basemetal: //but I wanted to see that show live

I would also love to see Lady Gaga live, if just for the performance.  Her music is okay.  I suspect she'll continue to mature artistically as time goes by.

I suspect you'll be spectacularly wrong about this.

yeah, she is pretty much already following the Marilyn Manson template - be outrageous, dress like a fool while being unattractive, make music that is an afterthought than barely holds up, be spectacularly popular for a couple years and reach a point where nothing you do is shocking any longer and no one really cares.

she may still sell some records but outrageous only takes you so far.

I don't think she's all that unattractive, really. Her face can be pretty sometimes; even in that KFC picture posted above, her face looks nice.

But everything else you said is dead on.  And her music kind of sucks.

with enough makeup and a distance of about 10 feet, she approaches cute.

with no makeup and a distance of 12 inches or so she looks like hammered shiat.

she had a sort of nerd-girl cuteness about her when she was 18 or so (mostly because most very young, thin women can look cute unless their face is just unfortunate).  The ensuing 8 years or so have really been rough on her.

doczoidberg: The fact that her tour wouldn't work with her just sitting down and singing only proves how talentless she really is.

She actually had a labral tear. That sounds painful.

Sounds more like a gynecological problem.

Yeah me too. Talent is a huge turn on.

My opinion of her raised several notches after her piano duet with Elton John from the Grammys a few
years ago, where she proved that she does, indeed, have actual musical chops.

And I have to admit that I like EDGE OF GLORY and JUDAS and have them on my iPod, even though I
recognize them as the disposable electro pop/dance crap they are.

While I'm not a fan, I do think she actually has some talent. The problem is, now days you have to have an over the top live show to be considered a 'talented entertainer'.

Bette Midler had that "mermaid in a wheelchair" routine. Maybe Gaga could rip-off that for her concerts?

I think that would probably be a disappointing show for her fans.

If they would be disappointed to have only her music at a concert then they must not like her music much.

That's not what they paid for though. Plus the crazy stage show is part of her brand.

There was a time when it was kinda expected that your musical act would be entertainers who would utilize costumes and spectacle... then the soul crushingly over-earnest 90s came along and sucked the joy out of everything.

Buttknuckle: Flab: Buttknuckle: CSB!

Someone needs to brush up on their Fark memes.

What is to get?  Besides the sarcasm, of course.

Once upon a time, there was a Farker who said that he had a view of Logan airport from his hotel room on 9/11, so that apparently made his connection to the events that transpired that day special.  It's just like Omarion asking his fans to pray for him because he was in Londond when the subway bombers hit.

During the recording of Sorry Ma a studio visitor noted vomit stains on the ceiling.  An engineer explained, "They barfed into their hands and threw it up there."

frepnog: anyone else think this is bullcrap and a cover story for shiatty ticket sales?

This. It's been fairly well documented that even when her concerts sell out, she still loses money because the costuming and show expenses are beyond belief.  Couple that with the fact that she's earning less and less revenue from her label, I'd say she's going broke FAST.

FooDog: nekom: I never cared much for her music, but I do admire the over the top showmanship.  So I wish her well in her recovery.

Yeah, but her showman's hip sucks! Badabish!

/Seriously, isn't hip replacement something you need an AARP card for?

As someone who had a mis-diagnosed spinal issue ("growing pains" growing up because "one leg didn't grow as fast as the other" -- completely wrong they discovered, finally, when I was 23 or 24 and walking with a cane,) plenty of non-crazy things can fark your hips up; they said mine were so worn they'd think I was in my 50s or 60s.

Indiviual tastes in music can eclectic to say the least....and occasionally there can be a rush to judgement..I did the pop-in at a buddy's house a while back and joined him as he watched television...After about an hour,I'm trying to figure why he's watching a Hanson Brothers video...and why is this video so long???   Turns out it was Children Of The Corn IV.....

I am a bit bummed; I was going to see her in Chicago (only my second "arena" show: my first one being in 1986--Iron Maiden and Twisted Sisier at the Cow Palace).
anyway...
Per the talent vs gimmick arguments, students in my composition classes have been arguing that idea for their first paper. One of the sources quoted in one of the articles I provided (the speaker was Doucette from Matchbox 20, so...) expressed something a lot of the students agreed with:
"Eventually Lady Gaga's not going to be able to wear the meat dress," he says. "But she's not going to have a problem, because she's been, like, I can do this. And when (she) gives you a regular song, that's going to be as shocking as the meat dress, with her sitting there at the piano with no crazy hat on."
here's the article, if ya care:

That, and it seems most people in this thread are forgetting how broken the music industry is now.  The only 'hits' we hear on the radio are what megaliths like Clear Channel have run through focus groups after focus groups.

My  wife was dragging me to the show so I pulled her up on spotify.  I can't remember any track names yet but she has some really great stuff that isn't on the radio, both musically and lyrically.  And some of her most powerful stuff is just her on the piano singing 'normal' versions of her pop songs.

Yeah, but I contend something had to be done.  By the late 80s, music had passed beyond the glam stage and was deep into full-on silly.

She's a talented woman who went to a prestigious music school and has formal training. The show biz types she ran into while trying to get representation told her either that she was not attractive enough or looked too much like Cher (as if Gaga's Little Monsters know who Cher is) and that she had to do something with her image. Pragmatic person that she is, she went along with it and did the bleached hair and funny costumes. It seems that female pop stars are required to do their performances jumping around in sequinned bikinis these days.

Long story short: haters gotta hate. I think she's entertaining and hope she recovers fully from her injury.

but we can still use the golf ball dimpler though right?
