Yo dawg, I heard you like banning things...

I think this dickhead is trying to turn New York into his private little version of Demolition Man without Sylvester Stallone (good) or Sandra Bullock in spandex (bad).

skinink: I'm for government being proactive. If polystyrene is bad for the environment, I don't see why it should wind up in landfills to stay there forever.

Not forever it does decompose though slowly.  However, styrene is not considered dangerous to the environment. It just takes up bulk in land fills and is unsightly and lingers when it is litter.

Fun fact. Styrene is generated in some wine making and cheese making and natural processes and has been in our environment/biosphere in some way or another as long as humans have existed and long before.

I didn't even know styrofoam was used for anything besides packing material anymore. I don't think I've seen a styrofoam cup in about 20 years.

Styrofoam isn't "dangerous" to the environment; however, because it degrades so slowly, it lasts almost forever. Worse, I know animals, especially marine animals, will eat it, and it blocks their intestines so they eventually die of blockages. So it's not toxic, but it would be wrong to say it's harmless.

As a New Yorker let me tell you how awful my life is since the mayor banned things like 32oz sodas and styrofoam. Oh wait, my life is EXACTLY THE SAME. Stop overreacting.

KrispyKritter: KrispyKritter: mizchief: KrispyKritter: i saw morans on TV upset that teh mayor wants to bans styrofoam cups. was amazed at their stupid. to see it here on FARK just breaks my heart. i remember HS kids picketing fast food joints in NJ what 20 years ago? that's why it's cardboard and paper wraps these days. THIS IS A GOOD THING. WTF is wrong with you people?

We live in a free country you shiat head. If you don't want people to use Styrofoam then don't buy products that come packaged in them. If you want others to stop using it, then try to convince them not to using facts and reason. If people believe that the benefits out weigh the consequences then so be it.

If Bloomberg wants to be a mini-dictator that's fine with me, i'll simply choose not to live in or spend my tourist dollars in his kingdom. If enough people agree with me, he'll get elected out of office, if not then so be it.

oh Goober surely you can do better than that. you're a redneck Georgia arsehole that never leaves the county; what take places in NYC affects you not. but I give you +1 points for being so ignorant (or is it stupid?) that you can't realize mankind has a responsibility to our own selves to take steps to keep the very planet we depend on for life free from destructive pollutions. you're as dumb as they cum. please don't reproduce.

PS: We don't live in a free country. We live in a Democracy. Moran.

The United States of America is a constitutional republic. The one of the main differences being that individuals have freedoms that can't be taken away by the mob rule of a pure democracy.

Not wanting to live in a nanny state where everything that is bad for me is made illegal, doesn't mean that I fill up my trash every week with Styrofoam. I buy most of my food a grocery store because I like to cook my own meals, but when I do get takeout I prefer a container that keeps it hot. I then recycle it because the way our trash system works, you pay per bag of trash, but all your recyclables are free. When people are able to think and live freely workable ideas like that flourish vs. having one man make reactionary bans that just insult the people and solve nothing.

Besides, real rednecks grow their own food and pollute much less than your average city slicker anyway.

But I guess your right. If my city smelled like a pile of shiat and had garbage all over the street like NYC, maybe you do need a nanny mayor to save you from your own filth.

The movie wasn't THAT bad.

Subby must not be from a city.  This garbage has been banned for quite some time in cities as it is not recycalble.  Do they know that trashing your own environment/home trashes them as well?

Banning styrofoam

DB: As a New Yorker let me tell you how awful my life is since the mayor banned things like 32oz sodas and styrofoam. Oh wait, my life is EXACTLY THE SAME. Stop overreacting.

Just because these two things didn't effect your life doesn't mean they were right in doing it, sooner or later they will ban something that you do care about and you'll have no right to complain seeing as you bent over and let them shove all the other bans up your ass.

2013-02-15 11:34:57 PM
I can see banning styrofoam in places like fast food/take-out restaurants due to the shear volume of it they go through, but banning people from buying it in stores for their personal use at home is simply ignorant.

Day_Old_Dutchie: NullReferenceException:

For instance, the Xbox we just got was packaged in some very ingeniously-folded corrugated box-board.
It just goes into the recycling with the other cardboard, no problem.

Just for reference to you gamers out there, a month or so ago, I sold a Gamecube box - JUST the box - for $20 (the one for the platinum cube, so somewhat limited compared to the black/purple). I could have sold another one back in December but I was too lazy to break up the package deal with the actual Gamecube.

Don't throw your boxes out; they do actually retain some of the value, plus it's easier when you move.

if you don't think there is a fundamentally farked up situation when somebody bans something as asinine as a 32oz soda then i seriously think your previous life was a german in the 1930s.

Polystryene uses fewer resources than paper and has superior performance.  AND... *everything* lasts forever in a sanitary landfill.  I saw a landfill that was being dug up years ago, and the newspapers and telephone books from 40 years ago were fresh like the day they were discarded.

He should move to southern California, where there's a city out near Palm Springs called Banning.

jehovahs witness protection: How does someone who tries to control every aspect of so many lives keep getting elected? New Yorkers are the best trained sheep on Earth.

They have to be.

That many humans living in close proximity to each other with no actual resources to draw on is a naturally unstable system. It's made workable only by the fact that everyone does exactly what they're supposed to do.

My husband has a theory, and I suspect he is correct. That political leanings are more a result of population density than anything else. Densely populated urban centers cannot support much in the way of individuality due to the lack of resources and their potential impingement on other people. For example: Someone who wants to work on their plumbing instead of calling a plumber can do that in their own home with minimal risk (except perhaps sleeping on the couch for a while if he screws it up and paying for fixing stuff), but someone who risks screwing up the plumbing of an entire mutli-story building is going to catch a lot more grief from their neighbors and building manager. Possibly even jail time. One leads to someone potentially learning to fix their own stuff, the other leads to someone depending on a "professional" to come fix things for them because you can *not* fix it yourself.

A lifetime of either of those is going to result in thinking pattern tendencies. (As happens to all mammals).

For the record, New York City has ~8 million residents. New York STATE has ~18 million. There's also a ton more landmass outside the NYC. It takes over six hours to drive across the state west to east or vice versa, and there's a lot more to it than that one festering pile of concrete.

We're not all crazy NYC residents who vote for Bloomberg. And trust me, as annoying as Cuomo can be, Paladino would have been SO MUCH WORSE...

It's both amusing and sad that you are oblivious to the fact that by the time they do make a law that negatively impacts your life, they'll have 500 precedents making the law legitimate, which means that you'll have no recourse to do anything about it.

Q: What is the purpose of a ban?
A: To solve a problem.

Q: Did the ban solve a problem?
A: No, Life went on unchanged.

Q: So... What was the real purpose of a ban?
A: To make politicians look like tough guys against a problem they don't understand.

Suggestion: If you are a politician and you want to look tough without actually helping anyone, why not photoshop your face onto an action movie poster or have a photo op with some guns.

dl.dropbox.com

See, now you look tough without having to put any effort into actually being competent!
