Last year, the government funneled $2.2 billion to the phone cartels to cover the cost of Lifeline.

When the government buys gasoline to keep the military functioning, do they say the govt. "funneled eleventy-two quadrillion to the oil cartels???

and that cell phone service are cheaper to install and maintain short term and long term for a given area.

one transceiver tower capable of carrying up to X square miles and up to Y users.

or a copper wire to every dwelling and apartment unit in the area and enough switching gear to drive them all.

With all this talk of Republican obstructionism, one would think that it would behoove Environmentalists to go to them first instead of those hard-fighting heroic Democrats

If Rupert Murdoch's tweets provide any insight into what he actually thinks, there's a remarkable disconnect between his beliefs and his politics. He tweets about fighting climate change, controlling gun violence, and solving the immigration problem, yet continually trashes Obama and pushes hard right-wing candidates, to say nothing of what his media outlets do.

In other words, he seems to suffer from the same cognitive dissonance that many elderly white conservatives do.

No, what they really need to do is get the democrats to support environment killing initiatives. Then the republicans would be forced by their contrarian ways to support environmental protection.

I mean, you think that's sarcasm but that just might cause mass casualties in congress. Republicans just can't seem to help themselves. See the violence against women act as the most recent example. Propose a bill to end baby eating and they just might oppose it.

Chances are your 1994 washer was built by actual people who gave a fark as opposed to your new machine being slapped together by chimps in a sweatshop in China, using the crappiest materials imaginable. Wouldn't be surprised if you opened the door for the first time and a mummified human arm tumbles out.

Let us know if your new washer lasts as long as the '94 one did.

we probably won't be able to post comments here by then :)

my sears kenmore gas dryer has two parts replaced and one was the drive belt. total cost less than $20. i bought it in 1974.

bought the original washer then too. so that one lasted 20 years, the replacement 18 and this one -- we shall see. overall i'm  happy.

Its called lifeline in order to give it a puppies and rainbows name that nobody would possibly be opposed to.  9-1-1 is already free. If you are one of the people who pay for your cell phone, you'll see it itemized on your bill as some kind of "911 access fee" or something of that nature.

There's companies out there that offer no-contract, prepaid, no credit needed, cell service for $25/mo with phones that can be had from pawn shops and flea markets for $10.

If you cant afford this, you have larger problems.

...Um, no, dumbass, it's not for 911, it's so that these people can be called by potential employers. So they can  get out of poverty. Because yes,  they have larger problems, and those thirty-five dollars you suggest they spend may well be their entire food budget.

You don't actually know how extreme poverty works, do you?
