Well, Doctor Whooves wasn't really a reference, he just became one.

And Derpy wasn't planned... she just became Derpy.

The ones in the list are planned references.

First, the season finale. Now this?

Imagine the entire contents of the Canterlot library, the sum total of equestrian knowledge, blasted into the hive mind's fragile neural network with the full force of every cultural reference on the planet. That is our last-ditch attempt to win humanity a reprieve from extinction at the hands of an awakened equine goddess.

I've never watched an episode of that. My wife and I actually had a conversation about it. Ultimately we agreed that one day we'd watch an episode just to see what all the hype was, but we'd do it "some other time," like when we  eventually watch "Game of Thrones" or all the other TV shows people rave about.

But apparently there's some new stuff in the new season, and it's upsetting some of my Facebook friends. They're saying that the show has been ruined in the name of toy sales - as if the show ever existed for any other reason than to sell toys. I haven't removed anyone from my friends list yet, but I have removed some of them from my newsfeed.

Ah, but with YouTube or whatever replaces it, they'll also be able to go back to the original references with the click of a mouse, flick of an eyeball, or inkling of a neuron. And then we'll have a generation of kids who learned to appreciate Warner Brothers. And the Warner Sister.

Yeah, but the spare Doctors came in at the end of the season, long after fanboys had christened Doctor Whooves.

I can believe that the original Doctor was a happy accident, and it was expanded on after fandom labeled him as Doctor Whooves.

GreenAdder: But apparently there's some new stuff in the new season, and it's upsetting some of my Facebook friends. They're saying that the show has been ruined in the name of toy sales - as if the show ever existed for any other reason than to sell toys.

Today they altered a character's physical form in an episode that would have done well as a series finale, but seems a bit odd as a mere season finale. So they either signed up for another season after the episode was in the can (and they expected it to be the finale), or Hasbro really did cram the plot point in there just to be able to produce a new model to the toy line. More than anything, the decision is confusing, storyline-wise. Of course they are doing at least one more season, and one of the voice actresses has pointed out that the first couple episodes of season 4 will follow up on today's episode, so I think lingering doubts will be cleared up, but that won't air until the fall. Quality-wise, today's episode wasn't the greatest (it felt very rushed - should have been a two-parter at least - and could have dealt with a few questions the transformation brings up), so I think that's adding to some of the grumblings.

The show was absolutely designed to promote toys, but so far they've managed to keep the show and the toy line reasonably separate. Hasbro has introduced several toy pony vehicles that have no counterpart in the show, and that indicates a commitment to show quality - as if they're trusting the show to be good enough to make kids (and, to a lesser extent, adults) want to buy unrelated merchandise.

I really, REALLY don't get the My Little Pony thing. At all. My 15 year old stepson is totally into it, and he can't really explain the whole thing, either.

Anyone have real insight to this phenomenon? Not snarky bullshiat, just an idea of why it's such a hit...

Everyone has different tastes, there are many really popular shows that I don't get either. If you've watched it and gotten to know the characters and still don't like it there's nothing wrong with that, it's just not for you. For myself I just find it entertaining, the characters are well written and the jokes are funny, I love the style of animation, and it just makes me feel good.

I don't think anyone really understands. If they could, they'd reproduce it and package it and sell it.

This essay is what brought it to the attention of /co. From /co, it went viral. Most of us, myself included, got into it from seeing funny image macros and parody videos wanted to see what all the fuss was about. For a kids' show, it features good animation and remarkable characterization, and there are enough pop culture references that an adult can enjoy it.

Why it's so viral I don't fully understand either. I went in as a hipster, and ended up enjoying it on its own merits. It's visual prozac, and the well-night infinite supply of fan-created content (music, animation, art, etc) makes it self-reinforcing. The more content that's produced, the more threads there are like this, on every message board, and the more likely it is that someone will watch a few episodes. Even if not everybody who watches the show gets hooked, as long as the number of people who get into the show exceeds the number of people who abandon it, growth in the various fandom subgroups will remain exponential.

tl;dr: I'll John DeLancie take it from there.

The_Y2P_Problem: Meh, the Powerpuff Girls did the Big Lebowski reference first.

Not surprising, given that Lauren Faust is married to Craig McCracken of Powerpuff Girls fame. There's significant overlap between PPG's staff and MLP's writing, voice acting, and direction staff. (Amy Keating Rogers, Rob Renzetti, Chris Savino, Tara Strong...)

I've watched some with my two-year-old, but only after one day sitting here on the computer and the next thing I knew upon hearing John de Lancie's voice was that I'd put Encounter at Farpoint on for my daughter to watch.  Not that that would be a bad thing, since its never too early to get them hooked on the Star Alliance (as George Takei calls Star Trek and Star Wars fans), but then I watched as Discord was pretty much Q in animated form.

Well, it's definitely 180 degrees from the ORIGINAL My Little Pony, that's for sure...

Those are all good reasons to watch it, and that's the kind of answer I wanted. I was hoping to avoid the typical Fark Snark™ for a change.

Cool, thanks for the response as well. I'll read that link tomorrow, sounds interesting. Things have definitely exploded in entertainment in just the last 10 years, whether it's animation, music or TV. This will be a very unique era to experience.
