Holy crap. There was a car in that blur?

Damn.

Normally, I hate common criminal mug shots, but his is ... interesting.

2013-02-16 05:50:59 PM
It seems like the car was traveling faster than the camera could capture. Was there even one frame with the car in it?  All I saw was a streak of light.  Scary.

That farker was trying to kill them both.  Hope the kid makes it.

New media hype.  There is no way that car was going anywhere near 130 MPH.  Yes maybe at some points it hit that speed but it wasn't going that fast when it crashed.

Yes, we need to hear Jamie Hyneman say, "let's look at that on the high speed"

Ugh, this. What's worse is they went with a Yuneek spelling, condemning their son to a lifetime of correcting his name. At least he could go by John, but on anything official requiring a full name... yeesh.

A friend's parents did something similar to her, so as soon as she turned 18, she legally changed her name to something boring but normal.

There were 6 and 8 cylinder engine options, up to 270 hp. So yeah, its possible. Whether it was going that fast on impact....

Why does anybody need a vehicle that can go 130 MPH?  That is stupid.  We need to limit cars to 75MPH, and the 0-60 time shouldn't be less than 15 seconds.  It would save lives and fuel.  Think of all innocent children that have been and will be killed.

Under ideal conditions, it may be possible.
On the road, during a car chase, with an obvious obstacle directly in your path? Naaaa

Fast, but not that fast at point of impact.

Well, it might not be that bad... if his name was pronounced like "John Nathan." People hearing it might mistake it for two names instead of a single name.

Its way too soon after this incident to talk about governing auto engines.

Maybe in a few days after the media allows this incident to die down we can push for new car laws.

The child was found crying on the floor, behind the driver's seat under a pile of clothes, said Indianola detective Sgt. Brian Sher. It's unclear whether he was strapped in, or what allowed his survival.

Children are mostly cartilage.  which is harder to break.

On a public road, with an obstacle (cop car) directly in your path....the human brain would probably kick in and slow yourself down a little.

Probably.

Why not?  My 1987 Chevy Cavalier topped out at a shade over 120 and that had a rev limited 2.0 four banger in it. they seem to be about the same size and the Passat looks to have more power.

Actually, all transmissions should be fully automatic.  Manual transmissions encourage people to hot-dog it and drive dangerously.  We should also ban any new Fast and the Furious movies.

Agreed.  A fully automatic transmission is an enabler.  It leads to the senseless deaths of children.  It should be banned.

I'm not one to hate on the police, but that could have easily been a car with other kids inside that probably wouldn't have fared as well as that 5 year old did. There has to be some point where the cops need to stop and realize that whatever the person they're chasing did, catching them is not worth risking innocent lives by continuing to pursue a vehicle at those speeds.

Once a chase reaches 100 mph they just need to let it go. Criminals are stupid, sooner or later they're going to get caught one way or another.

The conversation at the hospital probably went something like this:

Nurse:  Do you have a name?
Mom:  you know, I always thought "meth" would be a good name for a boy.  How about Meth?
Nurse:  Um, ... maybe something more traditional?
Dad:   Yeah, like Metthew.  Or who was that asshole with like 100 hats?  Metholomew!
Nurse:  I'm concerned about the "meth" part.  It might get the kid in trouble later on.
Mom:  Oh yeah!  Like they might make it illegal.  What if we call him Math Salts?
Nurse.   ...
Dad:   Math Salts ain't even a damn name.
Mom:  Okay, how about Jennifermeth?  No, no, I mean like Jemmethifer or something.  I mean, if it was a girl.  Nevermind.
Dad:   Johmethan.
Mom:  Armethur.
Nurse:  Mike!
Dad:  Johnamethan.
Mom:   Bennifer?
Nurse:  Steve...
Dad:  Johnathemeth
Mom:  Johnathem!  With like an 'e'.
Nurse:  Hey, that's good, that's not bad.
Dad:  And then like the meth is backwards, like a hidden message.  Like the Beatles.
Nurse:  I'm thinking we should make it even more hidden.
Dad:  Okay, Johnathenn, so the 'm' is like disguised as two n's.
Nurse:  Oh hooray.
Mom:  I like it too.  HAY LEVITRA CHLAMYDIA, COME LOOKIT YER NEW BABY BROTHER!
