PBS...truly the greatest threat to our economy and prosperity as a nation.

2013-02-16 08:33:17 AM
The New York Post hates PBS because they're afraid if you start watching it, you might become too smart to continue buying their paper.

2013-02-16 08:52:14 AM
Seriously?

It's a farking British show, produced by an independent production company. Exactly where, other than DVD sales, is the major cash PBS is getting from the show?

2013-02-16 08:55:23 AM
Some argue that this relatively small percentage means the government subsidy shouldn't be an issue. We would say it proves public broadcasting can do without the taxpayer.

Some might also argue that since pay cable television consists of at least 50 percent shopping and advertising channels and since the little quality television that remains is interrupted by advertising 20-40% of the time, that we shouldn't be paying for that, either.

Let me know when we decide to stop federally-funding our "for-profit" airlines (etc.)

the sad thing is, this is actually true - not just for PBS, but also for the conservative movement as a whole. "intelligent" conservatives are a tiny group of wealthy elites. in order to rule so they may preserve their power, however, they need vast numbers of uneducated people to vote for them (and against their own self interests). this is done by opposing education and focusing on the three "Gs:" guns, god and gays. it's worked for 40 years now.

the trouble is, some of their uneducated minions have actually filtered into positions of power thanks to the tea party and years of political inbreeding. this explains the michelle bachmanns and louis gohmerts of the party. and it is this creeping cancer of imbecility that is destroying the GOP.

No no no.. That means Benedict Cumberbatch is the new Lord Grantham and Frank Darabont is the new showrunner.

At first, I didn't understand the headline, and thought, "Sarah Palin? Boy we're digging." I mean, I'm all for a good jab at the right, but this one seemed like a stretch. I don't like straw men even if I agree with the side making it.

Then I saw it was the New York Post

Oh why did I read that:

According to maybe-British person Stuart Varney, the show is a massive blow to the politics of the left-leaning liberals who love it because the characters are rich...andnice. "Downton Abbey poses a threat to the left, does it not, Brian," Ms. Varney asks a thoroughly confused Brian Kilmeade. "The left says we got to hate these people, but popular America watches a show that says 'These people are okay!'"

BTW: "thoroughly confused Brian Kilmeade" is very redundant.

And even Gretchen Carlson wasn't buying Varney's BS?

Gretchen Carlson gets shut down for her suggestion that a)Not everyone in America hates rich people and b)Maybe people are just getting bored with the stupidity of reality TV and want to watch a smart program about people talking about historical events against a pretty backdrop.

"You can say all of that, but you miss the point," smarms Mr. Varney, missing the point. "You could dismiss it as high-class soap opera  (Editor's Note: Uh...that's not what Carlson was saying), but that misses the point. The politics of  Downton Abbey are important, and it's important that they are popular in America today."

All of this stupidity is actually making me sick to my stomach.

2013-02-16 01:31:32 PM
So, which are we doing today, biatching about government programs that "operate at a loss", or ones that don't, and therefor should be left to the private sector?

The politics of Downton Abbey are the Edwardian era was the last gasp of the British Empire.  The Great War, WWII and capitalism destroyed the estate model in addition to the rise of modern bureaucracy displacing noblesse oblige as a ruling class.

I never heard this joke before but I love it!

Here it is in it's entirety:

1. TheWallStreet Journal is read by people who run the country.

2. The New York Times is read by people who think they run the country.

3. The Washington Post is read by people who think they should run the
country.

4. USA Today is read by people who think they ought to run the country
but don't really understand the Washington Post. They do, however, like
their smog statistics shown in pie charts.

5. The Los Angeles Times is read by people who wouldn't mind running the
country, if they could spare the time, and if they didn't have to leave
L.A. to do it.

6. The Boston Globe is read by people whose parents used to run the
country, and they did a far superior job of it, thank you veddy much.

7. The New York Daily News is read by people who aren't too sure who's
running the country, and don't really care, as long as they can get a
seat on the train.

8. The New York Post is read by people who don't care who's running the
country either, as long as they do something really scandalous,
preferably while intoxicated.

9. The San Francisco Chronicle is read by people who aren't sure there
is a country, or that anyone is running it; but whoever it is, they
oppose all that they stand for. There are occasional exceptions if the
leaders are handicapped, minority, feminist, atheist dwarfs, who also
happen to be illegal aliens from any country orgalaxy as long as they
are democrats.

10. The Miami Herald is read by people who are running another country
but need the baseball scores.

(They basically stole it from  Yes Prime Minister but it's still funny nonetheless)

Someone's still butthurt about Big Bird kicking Mitt Romney's ass.

I have to admit I do kind of adore when the conservative world view rears its ugly head on Downton. Xmas special 2012 spoilers:

Tom's bourgeoisification in late season 3 is kind of the best thing. Man Tom, don't you feel a little bit embarrassed to have all of your left-wing nationalist fervor taken out of you? Well, don't feel too bad. You're upper class now! Indulge in a little bit of luxury - it's your right (by marriage!)

They are certainly dropping a lot of hints that their way of life is secure forever.  Sure, they may need to adapt to the changes in the market like any successful businessman, but being intelligently run by Matthew with advisory help from Lord Grantham and Tom basically means all the drama will just be personal.  Their way of life is secure.

My wife wound up dragging me to the Cranbrook science museum last night. You may recognize Cranbrook as the alma mater of both Mitt Romney and Papa Doc. There were two glaring inconsistencies:

1. Cranbrook's planetarium has daily shows featuring Big Bird, the same giant yellow SOB that Romney tried to kill.
2. An exhibit titled "The Story of Us" attempts to foster tolerance and understanding, saying that we're all basically the same.

Romney must be weeping audibly.
