(NYPost)   Is it not enough that this man owns a mansion and the world's biggest yacht that he can't get some privacy on Manhattan's West Side?   (nypost.com) divider line 30

Hint: If you're "publicity-shy", don't go around on a private $1.5 billion 533-foot yacht.

If you want privacy, take your gluttonous display of overwhelming wealth out to sea. If that's still not enough, scuttle it while still on board. You'll DEFINITELY get some privacy then.

NutWrench: megarian: robodog: There's no way in hell it has a missile defense system. Does anyone honestly think the US Navy would allow a ship outfitted with such a system (which could easily be reprogrammed for offensive capabilities) into US territorial waters, let alone into Manhattan?

That's exactly why I clicked "comments". Can anyone explain? I haven't had my GED from WikiLawSchool renewed.

As someone else mentioned earlier, it's probably just a passive defense system, like flares and chaff. This seems kind of silly to me, because anyone who can afford to fire missiles at you can afford much more direct and lethal ways to express their displeasure. (aircraft, shipboard heavy guns, etc)

That's kind if what I was thinking. Why have all the defence crap when you have better offense crap? And thanks!

Maybe try owning some smaller boats if you need your privacy.  What's that?  People won't know how rich you are if you get a smaller boat?

Depends. How many US politicans has he bribed so far?

Just the important ones. Bear in mind this guy made his money, at least the foundation of his fortune, by flat out stealing it, and a LOT of people, including several journalists, died in the process. The only reason Interpol hasn't arrested the guy is he keeps all the right palms nicely greased.

Badgers: Fark Rye For Many Whores: How do you spend that much money? Not the morals of it, just, 1.5b what?

Union laborers?

Have a room paneled in rare woods, some of which can run you into tens of thousands for a few square feet of veneer. Combine that with some very nice craftsmanship to make delicate and intricate carvings and inlays of similar rare materials, maybe commission a few works by artists. Some nice booze, a crew, this and that.

That, of course, in addition to the custom design and construction of a technically advanced yacht that includes a farking submarine. One off design of something like that is expensive, especially when you want things like a submarine to serve as a luxury escape pod in the event some dissidents get a hold of a few small missiles. When you're talking the Navy, you can spread the cost of designing a new destroyer across 50 or so new ships. With something like this, you probably also have the plans destroyed, so nobody could build another one even if they wanted to.

pedrop357: JohnnyRebel88: 7th Son of a 7th Son: How the hell can they get something that big to dock so perfectly straight without hitting anything? I've never driven a boat let alone been on one 1/100th that size.

That is a great question, especially with the water working against you.  It's not like backing up an SUV into a small garage (carhole).

Probably a sophisticated system controlling a network of bow and stern thrusters.

I am not knowledgeable when it comes to boats, but I guess when you have laser beams aboard, the thing probably parks itself.  I was just thinking about how much of a pain in the ass it was for me to park a jet ski onetime.  I would like to take a look inside the boat though, but this was probably his intent of parking it there.  Everyone should just ignore it and wish the paper did the same.  He would be a sad Russian.  I bet then he would open it up for people to see.  You can see, but you can't touch...  He is trying to create the largest chic magnet in the water.  He probably succeeded.

How much horsepower does something like this have?  Excuse my ignorance if that is not what it is called in the nautical world.  How many engines would something like this need?

Contents Under Pressure: A guy I know who owns a 26 foot Santana once told me that, while a house involves digging a hole in the ground and throwing money in it, owning a boat involves throwing money in the water.

I hope, at least, this guy is providing employment for people who like to live and work on boats.

"using government influence" is quite an exercise in newspeak when it involves bribery, cronyism and murder.

ruudbob: Hand gun permits are almost imposable to get in NY but missile defense system permits are a dime a dozen.

Celebrities usually have no problem with handgun permits in NYC, so why would missile defense permits (if they actually existed) be any different?

It doesn't have to be a minigun based system ala the us navy. It coyld be a simple jamming system (flares radar etc) or laser system to destroy the guidance systems of missiles.
