If only he had that pistol, then he wouldn't have been hit in the head and then stabbed repeatedly till his death by Hawaiians after his failed attempt to take the Hawaiian king hostage.

Clearly, we need stronger Hawaiian control laws.

It would be pretty damned sweet to own that.

Looks like it might still be functional.

A lot of people don't realize that a quality gun that is well cared for will work for *CENTURIES*.  I've personally fired guns that were well over 100 years old at the time.

I remember the Hawaii portion of this guy from from Discovery Atlas™

The Hawaiians were conveniently anticipating the arrival of their God after a particular annual ceremony when Cook just happen to sail upon the island.

He was welcomed as a deity; showered with women, treasure, exotic foodstuffs and supplies for his ship and eventually set sail to return with his spoils.

His ship encountered a bad storm only a day or two out which ultimately forced him to return to Hawaii.

The Hawaiians concluded that no god of theirs could possibly be bested by a mere storm so they killed him and his crew upon their return.

I was amazed and impressed at their rationality despite their initial faith in the matter.

A few years ago a set of pistols was sold at Christie's. They had been bought in France by Lafayette and given to Washington who latter returned to Lafayette. When he was touring the USA latter he gave the pistols to Andrew Jackson who gave them to Washington's family. They were next inherited by Robert E Lee. Last time I checked they set an auction record for firearms.

I have a Gewehr 88 that was obsolete before World War I that's in perfect working order.  I have a ton of stuff from WWII that not only works, they're actually really nice guns.  75-year-old guns and work like they were made yesterday.

You could always buy a reproduction, and shoot that.  Not that expensive.  Or build one like it.  You can get most of the parts for something like that from Track of the Wolf and Dixie Gun Works.

Just googled it. I made a mistake. While Lee and Washington was connected by marriage the pistols went back to Lafayette's family after Jackson. They sold for 500,000

This might have not happened had he died after eating poisonous pufferfish liver.  He ate some, felt the initial stages of poisoning, and then vomited everything up.  He recovered.

I think they should do a Predators film set back ~200 years ago.  That would be cool.

Yahoo news.
From Yahoo, the search engine,
with an article about a rare item,
that doesn't have a picture.
Kind of like how Yahoo stock
doesn't have value.

This is how you screw up a company.
Follow the yahoo path.

Also, Yahoo is a dumb name for anyone who wants to be taken seriously.

Yeah.

I'll pass.

Depends on the Hawaiian. If they are of the Waikiki type, dependent on tourism dollars, they smile and say "hello" to everyone, even the Jap tourists they despise. Not much deterrence there

However, if they are from Molokai, you can depend on them being big and mean, addressing everyone as "farking haoli" and offering to kick your ass. Those are the ones you want.
