest

Although I will be mocked, I'll say it anyway: Painkiller was *too* hard. I didn't care for it. Nosir, not at all.
Screaming, Defenders? Awesome.
Painkiller? Not so much.

And Halford's "Winter Songs" proved to me that God does indeed exists, and contrary to what I once thought, He doesn't hate me.

That's where you're wrong. It's not a Priest thread, it's a SHMHC thread that happens to feature Priest. This has been going on (mostly) weekly for the past few years. This is what we do (the people that contribute regularly) do week in and week out.

I saw Firewind open up for Turisas last night, and they reminded me a lot of old Priest.  Not really my thing, but the old-school metalheads in the place ate it up.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4pRK7IMKR0

Turisas put on a show that jumped into my personal "top 3 of all time".  Those crazy vikings absolutely tore the roof off the place...so much fun.
