I can't speak for anyone else, but I usually walk around with my phone buried in an inside pocket of my suit jacket (which during the winter is underneath a buttoned-up topcoat) and only have a pair of headphones with a microphone sticking out so I can listen to my music and take calls.  So while yes, there is a clock on my phone, if I'm out and about it's faster and easier to turn my wrist than to dig out my phone, check the time, and put it away again.

Plus, I find it to be much more difficult to be suave and/or discreet when checking the time on a phone.  If I'm meeting with a client, the last thing I want to do is to look impatient.

The Pebble watch seems far more practical, namely for their use of e-ink. I would guess both the Samsung and Apple watches will have full color screens and need to be charged often enough to make it a hassle. An e-ink display would be far less of a chore. Part of the reason I wear a watch is because it's always there and I only have to change the battery annually. Taking my watch off every night to charge is just not worth it.

I know what planned obsolescence is.  But recently the thinking seems that if Samsung and Apple or Google or whoever isn't coming up with something no one has even thought of doing before (not just improving last years model) they have ceased to be relevant.

Well, no, perhaps that wasn't clear.  I'll wear my stainless-steel Citizen, or if it's a really big deal I'll borrow one of the partners' fancy Swiss pieces.  The watches in TFA would probably look quite silly outside of certain narrow contexts.

Well I'm a programmer.  I rarely meet with clients.  If I do, I probably have my cellphone on the desk.  Plus a laptop open.  And there is probably a clock on the wall as well.  On top of which, I don't really need to know the exact time that often.

If I'm anywhere else, I have the phone in a holster and it's really easy to get the phone out.  Not as easy as glancing at a wrist, but still pretty easy.

I just hate wearing jewelry of any kind.  I wore a wedding ring for about the first year after I got married, and then couldn't stand it any more.  Watches drive me up a tree.  I can't understand why they don't have the effect on everybody.

There is not 'discreet' way to check time with clients.  If you're checking time, people are noticing. rolling your wrist to check and flashing your antiquated bling is no more or less than whipping out the phone.  You could easily say 'I'm sorry, my wife is sick, I had to check her text' or some other bullshiat.

That's fine.  It's still outdated technology.  Hell, there are even circles where you 'have' to have a watch to do business, it's a boys-club thing, like needing the 3-piece armani and the overpriced car and trophy wife.  It's just part of doing business.  But it still doesn't mean there's a logical reason for it, any more than there is for ties.

You're an idiot. There are plenty of occasions where a watch works better than a phone. When your phone dies. While doing water sports. I personally use mine at work as a cop and overseas with the Army where I don't have my phone at all. Simply checking the time quickly without an expensive device that loses power in a day and dies if it touches water is still a useful thing.

Not in free countries and states. Carrying a pocketknife is a natural and responsible as a tire jack in the car and smoke detectors in the house. It's a tool. I've used my pocketknife hundreds of times. Never stabbed anyone though. It's no more of a weapon than a baseball bat is a club. Both resemble things that used to be common weapons hundreds of years ago but now are common tools for everyday uses/sport. Sure they can be used as weapons. So can anything. I can hit you over the head with my printer. That doesn't make it weapon.

Try thinking instead of feeling next time. You might be surprised how the world looks through a sensible mind and not a scared heart.

I'm not paying a could hundred dollars to have a watch that is basically nothing more than a Bluetooth answer /decline button for my multihundred dollar smart phone.  Maybe some people get so many farking phone calls they can't be bothered o actually touch the phone to answer and need this waste of technology and money, but I thought it was a retarded idea when Fossil introduced it nearly a decade ago.

Call me when someone makes a wrist smart phone that is in fact a farkING PHONE. ( not like the 2foot thick wrist phones the Chinese make with batteries that have to be changed every 2 hours either)

I have a sony smartwatch. It's not perfect, but having the ability to see if as call is important or not (useful if you have a toddler in daycare who may or may not get sick at any given time and need to be picked up in <1 hour) and to silence a call while my cellphone is in my pocket makes it worth it. Then again it is really only useful if you have a job where checking your cellphone would be considered inappropriate.  It also receives texts and emails, which is somewhat cool as well. The sony smartwatch is a bit clunky so if someone comes out with an improved smart watch I will probably pick it up.

Based on my Sony watch a color OLED screen has the potential to last 3-5 days, but won't be very readable in sunlight. Of course apple/samsung could go with mirasol or some other exotic display tech and still have the "epaper" (the pebble isn't really epaper btw, it still always uses energy to display the screen, it is just a high contrast B&W LCD that is readable in sunlight) properties.
