Time to sound ignorant:

I thought you couldn't be the first person to touch the ball after a free throw miss.

/apparently I am learning something new today

If it were Shaq, you probably wouldn't be able to tell if the miss was intentional or not.

think it's fair game for anybody to grab it once it hits the rim.  You can't grab your own shot if it's an airball, though.

Yeah that's right, it just has to hit the rim so you can't bank it off the top of the backboard and basically pull an NBA Street self-alley-oop.

Before viewing I had assumed the refs let the shooter leave the line early, but now I see the defense was totally asleep

Yep.

As for why it's legal, the free throw shooter can't step past the free throw line until after the ball hits the rim.  Everyone else gets to move as soon as the shot is released.

He did the smart thing and didnt wait to take the shot - soon as the ball from the ref hits his hands he's in the shooting motion - he also gave it a pretty good fling instead of trying to leave a normal shot short on the rim.

All in all they would have been hard pressed to say he left early or not because the ball was at the rim so fast and the other team was probably waiting for that single/double dribble before shooting routine they've seen a million times.

Indeed.  It was a smart move on the shooters part.

The intentionally missed free throw is incredibly difficult to pull off, but at the same time, the ref would've been within his rights to award Amherst three foul shots.

So the number of foul shots is something arbitrary that the ref can just pull out of their asses?

A shooting foul (i.e. a foul committed against a player in the act of shooting) results in the same number of free throws as if that shot had been successful (i.e. 2 inside the arc, 3 outside), or, if the shot was successful, one (1) additional free throw. All other fouls, to my knowledge, result in 2 free throws.

The quote refers to the fact that the ref could have judged the fouled player to have been in the act of shooting (a 3-pointer), but chose not to, as it was pretty much 50-50.

That makes sense. I'm not sure why I even posted in the first place given how little I actually care about the this sport.

1) Did a bird get killed at 0:42?

2) If that's a game between the #2 and #3 ranked team, that crowd is incredibly small and unenthusiastic. Even for D3.
