#2 - War of the Roses

As a married guy with two kids here's what I have to tell you....

...sitting at home with a Domino's Pizza and a six pack while "The Thing" gets a solid viewing at peak volume has its merits.  Don't discount it because someone decided to make up some BS that you need to not be alone on a specific day.

So order the 'za, make it a Guinness Extra Stout and crank the DVD over.  Get loaded and enjoy the day.  It's no different than any other.

Valentine's Day happens to be my birthday and I was separated and divorced (amicably) over the last couple of years, but generally look for a good anti-Valentine's movie to see for my birthday.
  Last year was Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and it was the perfect choice.  Unfortunately the pickings this year are slim - might just go with schlock and see Hansel and Gretel 3D.

Fight Club.

I am just so happy I'm not being forced to do anything today that I don't want to do.

/why yes... I am single.
//How did you know?

My wife and I watched "War of the Roses" and pretty much assumed it was a reality show about divorce.  So we stayed married.

/ Have you ever had angry sex?
// There's another kind?
/// Danny DeVito didn't stay married either.

If you can't find that, Taxi Driver.

Yeah, that'd be a good one.

It has the appearance of the a traditional romantic comedy, but each character has a serious flaw. As a result, none of them get what they want romantically. Even in the epilogue it's clear that Jane is going to repeat the same mistakes all over again by putting her career ahead of her life (which comes off as kinda anti-feminist, but I know a lot of men and women like her who don't see the connection between choosing a job that requires them to work 80hrs/week and whey their romantic life is non-existent).

/ah, the days when James L. Brooks made quality movies

I'd suggest Lars Con Trier's The Anti-christ. That movie made me feel uneasy around my wife, or any other woman for that matter, for several hours.

Joe Orton is a hot playwright on the London Theater scene (Entertaining Mr. Sloane,  Loot, the posthumously produced/awesome What The Butler Saw), he's good-looking, gay, rumo(u)red to be writing a screenplay for The Beatles. His lover Kenneth Halliwell, is none of those things and oh my was he bitter about that.  9 hammer blows to Orton's head + 22 Nembutal washed down with grapefruit juice (= almost instant OD) in August 1967 = not a pretty ending.

(500) Days of Summer: The brilliance of Marc Webb's revisionist take on the genre is that, first off, the girl comes across as the bad guy?

Bull. I didn't love the movie, but I liked it enough. And one of the reasons I liked it is because it didn't play either person as all good or bad. Despite seeing it through his lens, there's plenty there to blame JGL for. I think it showed that some people just don't work together, no matter how much one/both of them want it to.

Also, the scene where it compares what he expected to happen at her party against what actually happened was excellent. I think we've all been there.

Kanemano: This Gem

Now that's an anti-romance movie, that's more of what I was thinking about.  Took some cajones to end that movie the way they did.  More movies should end that way.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character was just as bad.  He was a selfish, needy little shiat who blamed other people for his lack of satisfaction with life.

I second Chasing Amy. Although Ben Affleck's "breakup" with Jason Lee was sadder than his with Joey Lauren Adams.

I love  War Of The Roses.It's as dark as it is entertaining. Had never heard of  Happinesstil a couple of days ago when a young co-worker told me about it. After hearing his description and reading the Wikipedia and IMDb entries....uh, no thanks.

I farked up and thought today was tomorrow so i missed my weekly with my psychoanalyst. instead i got to spend the day baby sitting my 82 yr old bitter insane (not kidding) wheelchair bound mother. do me a favor and pick out a big stack of movies and beat me to death with them. oh, my wife, you ask? she's not so much as held my hand in 10 years. so, cards and gifts aren't big at my house.

What do they all have in common?

Like Temple of Doom, there's a scene where a heart is physically ripped out of a person's chest.
