Oh, we can't have that. The haters would claim that NASCAR somehow influenced things for publicity, rather than recognizing that Danica is what she is- a competent, middle-of-the-pack driver.

Ladies and Gentlemen, that is a new track record. As it stands now, Danic Patrick is sitting on the pole, which is a statement of fact, and is in no way a comment on the driver's sexual orientation.

At least Dale Jr legitimately worked his way up the ladder as a driver. I'm not much of a racing guy, but didn't he win titles on the Nationwide level and win a bunch of races his first few years in NASCAR?

I believe Danica has one win total in some second tier race in Indy, and that's it. I understand NASCAR is primarily about sponsorship money which is why she should legitimately be there, but it's unfair to compare the two as racers.

It's Daytona qualifying, where the driver is nothing more than a passenger. I'm not a hater, but having to listen to this story for the next week is going to be annoying as hell as people try to make it into some kind of actual driving accomplishment or assign it some meaning that's more than it deserves.

2013-02-17 03:28:17 PM
Damn impressive for Danica. The fact that she ran early and nobody could beat her time really shows what a strong driver she is. If she can avoid getting caught up in other people's wrecks every damn week, She could potentially make the chase.

It does make some sense, especially if you are in the middle of a typical plate-race Big One and your car has become a 3400lb pinball. If it's a 1- or 2-car loss-of-control incident, when someone takes the air away and sends you spinning, you'd probably be better off holding on and trying to get the car reasonably straight again, all while praying that the traffic behind you gets out of your way.

I seem to remember Danica doing that in either a Nationwide or Sprint race and people were slamming her because she took her hands off the wheel.  There was alot of derp about her taking her hands off and covering her eyes.  Even after it was explained that was what you were supposed to do when you race Indy cars, there were still people who thought she covered her eyes and screamed like a girl.

the biggest redneck here: It's Daytona qualifying, where the driver is nothing more than a passenger.

This is true to an extent. The team setup and motor build is a more important contribution and Danica will be the first to say so. But if you watched the ghost shots (which were cool, BTW) of her against Gordon and Stewart, she braved that yellow line better than they did. Winds could have been a factor, but that's for everyone. Like Stewart said afterward, yes, she has a great setup, but she had to do her part too.

Heh. I have plenty of ear protection. I took a friend to his first MotoGP race and we were crossing the start finish bridge when they went under us on lap one. His expression was priceless.

Gotta check out Sonomas schedule for drags. Not sure if there are any other drag tracks around.

MFAWG: coolio mack: ChrisDe: Gonz: Oh, we can't have that. The haters would claim that NASCAR somehow influenced things for publicity, rather than recognizing that Danica is what she is- a competent, middle-of-the-pack driver.

That post also works if you replace "Danica" with "Dale Jr.".

At least Dale Jr legitimately worked his way up the ladder as a driver. I'm not much of a racing guy, but didn't he win titles on the Nationwide level and win a bunch of races his first few years in NASCAR?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA gaaaaspHAHAHAHAHAHhaahahhaha

Uh, Junior actually did win two Nationwide (then Busch) titles before moving up to Cup.

Friend of mine was first 2 reach Melanie Troxel when her In-And-Out dragster unexpoectedly fired up on her @ the Winternationals, said she was freaked out, lucky to be alive & knew it-as for 'sploding jet engines...ask Tim Ditt & "Big Daddy" Don Garlits about that;

Puta! What in the good name of shiat happened there?

I'm just happy racing is back. I want to get to a drag race this year. Never been. Quite curious.

Bring hearing protection.  Trust me on this.  You have never heard cars that loud, most likely anything at all that loud unless you spent time around jet engines.
Or explosions.

^ This.. Drag races are insane.. You know that wall of face pounding engine noise at Nascar races as the pack comes around turn four and heads for you? Multiple that by 1000 and instead of it being a sound that you can gradually get accustomed to, it just hammers your chest instantly.

Try one win since leaving go karts in all of racing.

Thanks Bobby Rahal for giving us this.

Just face it people, she got "the call". Congrats to her.  I knew when Smoke was bump drafting her last year at the Daytona Nationwide race she had been accepted into the "good ol' boys club". Lucky her.

It is hilarious seeing some of the greatest talent drivers like Kurt Busch and Montoya back in the mid 20s and her up front. Wow 196mph. It's a new world record since 1989. What a joke. Take the goddamn plates off, drop the engine displacement to 3.5 liters and take out the first 20 rows of stands in the tri oval. If Awesome Bill can lap at 210 mph with bias ply tires and an open faced helmet without carbon- fiber-half-a-goddamn-Indycar-wraparound-like-your-mom' s-placenta-seat/Hans Device and soft walls then so can you overpaid nancies. Can we get back to having to drive the cars instead of riding around wide open throttle in a 497.5 mile single file parade?

/F/ucking restrictor plate racing is so stupid. It has been 24 years since they were put on and every time they go out and wreck a million dollars in cars looking like monkeys screwing a football. I want to see a race not a parade. I want to see them have to lift into the corners and may the best man/woman win.

//F/uck your insurance companies 200mph speed limit. NASCAR has more money than god and can insure themselves.

But if they take the restrictor plates off, cars may fly into the catch fence like Allison did in '87! NASCAR couldn't survive a repeat of that!

You'll think about the hearing protection while in the parking lot.  Even there the sound is loud enough to make a preacher go "FUUUU.....".
Once you're inside it's too late.  It's so loud it removes conscious thought.

Parking lot, hell. I used to live in Novato, which is about fifteen minutes from Sears Point via CA-37. When they hosted NHRA, I could hear them racing, and that big hill is between the drag strip and the wetlands that 37 runs through to Novato.

Let's put it this way. Bobby Allison went into the catch fence at 200 mph, and that's what caused the plates to be installed. They're now skirting 200 WITH the plates.

Data cited by the drivers shows that the roof flaps cease to keep you on the ground above 204.

You take those plates off, you are very quickly going to get the NASCAR Interactive Fan Experience.

Thanks did you even read my post? I said tear out the lower 20 rows of seats in the triovals at Daytona and Talladega to keep the fans safe. Those farking seats are useless anyway all you can see is the cars coming into the trioval and down to 1 but not into the turn in many of them. Build the stands higher to replace them.

They should develop a solution like clear plexiglass over a double fence to hold cars back and to keep them from being chewed up by the fence. The car that flew into the stands in 1987 had no roof flaps. We are now in the fourth generation of the roof flap in 2013 which is about twice as wide and tall as the originals from 1991 or even last year. The 2013 gen 6 also has huge cowl flaps that pop up to let air escape and keep the cars on the ground. This Bobby Allison accident comparison doesn't ah, fly anymore.

Besides, as the media likes to tell us these are the "best drivers in the world." They are hitting 213 into turn 1 at Michigan with half the banking of Daytona. The drivers would love having throttle response and the ability to control your own destiny back. They need come up with a new solution now before we lose more legends like Dale Earnhardt. Goddamn it has been 25 years! Big Bill France built Daytona and Talladega to outclass and to be faster than Indianapolis. Fans want to see the plates off. If you are afraid I can find 43 drivers to run.

/Indycars suck to watch.
