Well. It was nice knowin' all y'all.  I'm off to my (non existent) bunker in the foothills. Enjoy the robot apocalypse.

I know a few people that could give that computer a challenge.

Like they're gonna CALL it Skynet after all the bad publicity.

They'll go with "Dan" or something friendly sounding.

They'll call it "Crick", in preparation for its merge with IBM's Watson.

// THAT's SkyNet - telling us not to panic in modern parlance while resisting hax and blowing us up real good

How about Hal? Hal would be a good name for a computer

And System Shock 2 recently landed at GOG.

Coincidence? I think not!

2013-02-15 01:45:46 PM
But the entire earth being destroyed by a cheerful army of terminator robots lead by "Dan" would be awesome.

Does this mean the Puppet Master doesn't need to bone the Major anymore?

While subby's headline is great for the article, this quote:

"Nature isn't like that," says UCL computer scientist Peter Bentley. "Its processes are distributed, decentralised and probabilistic. And they are fault tolerant, able to heal themselves. A computer should be able to do that."

made me go right to:

- I don't think you're giving us our due credit. Our scientists have done things which nobody's ever done before...
- Yeah, yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should.

Also, I have zero understanding of how the computer does what it does so this quote seems contradictory:

Rather than using a program counter, the systems are executed at times chosen by a pseudorandom number generator, designed to mimic nature's randomness. The systems carry out their instructions simultaneously, with no one system taking precedence over the others, says Bentley.

If everything is happening simultaneously, why does the number generator have to chose when things are executed?  Doesn't that just mean you are doing everything in a random order, rather than a preset sequence, and nothing is actually simultaneous?  Please fill me in if I am totally off base.

I read this in his voice too and it creeped me out.

I'm still bummed the Robopocalypse movie has been scrapped.  I know I shouldn't be; it had the potential to really suck.  But I like bad sci-fi almost as much as I like good sci-fi.

We burnt the sky, to remove their power source. Which is why we're all batteries now.
