cman: This is news?

I thought this was already known for years

i'm pretty sure i read a book about it maybe 25 years ago. so, it's news, but not the new kind of news.

2013-02-17 11:24:44 AM
This news is so old that it's the reason for the line quoted in the headline.

What's next?  Breaking story:  Jupiter is REALLY FREAKIN BIG?

2013-02-17 11:24:49 AM
So, Europa is our solar systems version of the big red button labeled "DO NOT PUSH"?

2013-02-17 11:25:31 AM
It's news because now we actually have to technology to find out if it's true.

Does Europa have oil?

I thought it was Enceladus orbiting around Saturn that was the likeliest place.

2013-02-17 11:36:45 AM
Something from that series turned out to be vaguely correct, like maybe the subsurface composition of Europa. After the discovery the NASA team called him to joke with him about it.

What a Hopkins coast Clipper minus the launch might look like

Earlier proposed mission: "An orbiter, lander, and thermal ice-melting probe, with detachable ROV minisub, to burrow thru the ice and check out the ocean under the ice. Because we're farking AMERICA, and that's how AMERICANS do Farking SPACE exploration."

Stripped-down mission: "Well, you can look at it from a distance every time you swing around the primary."

Now down to:

"Hey, ESA, can we hitch a ride for one of our instruments? Promise we won't take up too much room? Pretty-please?"

I'll chip in a few bucks, but I don't want a fly-by mission.  I want the plan for a Europa lander and drill.

Hell, I caught it again at age 39 and it holds up pretty well.  Nice group of actors, including Helen Mirren who I didn;t even remember was in it.

It was actually a very, very good movie.

The reason people hate it is because it's a completely different movie from the first one, but honestly, I end up watching 2010 more often than I watch 2001 simply because while it's more watchable.  That doesn't mean it's necessarily *BETTER*, just more watchable.

I've saod it before and I'll say it again.

If I ever get a spaceship, the very first place I will go is Europa.

Once there I will stomp around randomly, grabbing my crotch, and doing a punk version of "Climb Every Mountain."

So there.

yeah, headline sucks, the news is a new exploration project

At the request of NASA, a proposed mission to explore Europa was revised to significantly reduce the cost, the scientist told the media on the sidelines of an annual conference of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) underway here.

As a result of this review, the JPL and the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland developed a new exploration project named Clipper with a total coast of two billion dollars minus the launch.

But NASA already announced at the end of 2012 that there will be no funds for the Clipper mission in the current atmosphere of budgetary cuts, he said
.

The headline might have been

"US too cheap to search for life on Europa"

but who would have green-lit that? :-)

I caught it again last year at 31.  I think the actors did as best they could with the writing, which still was good to me.  It definitely holds up.  I wish they stuck to the book and landed though.  They did manage to create some good suspense with the movie version though.  I was scared.
