Exactly.  If Drew caved, Floridiots wouldn't have their own Fark tag.

They couldn't fix the stadium grounds during the year? They play like 4 games a season, spread out over 9 months, why not?

Why would this suddenly become an issue now? Jeez, we gave them their casinos and their 40 acres and a mule (oh wait that was for those other guys) what more do they want?

The Washington Pigskins is a pretty good name. They could keep the same unis and color scheme and change the mascot to some sort of mean looking hog. It'll probably happen eventually, go for it now.

I'm astounded that no sports team honors the contributions of our Semitic fellow-citizens. And it would be easy to fix the mascot, too: just lighten him up a but, move the braids a bit to the front, and replace the feathers with a yarmulke.

I just call them the Washington Running N*ggers.  That's not offensive, is it?  I mean, if Redskins is ok, surely something that's at least more accurate should be ok.  And I'm using that term ironically, like a retro throwback old-timey version, so I'm not racist.  Right?  RIGHT??

Nope. You, as a member of a class that has traditionally held power, don't get a say as to what other people may or may not find offensive. Not an opinion. Fact.

Most of the Native Americans in this area, (DC, Maryland, Northern VA, West Virginia, Delware) aren't actually offended by the name.  I believe that goes a long way to helping the Redskins not give a damn about what the rest of the country might think.

/cousin is married to a Shawnee and believe me, most of them don't give a damn.  They like the Redskins and like the Cleveland Indians.
//What they do hate is the alcoholism that happens on reservations and the lack of attention it gets.
///of course my own small sample size of knowledge doesn't account for the entirety of Native Americans.

What do Native Americans themselves think?
This is where it gets kind of odd. In actuallity, less than 18% of Native Americans are offended by Indian Mascots in pro sports. In a March 4, 2002 Sports Illustrated 7 page editorial entitled "The Indian Wars", a poll was conducted amongst Native Americans. Surprisingly, the following information was gathered
"Asked if high school and college teams should stop using Indian nicknames, 81% of Native American respondents said no. As for pro sports, 83% of Native American respondents said teams should not stop using Indian nicknames, mascots, characters and symbols."
This begs the question: If it doesn't bother Native Americans, why are so many non Indians taking up a fight against Indian mascots in pro sports? The answer is rather odd, but could be attributed to the misunderstanding of the real meaning of Redskin, or it could simply be moral guilt. This is our attempt to make amends for something we were never a part of and could not control. The compaign against the Native American by the United States was a dark part of our nation's history. Perhaps this is the reason for today's offense towards the use of Indian mascots.

damn, you're so right.  i should have read the article, then i would have known that you're so stupid that you think that a symposium at the smithsonian critical of that word included only white people.  further even if in this article it was referring only to the opinions of white people (assuming all columnist, commentators, and symposium attendees were white), it doesn't make my point that lots of non-white people find it offensive and would tell you as much if you used the word wrong.

/maybe your assumptions make you look incredibly stupid.

I think it's funny how guilty white people feel about this name.

Bottom line? There aren't enough Native Americans left to be offended to change it. If there were it would change, but it wont until enough white guys feel gulity about it.

So if it assuages your white guilt to try to make then change the name, go ahead. I'm sure what few Natives are left really appreciate you fighting the good fight on their behalf and this totally makes up for their genocide and mass displacement so we could build this great country full of people impotently expressing their outrage on the Internet about the name of a sports team.

Bleyo: What do Native Americans themselves think?

Yes, that's all that matters.

Then again, the question asked (should teams "stop using Indian nicknames, mascots, characters and symbols")is rather broad.  I'd want to know what Native Americans think about this particular name - they may be as cool with "Indians" as the Irish are with "Fighting Irish," but less ok about "Redskin" (setting aside the history - which may not matter if no one knows about it - and speaking of history, the Redskins franchise has a rather racist history, such as being the leader in the NFL's "gentleman's agreement" against blacks).

Another vote for racial slurs aren't the same as tribe names.  My college was once the Hurons, nothing wrong with it, PC police made em change.  Much different than redskins or injuns.  PC run amok is different than racial slur professional team in our nations capitol.

That article was written by this guy   driveyoursuccess.typepad.com
and he just so happens to be a Redskins fan.  Also, there is a big difference between using the name Warriors or Braves with a non-cartoonish mascot/logo and using the name Redskins.  The SI poll didn't specifically address Native American's support for the use of Redskins.
