I hate when people make points I agree with like they were trying to make a strawman,

2013-02-15 06:22:51 AM
Not really.  What better way can you think of to get Republicans to cut Congressional pay than to get someone like Nancy Pelosi to denounce measures like this?

didn't she just lower the take home pay of millions of taxpayers?  they have more dignity than Congress.

Yes, all by her lonesome, she commanded, like a dictator, and millions were felled to their knees, screaming in agony that they may have to wait another month to buy that new BMW to replace last year's tired model.

That was kind of a dick thing to say. The 'dignity' of congress pretty much died during the Gingrich speakership. The Teahadists have just been partying on the grave.

One would actually have to possess a shred of dignity before it can be undermined.

Did this person forget that dignified people have a higher approval rating than Nickelback?

I just find it very hypocritical the same people who vote to raise taxes and tell us to sacrifice aren't willing to make the same sacrifices themselves - republicans included.

Yes, to suggest raising taxes, one must allow all of your income to be turned over as tax to the Federal government, strip yourself naked and parade through the streets while being beaten by reeds, crying in mercy for the American people.  Anything other than total supplication and humiliation invalidates any point you make.

Of course, the reverse is not true if you demand massive Federal cuts to programs while hypocritically protecting your own district, or railing against government programs and then standing for photo ops for the very programs you bitterly opposed as destroying the country.

"I don't think we should do it; I think we should respect the work we do," Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol. "I think it's necessary for us to have the dignity of the job that we have rewarded."

Congress doesn't do dick except squabble at each other like children and take payoffs and they never had dignity. No one respects congress. People pretend they do when it suits them but everyone knows they're a bunch of do nothings, most of which are on the take. Christ, it's all right there on C-Span.

Okay,. how much *should* members of Congress be paid?

If I use this inflation calculator,
http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

Congress salary in 1925 was $7,500, today that would be $92,000, instead of the $169,000 they are paid now.

Considering the job approval rating they should be happy that they have any salary at all

Just more entitlement attitude from the left.  That and it is all about feeeeeelings.  Results don't matter.

I thought Congress was making $174,000.

Anyway at those sort of wages, you'd need to steal to put food on the table.

I've always thought that congressional pay should be tied to the economy with there being a "cutoff point" where they do not get paid at all until things improve. If we all are doing well due to the policies put in place, they do just as well. When the economy is going down the tubes, no pay for you. At least until things start getting better.

2013-02-15 11:10:13 AM
This debate isn't about the economy, it's about hypocrisy.

Look at the facts:

Since 1991, Congress has had its pay raised 13 times (including this most recent raise), from $101,900 to over $175,000. Each of those pay raises went through smoothly, and in fact Congress has also turned DOWN a pay raise 7 times. Over that same period of time, minimum wage has gone up only 5 times, from $4.25/hr to $7.25/hr. Each time the increase was fought for tooth and nail, and only passed on bitter party-line votes.

In short, while both you and the minimum wage worker have seen 58% increases in pay over a 21-year period, those increases have been far from equal.

At no single time in that period did you Congress members  ever make less than FIVE TIMES the average personal income for the American public. They have one of the best health care plans in the world. They get an average of eleven WEEKS vacation per year (not counting another 10 'constituent weeks' in your home district). They have a hefty federal pension, and significant benefits for life.

By contrast, a minimum-wage worker who worked full time (40 hours per week) would never have made less than ONE HALF the average personal income for the American public. They would have had no meaningful health care plan to speak of (a hodgepodge of medicaid and private plans that would be disproportionately expensive and offer only very basic coverage). They would likely get zero vacation (most employers limit minimum wage hours so as to avoid paying benefits), but if they did, the national average is 7 days. They would have no pension, since a minimum-wage job doesn't pay enough to set money aside in a 401(k) and also pay bills and eat.

Simply put, Congress make 10 to 15 times what a minimum-wage worker makes, and when you calculate in the cost of your cadillac health care, vacation, federal pension, and other benefits, it's more like 20 - 30 times as much. Yes, their job comes with significant stress, but that stress is more 'whatever will our party do if we can't get brown people to vote for us one day' and less 'I need to eat, pay rent, buy gas so I can get to work, pay the electric bill, and take the kid to the dentist, but I only have enough money to do any 2 of those'.

Dignity has nothing to do with it. It's more simple: you're asking those who can afford it least to do what you yourself are unwilling to do. And it's happening on both sides of the aisle. GOP or Democrat, Congress members vote themselves raises, but then compromise on minimum wage ALL the time.

Where I come from, that's not called 'partisan politics', that's called 'being a hypocritical asshole'.

And they wonder why their approval rating is mired in the low teens?

Serving in Congress used to mean you left the farm, you served your country for a few months and you returned to the farm. It didn't mean making a career out of it and forming political dynasties from it.

I realize times and situations change but we're still clinging to the Second Amendment which was written when everyone had muskets and the people actually had the ability to rise up against the government. So we hole on to tradition with some things, other things not so much.

Well, using the same argument, maybe Congress should pay their fair share too by passing on a pay increase this year?

Sure, but Congress doesn't make $2m/year.  Congress doesn't even make the $250k bracket that was the old upper bracket, now that we have a new one at 400 or 500, I honestly don't remember.

In other words, Congress doesn't fit into the rhetoric you are trying to shoehorn them into.

True, it's more the principal than anything else. As of June 2011 Nancy had a minimum net worth of $34.2 million, and yet she's biatching about how getting a pay cut would somehow reduce the dignity of her office. Meanwhile, there is a large percentage of Americans that are unemployed or "underemployed". Then again, in her eyes (or any politician's for that matter) I guess none us had any dignity to begin with.

Aren't Republicans in the majority?  Don't they, like, run things over there?

Couldn't they write up a bill to lower salaries and, you know, vote on it?

Why is the awesome Republican Party (who does not feel entitled like those stupid libs) do this?

So, why doesn't the MAJORITY in the House do something about it?

After all, if Nancy Pelosi is against a Congressional paycut, then it must be a GREAT idea, right?

Oh, and she also said this in TFA:

"It's a hard question to ask me because most of my colleagues are the breadwinners in their families," she said. "A pay cut to me doesn't mean as much."

OMG SO ENTITLED.

Congress isn't coming from the pool of "average people". It's coming from the pool of people that become CEOs, member of boards of directors, presidents of universities, partners in law firms, and so on. So they expect pay in line with their other job options.

Now, I'm not saying it's good that all those other professions make as much relative money as they do. But if we want intelligent people with a in depth understanding of complex laws running the country* we have to compensate them accordingly.

Besides, paying them more would better insulate congressmen from bribery lobbyists both while they're in office and after; there'd be less pressure to cater to big monied interests in hopes of cashing out and assuming a high-paying gig said big monied interests.

And apparently the full quote was:

"Well, as you know, that's why I don't like across‑the‑board cuts because - you used one example, but there are many other examples where an across‑the‑board cut may not make the best sense.  Why should people who work on Capitol Hill pay that price and be treated as Members of Congress are?  It's a hard question to ask me because most of my colleagues are the breadwinners in their families.  A pay cut to me doesn't mean as much.  I mean, I don't think we should do it.  I think we should respect the work we do.  I think it's necessary for us to have the dignity of the job that we have rewarded, but [if there is] an across‑the‑board cut, there's an across‑the‑board cut, that's just the way it is.

Mr. Van Hollen has been a leader, as Mr. Hoyer has, and others, on the impact that this will have on federal employees, including people on Capitol Hill, and I wanted to yield to him to talk about that."

So she's talking about regular staffers, not just members of Congress. But out of context snippets is kind of like real reporting.

Because almost none of them are qualified to do anything else anyway (except the lawyers) and getting into Congress is a step towards the White House. They'll still run for Congress with less pay. There's no need to bribe them to do the same shiatty job they would have done anyway.

Besides, paying them more would better insulate congressmen from bribery lobbyists both while they're in office and after; there'd be less pressure to cater to big monied interests in hopes of cashing out and assuming a high-paying gig said big monied interests.
