First of all,  it's an opossum. You see thousands of them dead on the road here in Michigan. They die more than raccoons or squirrels. They most certainly aren't suffering from a low population, either. While I get that the creature might be a little freaked out, there are worse fates for an opossum these days. I bet that one's pampered.

Second, I'm not a cannibal, but PeTA should know that this poster actually makes me hungry for a nice rump roast or round.

LMGTFY... It's apparently the bone in the center of the breast. My guess is that it's some prude's attempt to avoid saying "breast" by separating it into two ribs and a keel. Or some penny-pincher's attempt to make more money by selling more pieces.

This is just our "job creating" legislature passing bills that are critical to the state. As soon as they are done allowing possums to be lowered in a cage, and firing all the regulatory boards and replacing them with yes-men, and reducing unemployment checks and cutting time you can spend getting unemployment checks, and giving money to the Panthers so their poor and penniless owner can have his stadium renovated, and telling the Federal government no, NC does not want to be part of the insurance exchange program, and approving a voter ID bill, and allowing fracking and offshore drilling to take place, why, they are going to get right on creating those jobs the state so desperately needs!

Pretty much this. It sounds like a really bizarre tradition, but just the same, that caged opossum in NC certainly must fare better than, say, opossums on my parents' farm.
