I like Kevin Smith, but I believe constant marijuana use has addled his sensibilities. He's now the equivalent of that kid who constantly tells you all the cool stuff he's going to do, but never actually does any of it. He used to be the guy who did the stuff.

KS: "I'm going to make a hockey movie called 'Hit Something.'"

Me: Sounds cool, Kev. When is that coming out?

KS. "Well, now it's going to be two movies because I wrote so much."

Me: Two hockey movies? Sure. Let's go. When do they get released?

KS: "Um... it's a TV miniseries now."

Me: Ohhhh...kay....   So what about your big final movie you're going to release?

KS: "I've decided I want to make 'Clerks III.' That will be my last one."

Me: Sure. Wonderful. If you get it out by the end of 2014, that'll be like 20 years of View Askew. So when are you...

KS: "Oh. It's a book now."

Me: I guess I'll read a "Clerks" book. I suppose. Maybe. When does that get released?

KS:  "Oh, I'm just gonna release it like one chapter at a time. Kind of like a blog. I mean, who has time to write a whole book all at once? Or film a movie, you know?"

Me: What do you mean, "who has time?" That's what you do for a living. What have you been doing instead?

KS: "Well, there's my Smodcast, and my blogs, and my weed, and my speaking engagements, and the fact that I do a Reddit AMA thread like once a week anymore, and my weed..."

I'm kida of a fan, but I think Hollywood machine proved too hard for him. Having to due Weinstien company for his share of the Clerks two profit, Cop Out showed he really couldn't do other people's material.

He also has to get the guy Who plays Randal on boar

Red State was relly decent but flawed.

His other stuff- podcast, little Internet shows and TV shows have been entertaining.

The weed has nothing to do with it. Kevin doesn't have enough clout to do what he wants in movies.

He's still producing stuff, just not movies. He's far more interested in live shows, podcast, books and webshows, cable shows.

did you listen to the adam carolla podcast from about a year ago, where they tried to hash out their dustup?  it was pretty interesting.

i think KS was largely right but carolla refuses to acknowledge it.  perhaps because he lost, from what he says, i think $250K for the show/series.  and carolla seemed to hinging his argument on, "i don't email, you should know that, everyone knows that, you should have known i don't communicate that way" when basically, THE WHOLE DAMN WORLD USES EMAIL. so i think KS was more right but not entirely blameless.

anywyas.

John Redcorn: Only old people use email and phone calls. Hip young people text and facebook.

it was something like that....when they had it out, ace had some of the emails but i think he didn't call KS back or some shiat, which led to Ace not doing the podcast which "supposedly" pissed off KS, who then "supposedly" got Ace removed from the TV project, despite having a binding contract.

i'm foggy on the specifics but i remember thinking KS had made a number of bona fide attemtps to contact adam but got nothing back, and ace's kinda weak defense was the aforementioned "everyone knows i don't email / voicemail / text, you should have known that!"  and ks is like "hey man, i left a shiatload of voicemails / emails and you never responded, what the fark?"

it is basically waht you'd expect to happen when two narcissistic blowhards used to having everything done precisely on their terms disagree on something.

anyways.

He is the only guy who can write a book about his "boring ass life" - while banging his hot wife, hosting parties at his house every weekend, continuously doing the comicon circuit talking about the one movie that was any good, while still pushing out content based on it and still making a profit.

FTFA: "Furthermore, releasing the book chapter by chapter, instead of as "one big, fat book," would allow audience input to influence where the story goes."

What a fantastic idea! If there's one thing I've learned over the years on the internet, it's that everyone will always come to a solid agreement about how good or bad a movie is and what direction a movie should or should've gone. They should do that for the next Star Wars. Nothing but rational agreement, all around.

I'm jealous of Smith. Wish someone would pay me a good amount of money just to shove a microphone in front of my mouth and let me just ramble on about whatever topic pops up.

Not to mention that it took him years to release the conclusion of his Black Cat/Spider-Man miniseries and he still hasn't finished the rest of Batman: The Widening Gyre.

To be fair, he has been busy with Comic Book Men on AMC, as well as his web-series "Spoilers" on Hulu. I heard that he's finally going to finish his Batman story (I hope).

No, there are a lot of people who've worked with him who he likes (Like Ben Affleck), and he's never had anything bad to say about Jennifer Lopez, which is unusual.  The people he complains about (Bruce Willis) are people who are renown for being "difficult" unless managed and dominated by a strong-willed director, which Kevin is not.

Yes and no.  Smith had done Clerks and Affleck had been in Slacker before they met.  It wasn't until after they worked together that they really became famous.

2013-02-17 03:26:12 PM
When did Smith become George Lucas?  Do we really need any more Clerks stuff, much less 'Year One Origin' shiat?  He's basically wanting to make the prequel at this point.  You would think someone with his geek mentality would know how that turns out: a lazy cash-in when you've run as far as a premise can go.

Go in a complete opposite direction. Sell it as a comedy but when you show up, Dante is unemployeed and Randall is the 10 dollar/hour prick manager of the video store who won't let the young kid do what he wants. No hijinks, just Randall complaining about how the inventory needs done because it is an important task.

I don't know, some of his movies are good and some are eh. It like he tries too hard and it's more shock like the donkey in Clerks 2 just because he can but what point did that really serve?

But at times he fits in with his fan base, says a lot and doesn't follow it up. Plus he loves to complain all the time. Do something about it.

And if there's another Clerks movie, can we get more of this:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtE6kxgV3XE

garman - in the news: ben kingsley is on iron man 3
smith - in the end he reveals he is gandhi and robert downey jr sucks his cock
g - jj abrams will direct the next star wars
s - he walked to george lucas and said he will do anal

and a couple weeks ago he tweeted a pic of his daughter after winning some battle of bands at school and the only thing he said was "she was in my balls, i farked her mother and 9 months later she got out"

While I enjoy his Hollywood Babble-On pod, mostly for Ralph Garman, the dude can drag out an advertisement to 7 freaking minutes. I'm pretty sure when these companies pay to be promoted on podcasts, they get like 30 seconds to 1 minute (see Adam Carolla; unless DAG is on then the ad takes 10 minutes).

It's not a big deal, but I'm pretty sure the weed doesn't lend itself to temporal awareness.

2013-02-17 07:40:31 PM
Smodcast is an example of someone figuring out a way of making a profit out of the new media landscape. In his more lucid moments, Smith has talked about the problems facing people who make films that are not blockbusters. People increasingly consume films in a way that doesn't return as much money to the producers - either because the DVD/Blu-Ray market for non-blockbusters is dying or flat out piracy. The guy has managed to eject before a lot of the industry that relied income streams that are dying out and only just made enough profit to be worth doing , crashes into a mountain.

As he's said - he's been gifted with an audience - and he's trying to find out a way of generating income that's going to work 10 years from now when the only people who will really profit from content generation are the internet advertising networks.

Knowing Kevin, he'll probably complain that everyone isn't going his way on the writing choices! As far as I have seen him, he doesn't take too well to people telling him his films are bad (plus his veiled threat towards internet reviewers that was shown at the end of Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back), which makes me wonder how badly he'll react to any criticism of the book series he plans on writing.
