The Senate could have restored the power of a majority last month if Mr. Reid had agreed to a proposal to reduce this abuse, but he did not.

You can't expect reason and compromise from a group asshole like the GOP.

I can pretty much guarantee that the next time Republicans get control of the Senate, they will get rid of the filibuster.  They won't give it a second thought.

Why is it the leadership of the Democratic Party doesn't get this? You're dealing with people who won't compromise and have no mercy. Just freaking do it.

I remember watching Al D'Amato on the floor of the Senate talking for hours to maintain a filibuster. The idea that you actually have to get up there and talk to keep it going isn't new, hell Jimmy Stewart had to do it. What is so wrong in bringing that back?

As stupid as Reid is for giving away filibuster reform, that doesn't change that for the first time in history, Republicans have directly endangered the country by blocking a SecDef from taking their job.

from an article on msn.com:

"The Obama administration's confidence is rooted in statements Thursday by a number of Republicans who have said they intend to switch their vote after the recess and support moving toward a final vote for Hagel. "

'Confidence' is a reference to the expectation that Hagel will eventually be confirmed. With that in mind...

What the fark is the point of participating in a filibuster now if you know you plan on voting in favor of confirmation later?  These people are worthless.

Goddammit, I really wish the Democrats had a set of balls. While I'm generally not for harboring grudges in politics, I really farking hope the next time Republicans are in power the Democrats filibuster, block, impede, stall and kill every goddamn measure, nomination, bill and anything else the Republicans put forward simply out of spite. I mean, fark it... politics is already a goddamn joke in this country, why not go the full 9?

I'm also farking tired of Republicans saying shiat like "we will block him/her because we don't know enough about what he/she made doing things" when the asshole they nominated for the Presidency had such a shady goddamn past (was he or wasn't he retired from Bain?) and completely refused to let any information on his taxes paid go public.

Fark you, Republicans. Fark you in your old, stuffy, wrinkly old assholes, you hypocritical sons of biatches.

This bunch has achieved since 2009 a lot of "firsts", stuff completely without any precedent and valid justification that few years back would be completely unbelievable even by themselves. What republican would have believed you, say ten years ago, that they would be blocking a SecDef nomination (none the less) by a Dem President of a farking Republican nominee? Their first priority has been and will be to sabotage the blah guy until he is out of office, no matter the cost. Will see more "firsts" from them. Group of assholes, all of them.

I'm looking forward to a ridiculous trumped up party-line impeachment by the Republican House, then a filibuster of the vote for removal by the Senate Republicans so they can try to keep Obama in a PR limbo.

Republicans filibustering their own impeachment proceedings. That'd be a true first.

Well, you guys made it a gig and proved it could score points.  You want to blame the tactic?  Blame yourselves.

And the Democrats have never blocked a SecDef before.  Nobody ever has.

Reid, they are going to walk all over you until you grow a spine. You have to stop beating around the bush if you don't want to get shot down in flames again and again.  Hopefully this will prove to be a touch too much and he will stop acting like some abandoned love hungry man that just wants people to like him.  You have to understand that your political opponents are going to treat you like some night prowler.  If you want blood you can't just smile and shake hands, you have to get it hot, tell them it's your way or the highway, to hell!

I'm honestly a little surprised other Senate Democrats haven't staged a coup against him. They can't be too terribly happy with the compromise "reform" that went down.

I think it certainly qualifies as an "agreement"; the rules changes were a bipartisan "compromise" passed with large majorities.
