Baby doll thread in 3,2,1...

2013-02-17 01:16:17 AM
Once riding in old Baltimore,
    Heart-filled, head-filled with glee,
I saw a Baltimorean
    Keep looking straight at me.

Now I was eight and very small,
And he was no whit bigger,
And so I smiled, but he poked out
His tongue, and called me, "Baby Doll."

I saw the whole of Baltimore
    From May until December;
Of all the things that happened there
    That's all that I remember.

Okay, I'll bite.  The white people in blackface are doing it to denigrate black people.  This use of whiteface is being used to reference porcelain dolls, not white people. In the same way, a white soldier blackening his face is not being racist, because he isn't trying to mick black people, but not have his face give him away*.  There is such a thing as "context", and "being a racist-ass cracker" is always bad context.

*Though the intermixing of these two ideas of blackface in O Brother, Where Art Thou did lead to some amusing bits

I guess I always enjoyed looking at and wearing Victorian clothing instead of the Lolita style (which the Japanese strangely attach the Goth logo too, but have seemingly little to none of the dark music, literature, or media that influenced the English/American Goth scenes which spread in similar manners to other places in Europe (including Russia) and the Middle East (there are lots of Goths in Israel!)).  But continue to post away Lolita pics for the Pedobear Fark crowd in here! :)

Cause I'm telling you now, that I don't think you are nice.
You already showed you were a racist because you were crying about not being allowed to be racist.

Since you're not too far from you may be interested. In good weather months there is a Saturday flea market in Woodstock NY, away from the touristy shops down towards where the locals go to supermarket (still a main road). In the past when I visited over the years there was always a fellow with a small camper who had the most incredible selection of used black clothing you could imagine. it was mostly cast-aways from NYC stage costumes, from theater shows. Things always varied and sometimes it was like visiting the closets of The Addams Family. I don't know if he still sells but it's worth checking if you are ever in the area.
also bring copies of live concerts; there was a fellow who had the most farking incredible selection of recorded live shows i've ever seen, and if you had something he didn't already own he would trade you no charge 1 for 1.
there also was a small toy store up in town. i'm into toys. excellent store, incredibly varied wonderful imported selection.

Luckily for me they only played one song from their new album in the 2005 reunion (which "Go Away White" sounds like Peter Murphy's solo act mixed with Love and Rockets, doesn't sound like their former selves at all, no wonder they broke up again after that! Couldn't agree on how to sound.) I would have loved to gone to that concert back then, but I only started out in the scene in late 1999 early 2000, but it didn't take me long before I got my first Bauhaus CD (glad I did research and didn't follow the Marilyn Manson/Mall Goth phase that my former friend did; now she's a hipster on a roller derby team!)

Well, Voltaire "counts" but it seems like he's going for every scene that will pay him money to play (and not complain when he gets "too drunk to sing" on stage!), not just the Goth scene these days (I miss his days of Oh My Goth! and Deady comics and singing about killing The Man Upstairs).

I don't know if he still sells but it's worth checking if you are ever in the area.
also bring copies of live concerts; there was a fellow who had the most farking incredible selection of recorded live shows i've ever seen, and if you had something he didn't already own he would trade you no charge 1 for 1.
there also was a small toy store up in town. i'm into toys. excellent store, incredibly varied wonderful import ...

Thanks for the tips, I'll have to try it. So far since there has been a lack of Goth stores around or excessively expensive ones (like Trash and Vaudeville in NYC - though that's because they took advantage that their across the street competition Religious Sex went out of business years ago [missed out on buying a really awesome purple & black revolutionary war velvet long coat there at RS]), I've been taking long range adventures with my car to places out in PA or historic NJ towns but finding nothing. (or worse, finding Hipstervilles!) I just one day hope to find that same amazing coat or one just like it.

DarkSoulNoHope: Smgth: DarkSoulNoHope: alienated: DarkSoulNoHope: The Lords of the New Church?

I might have. I dont remember. I have had friends tell me things we did and I just draw a blank.
I dont do hard drugs anymore, or try to drink my weight in drinks when i go out

I never drank so I get to remember all of my experiences, including seeing Sisters of Mercy (ugh, Andrew changed) and Bauhaus (Awesome, though no Bella Lugosi's Dead! :( ) at the Nokia Theater in times square back in 2005. Still my favorite band seems to be The Lords of the New Church, especially because of Russian Roulette.

Sorry. Nice pics, and good read, subby. Some Krews really make me want to deal with the hordes and actually go to Mardis Gras. This is one of them .

This is one of the reasons I don't visit New Orleans (other than the lack of funds).

Sisters of Mercy were my favorite band for over a decade! I only saw them once and it was well after their prime, but it was still great. Eldritch was...not quite the angry anti-goth he can be. Never got to see Bauhaus, but I dug 'em. As far as goth went, that's all I cared for. Not that I own any clothes that AREN'T black anyway...

/Unless Voltaire counts, which he kinda does in campy folky way.

He runs around the various Steampunk and Comic Conventions that come along, hasn't done a Goth event in a while, though not that there are many left anyway (at least in the Tri-State area there aren't any active Goth meetups or conventions beyond clubs and none have hired Voltaire in a while I believe. I can't fault Voltaire, if I were him I'd go anywhere that paid. He's in a pretty niche market as is. Plus the guy is crazy talented. And funny. So he gets mad props from me; I can't say a bad word about him.

Andrew...is a complicated person. I guess he didn't like being buttonholed? It was some kind of backlash. Which is silly to turn on the people who MADE you, but Metallica certainly did, and made out like bandits to boot. I guess he can't accept his status as god father of goth. I mean, an argument COULD be made where a good deal of their music bears little in common with 'goth' music (not a lot if sax for example). But needless to say, more then enough of their stuff IS goth, they dressed and acted goth, as did all their fans.

/I wasn't going to admit it but my screen name I adapted from the one I came up with in college, originally it was 'SoMgoth'...

BAH! All you Farkers talking about the glory days of goth make me hate being so young. Apparently, the goth scene here was pretty good for a while (The Castle in Ybor/Tampa was supposed to be pretty good), but I'd say it died just before I was old enough to really appreciate it.

That being said, it seems like the industrial scene is starting to pick up the slack.

Well I would always say it's more Peter Murphy who's the godfather of Goth, though I usually believe in one godfather of Goth rather than multiple spread out ones; Siouxsie Sioux for the godmother of Goth in my opinion (and not Stevie Nicks, like that movie Gypsy 83 would like us to believe, even though they got most everything else right! [plus it should only take a max of 10 - 12 hours to go from Sandusky, Ohio to NYC including gasoline/bathroom stops, not three days!]); but like Clan of Xymox who temporarily became Xymox, Andrew learns that you can't quickly go to "mainstream" and sell records! I never knew what the self backlash was for calling yourself a "Goth artist" or being labeled that way by other people, they still made alot of money from it! (they probably didn't think that some of those houses and unlimited cars "owned" by rappers shown on MTV were actually rentals, just making the "crib" look good, and those Goth artists said "Not enough money for me!")

Nice college name btw, for mine I just used my early yahoo email and it seems to stick out even more these days, considering how jobs are and money getting harder to come by. :)

Andrew's anti-Goth outbursts was his Amphetamine Logic! ;-)

I am only 31 and started out in the scene in late 99 to early 2000, but if I was a little older I probably would have really enjoyed it around the mid to late 90s. You already had most of the Goth music still in print on CDs (as a DJ, I still haven't embraced the labtop DJ movement!); the Cybergoth scene hadn't taken over the clubs yet (were just beginning to when I started clubbing at Albion/Batcave in NYC); Faith and the Muse, Switchblade Symphony, London After Midnight (Sean wasn't yet in HIS anti-Goth phase yet and I saw/met him at Limelight in 2000!), and other bands I adore were putting out new albums and still playing in concert at Goth events and didn't take a backseat to EBM or electronica; and I probably was more likely to secure a DJ spot with my embrace of the older tunes. (instead of having to cringe each false advertising of a flier that says "Goth, Industrial, EBM, 80s, Electronica" while the promoter who made it knows full well there will be very little (if at all) Goth or 80s music and very much Electronica and EBM and a few Industrial songs!) CSB .  I can't say that I've thought much about the genre for about 15 or so years, but I did certainly enjoy it up until the early to mid 90's, and still like breaking out the old Siouxsie/Joy Division/Sisters, etc. records (yes, records) on occasion.

For me I keep telling myself "Oh, I'll grow out of it" or think, "One day I might become "more Jewish" and join the Orthodox Jews in Lakewood and never think about the deterioration of the scene again", but it never happens, I keep going back to what I enjoy in terms of clothing and music and thoughts. I had a girlfriend at one point up until two years ago who started getting tired of me being that way, got a new Hipster boyfriend, then she later became tired of the Goth scene itself and became a Hipster (Am I bitter much?! :-D ) When I can't hear it inside a club, I play it at home or in my car or put headphones on and I wear it everywhere. I got some vinyl records to, especially of Lords of the New Church, gotta find a better record player for it though! Either I'll turn into one of those "still Goth after 50" types or eventually I'll "grow out of it" but I am enjoying the ride right now (I just wish I could find a club that would have the guts to play some slow tunes more than just once in a while, like from Dead Can Dance or The Cranes that I could flow to :-P ), no matter what happens in the future.

jso2897: Yes, you've cut right to the heart of the matter. It's all about the systematic oppression of white people in this country, and the egregious double standards our poor, unfortunate, pale asses are subjected to.
Oh, ok, so what you are saying is that it is all cool to play on a double standard as long as when someone challanges you on it you can throw down the race card and say "because, that's why". Did you even read the article? The whole thing was based off of racial divides that were laced with double standards. Everyday people face challanges of all kinds because of double standards. Most people work to overcome them and change the way people use them. They are especially challenging and frustrating when they are based on race. But from what you said, as long as you have the race card to use, then, hey, because that's why makes it ok.

Sadly DCD has become an easy listening/new age parody of themselves.   I made the mistake of wandering over to the park to see them last summer, thankfully I didn't pay for a ticket, because the show was just straight up bad on all levels, which is sad because I still like some of their older music quite a bit, but damn is that new albums of theirs a huge stinker.   Bands that get older don't have to do that.   I saw The Descendants and Iggy Pop last summer too, and they were both amazing.

Yeah, it never made me happy after I bought that new album, sounded like bland crap with no meaning. Unlike Dead Can Dance playing A Passage In Time which has much more meaning today than it did back then (and you can dance to it!)

It seems to have happened to many of the good Goth/Darkwave bands of old, that alot of older Goth bands (thankfully not all) have turned into a parody of themselves. Clan of Xymox turned into mainly electronica and even changes the lyrics of their old songs (especially "Louise", which instead of that beautiful, droning, "calling out to the thing that caused me pain" Looouuiiiissseee, at the end; it turned into a unintelligible lyric rant during live shows, which I can't figure out what he's saying cuz those lyrics aren't in the original!), London After Midnight changing from a Goth band (with probably the most beautiful and probably stereotypical Goth song, "Sacrifice") to Sean Brennan's version of Rage Against The Machine mixed with elements of VNV Nation (plus he now claims that the band members who were with him for years on end had no contributions to the music and were just a "live band") with his most recent album, Gene Loves Jezebel splitting itself among the twin brothers and now has legal American names and British names http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_Loves_Jezebel (link to the story) of the band for each separate brother, Tina Root (which I have a theory, based on YouTube videos of interviews that she wasn't really Goth at all, just a nice looking/sounding singer who was more of a Valley Girl and somehow fell into the scene) of the Goth/Trip Hop duo Switchblade Symphony creating a band called "Tre Lux" playing really bad covers of other bands songs (like Depeche Mode) and even bad renditions of a few of her Switchblade Symphony songs (according to prior interviews, she was apparently upset that people of the Goth scene were the only ones buying her music and she wanted to "expand her horizons" [which I guess means, drop your partner and do bad cover songs instead of anything really new and interesting!]), and I am sure numerous examples of other Goth bands turning into crap! (like The Cure, but they're forgiven because Smith got better and then put out Disintergration! :-D )

Ohhhhhh.  I see.  "Pasty" is British English for "empanada."  Those are very, very popular in Chile, and other parts of South America.

Probably in Portugal and Spain too, where empenadas originated.

Pasties are popular in the US too. If you're a yooper.

/And those crazy Americans call scones "biscuits". The fools.

I know you're trolling, because you've pulled that crap before.  If I hadn't previously marked you down for biscuit trolling in other threads, I'd have to give you at least a 7/10.

For the rest of you, scones and biscuits are completely different things that happen to bear a passing resemblance.  You should really try both.
