FTA: There are currently 110 million cases in the country, with half of those affecting young adults ages 15 to 24.

Damn. Nearly 1/3 of the population has STDs. And 1/6 of the hot people.

The obvious solution is abstinence-only education, duh.

Yeah, that's great headline writing right there.

That headline leaves me with a burning desire to clap

2013-02-15 10:05:18 AM
What does this mean:  costing the nation $15.6 billion.

Is that the cost of medical care, lost earnings, decreased production?  Also, it works out to ~$156 per person (the article states 100 Million people).  I'm not disputing it's accuracy, it's just that without context it's meaningless.

Why does it hurt when my headline goes green?

Half the cases are in young people, not half the rate. It's even more tragic for hot people than we thought!

I know this is begging for tin foil, but I think it would be really nice if vaccines were compulsory at the DMV or something. Then jenny mcdumbbiatch and people too in a rush to wrap it up wouldn't put a strain on everyone else.

Not necessarily: I suspect that the cases involve quite a few regular repeat customers.

What ever you do, don't get the TeaParty strain of the STD.  It'll shrink the size of your government.

chrylis: Not necessarily: I suspect that the cases involve quite a few regular repeat customers.I used to work for CDC in the STD program.  A 'case' is generally a disease.  So a person who is coninfected with gonorrhea & chlamydia represents two cases. The rate that seems to hold pretty true is that 1 in 4 young adults has an STD.  That holds true for tiny podunk towns or large metropolitan areas.  Most of the cases are chlamydia, which is often without symptoms, so the kids don't know they're infected unless they get tested (or unless the girls end up in the hospital with PID.)Break the rate down by gender and race, and oh boy, you get into a big ole politically incorrect mess.

Even still, that's a frighteningly high chance of your next sexual partner giving you some kind of crotchrot that not even Ajax can scrub off.

Not unless they somehow manage to fall into a pot of boiling water and there just happens to be lemon and melted butter nearby.

We should institute a common policy in which only a couple joined in holy matrimony for the purposes of procreation should have intercourse. As homosexuals can not procreate they will be barred from sexual relations. It is decreed!

Actually, I think this was one of the reasons for the no-sex-before-marriage religious rules: to cut down on disease.

Have you gotten control over your genital warts yet?

More likely it was to ensure that any kids are the issue of the husband, and that a son would have a legal right to the property of his father.  It's possible that disease was a part of it, but since that taboo existed long before the germ theory was really taken seriously, it would have amounted to "people get sick if they have premarital sex, so clearly God is punishing them for having premarital sex!"  Basically the same deal as the shellfish thing.

Great.  Now people with STDs will be persecuted like the fatties who actually deserve it.

We're not all drains on society, y'know.

/i mean, they aren't.

The solution is for the government to pay for women's birth control pills, because those totally protect against STDs, right?

/"Women's health," indeed.
