I think there's a lot more reasons that this will never happen than "it's rational."

2013-02-15 01:45:01 PM
Yup. It totally makes sense to have state lines that need to shift every four years as the population changes. No possible ramifications there, this is an awesome idea that only won't be taken seriously because people are stupid and entrenched in their stale old paradigms.

Yeah, but you aren't the first to think you could draw maps that are rational.

Here's one based on water made by a man who knew a thing or 2 about water in the West:

So ... this is Fark worthy and that's about it.

What's the point of this? Just get rid of the damn Senate and electoral college rather than just hitting the reset button.

2013-02-15 01:53:58 PM
The real problem with this, those new states don't sound American enough.

Firelands. Awesome.

I guess that's one way to go about it.

Not to mention the logistics of something like this. It would be a nightmare.

Why in the fark would you name the state that is 90% Chicago "Gary"?

Its hard to see unless you get the enlarged version, but Chicago is its own state, and "Gary" surrounds it... including all the Chicago suburbs.

Why not get rid of states all together and just rename ourselves to 'United'?

Pros:
- Legalised Pot
- No states rights bullshiat
- No more wasteful state government
- More efficient taxation

Yeah, like we are going to pay attention to anyone between Chinati and Atchafalaya. Those people are as bad as the Canaverals.

As a resident of the far northern burbs of Chicago, fark the name "Gary". I want no association with that stinky hole of decay and unemployment.

/Chiwaukee is much more appropriate for my area

Hmmm, my state gets rid of Chicago, stays roughly the same size but  I would have to live in Sangamon and we would get StL.... man that is a tough call.

2013-02-15 02:50:15 PM
FTFA: Redivide America into 50 new units of equal population. Each new state will have roughly 6,175,000 inhabitants - which is our 2010 population divided by 50.

Yeah right, because nobody will try to get this completely gerrymandered to their advantage every time they are in control, as we see it does not happen today with the districts for the House.

Honestly, the answer is simply that the US is too conservative for that.  I wish that weren't true, but it is.  And it would probably take a couple of generations for that to change.  The first step would have to be a change the deep suspicion we have for education.

2013-02-15 02:51:09 PM
No, this idea is totally stupid and short sighted.

Look, if you'd told people in 1940 that three of the top 10 cities in the US would be in Texas and three in California, they'd probably have laughed at you.

Populations grow, move and change.  Altering borders for today's population only ensures that you will have to continue altering them as populations change in the future.  Pretty sure people aren't going to be happy if their borders, and thus the laws and taxes they live under, change every 10 years with a new census.

2013-02-15 02:51:13 PM
It could work as simply electoral states and not actual states. Then changes can be made every census  Although, it does kind of seem like Gerrymandering writ large.

So we'll get gerrymandered states every four or whatever year. How's that going to work when I'm paying state taxes or determining whether my kid goes to this school district or another? One year, I'm electing candidates for the senate from one state, next time, I elect candidates for the senate in another state and I haven't moved.

Who the heck is actually representing me and why would they bother if I'm not going to matter in the next election cycle?

That's been pretty much over since the civil war.

I have a suggestion:

The current population divided by electoral college votes is around 580,000 people.

If you have a state population smaller than the Scranton / Wilkes-Barre / Hazelton metro area in Pennsylvania, and that's hardly NYC or LA we're talking here, you need to attract more people. Because you either don't get an EC vote until you do, or all your piss-poor desolate states are pooled together and your governors draw lots to see who gets the EC votes allocated to all of you this time around.

2013-02-15 03:01:00 PM
Was hoping for a state called "Whargarbl."

2013-02-15 03:01:42 PM

BitwiseShift: why are the two largest cities in the US in the same small state?

Where do you see that?

BTW I did some arithmetic, and to divide 310 million people into 50 even states, each state would have 6.2 million people.  This would mean that New York City (population 8.2 million) would either have to be split up or be made into a state bigger than the other states.

You do need regional management. There's no way a federal bureaucracy can handle dealing with all the minuscule state-level and city-level issues. Also, we 300+ million people can't agree to all the same rules for every little issue, so if we accept that, locally, there should be some control by a local governmental entity, then we need to decide the boundaries for that local entity. Whether you call that a city, a district, a region or a division, conference. league, or what have you, there has to be local and multi-local entities.

There's nothing inherently wrong with out current city-state-country model. And there's nothing inherently wrong with the electoral college model either. Changing the way we elect our government leaders is no different than changing the value of a touchdown from 6 points to 4 points or to 9 points. It changes only the strategic decisions of whether to try for a score or to kick a field goal or punt. It doesn't change how the game is played: you still want to win.

2013-02-15 03:03:27 PM
So they proposed fifty "states" with equal population.
I have an idea: What if we go one step forward and make that 1 electoral vote assigned to some 240 million or so of tiny "states" each with equal population of 1? Hmm,  but I don't know how to call it....

LOLOLOL. It's hilarious to be dumb because people will talk about how stupid it is and that means I'm smart and I win! Or something.

Aka, welcome to Fark.
