Of course it can -- that's why they won't let fighter jets break the sound barrier in populated areas.

TY - I've been reading since posting and Wikipedia indicates buildings in good repair should be able to withstand the sonic boom created by a craft like Concorde or space shuttle (I was wondering since the Concorde flew over my house when I was a kid).  Since the bigger the object, the bigger the boom (in addition to the air burst) the scale of damage makes sense to me now.

When they talk about the last time something like this happened, the Tunguska event, they indicate that the air burst caused the damage.

/if you don't like/trust wiki see this
// and heck, it could happen again tonight! (ok, prolly not, but still this is almost amusing in as how it was written 3 days ago and talks about the asteroid pass happening tonight will not hit the earth so, ya know, nothing like Tunguska is going to happen again for the next 900-2000 years.)

Was that in the mid- '80s hen it was on a tour of the world? I watched it land in Orlando. They said on the news that it came out of mach over the ocean due to regulations.

I was hoping someone would note this - they had a HELL of a time getting a Sonic Boom to break anything. You'd have to be very low to do it, way lower than anything would operate during normal circumstances.

In the 1990s the shuttle boomed over north Orlando on an approach. Where I worked I know that the body shop had paint cans fall off shelves and I think a couple panels of the big glass in front cracked.

This object was how much bigger than an F-18?
This object was travelling how much faster than an F-18?
F18 quotes 1334MPH top speed.
I've heard estimates that the object was the size of a bus and travelling about 30,000 mph.
So if the sizes are similar the speeds were not. It would be 20 times easier to make a damaging sonic boom with this object.

An F-18 is larger and heavier (56ft long, ~18 tons loaded weight) than a bus.  They don't go 30,000 mph though, so that would certainly make a difference.

Teufelaffe: An F-18 is larger and heavier (56ft long, ~18 tons loaded weight) than a bus. They don't go 30,000 mph though, so that would certainly make a difference.

The latest estimates from NASA are roughly 55 feet (17 meters), estimated mass 10,000 tons, speed about 40,000 mph on entering atmosphere.

So F-18 size if the F-18 was a rough sphere, where of course a plane is actually substantially thinner and narrower than it is long, but over 550 times heavier.

(side note: curb weight with passengers of a standard Gillig Low Floor bus is about 40,000lbs, or 20 tons.  So the F-18 is lighter.  But you'd expect that, given that it's made to fly).

Also, Phil Plait had this to say:
After looking through more footage, it's become clear that the multiple booms heard were in fact explosions, and not just shock waves from the meteoroid's passing through the air. In some videos, you can see multiple flashes of light inside the contrail, which are clearly from the rock breaking up and then burning up very rapidly and with intense energy-the very definition of an explosion. Over the course of just a couple of seconds, the large energy of motion of the meteoroid was converted into heat, and this exploded with a yield of several thousand tons of TNT.

So talk of sonic booms is mostly moot - it was that sucker detonating that did the damage.

'Glass?  GLASS? Who gives a shiat about glass?'

'That city is going to need a paint job and a shiatload of screen doors.'

Translation of some parts:

0:58 'I don't know, I don't know, it went right overhead...let's get some vodka..;
1:49  'Did you see anything before the sound, what was it?  Does anyone have any vodka?'
3:19  'Stand back from the building, more glass might fall...hey, hey, do you have any vodka in your bag?'
