If it was near the US, besides aiming our nukes at Pakistan, we'd have Fox and Glenn Beck and Rush and Rosie and Sarah Palin entertaining us with all kinds of theories.

"You just know that this is just a plan by Obama to take away our rocks."

They should catscan that guy right away to see if there is a way to detect crazy medically.

You can't fix stupid, but there might be a treatment for this.

Hey crazy Russian dude!
Weapons are 'tested' at White Sands and such.
Breaking windows in Frezmybalzov doesn't help the capitalist conspiracy.

Dear Russians,

Why the hell would we want another Cold War?

Furthermore, how could there be a Cold War when we now  know that your country is essentially the Detroit of Eurasia? Yeah, you have stockpiles of ancient weapons, but we're not exactly concerned over here. The only reason you're a threat these days is because you're probably somewhat fearless because you realize that if we tossed a nuke your way, we couldn't possibly mess up your country any more than it already is.

I say this with love for the Russian people: Be serious. We're trying to be friends. Don't f♥ck it up by pretending that you have anything worth bombing anymore. We like you, but we're just not that into you.

Sincerely,
The United States of America

Jarhead_h: Practical side of things

 - this would have been a great opertunity for Russia to test an anti-ballistic missile system.   There are rumors that they did.

They didn't. There wouldn't have been enough time to even react to press the button to launch the rocket before it was out of range, and besides, it was moving too fast. Besides, a puny missile isn't going to do shiat to it. Now that there is data on mass and speed, when I get home I am going to see what would cause a bigger change in trajectory, a plane launched air to air missile hitting the meteor 90 degrees, or a plane getting hit by a pigeon.

StopLurkListen: Stinkyy: Not that I'm paranoid, stricken with insomnia or that I listen to Coast to Coast, but George Noory is saying meteors were just seen over San Franfreako, and I just heard the emergency alert test on my radio in Virginia.

Yes, there was a meteor over San Francisco today, but one of those 'grain of sand' size ones, of which there are many or dozens that hit the Earth each day. *shrug* Maybe it's a good thing people are taking notice of these kinds of things.

Not really. The last time people started looking up at the sky, we began having lots of UFO sightings. I don't need another round of THAT, thanks very much.

If we've found some way of accelerating big chunks of rock to 33,000+ miles per hour they should just embrace the fact that they're farked.

strangeluck: So the Russians are on to us huh? The part they got wrong is we weren't testing missiles, we're testing a orbital slingshot to hurl space rocks at our enemies.

Railguns are more efficient, but you have to get one on the ISS. Good luck doing that without Russia noticing or Warner Bros suing.

Link.

Oh thanks, so from the video nothing much that I can't see on any night if I sit outside and watch the sky.

For the next day or two, plan on this being like the aftermath of the last "mass shooting." We're going to hear about every bright streak in the sky over any populated area ad nauseam; because we all know that until last night, there's never been a meteor within 100,000 miles of any large city anywhere on Earth. CLEARLY there is suddenly a huge swarm of giant meteors poised to strike.

Oh, and also which the government has known about for quite some time, and why haven't they funded some kind of early-meteor-detection system which we obviously need? It would have been cheap! and easy! What are they hiding? Who are they protecting?

I think that covers most of the bases.

LOL, I'd say say all bases are yours : )

/We cannot allow a meteor gap.
//I sorta miss the cold war, good times : )

They said "the fireball over the Bay Area was not related to asteroids". Soooo rogue fireball? That's comforting. Thanks, news.

What incentive would America even have to do that?

Have Russians looked at their country lately? We're more scared of Venezuela for Christ's sake.

onyxruby: We have people that think 9/11 was an inside job and the CIA sold crack to black people to make the ghetto's worse.

Why should the Russian's be any different? Every country has crazy conspiracy theory people.

Ummm..9/11 wasn't an inside job, but they did sell crack to black people back in the 80s to fund the contras against the sandinistas in Nicaragua.
