Most of my ancestors were Hessian Jews. I have no idea if any came over a little earlier than most to be a part of that whole thing, but we were on the "wrong side" of WWI.

FYI on Paterson, NJ. It was once a honeymoon destination. It was good luck for couples to walk across the Paterson Falls bridge in some sort of ritual. No joke.

The actual story with the Hessians is that their boss, Frederick II of Hesse, was a boor and an idiot, who was selling off his people to finance his completely gaudy and tasteless lifestyle.  The English were in need of men for just about every war going at the time, and Frederick II was married to Princess Mary, daughter of King George II and aunt of King George III (until she ran away from him and he converted to Catholicism, but still).  So, since he was "family" of a sort and had troops that could be bought cheap, the English were paying him to send his guys to Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, Flanders, and America.

Besides all that, the units were basically draftees in the Hesse army - military service was compulsory and widespread, with something like 7% of the region under arms.  So these guys aren't mercenaries the way you think of professional soldiers-for-hire who join whatever army's going - these guys were mercenaries in that their boss was selling entire units of his army wholesale to the highest bidder, but usually to the family over in England.

I drive across that bridge every morning on my way to work.  It's one of the few exits from the state with no toll.

As far as how shiatty Trenton itself is...  There are FAR worse places (Newark and Camden, for example).  There are actually some parts of Trenton that are pretty nice.

I would like to throw in my good word for Button's Creperie at the Trenton Farmer's Market.  Which I think is technically in Ewing. That, and the Amish ice cream booth right next to it.

That place IS nice.  But very expensive.  It also sits on the Grounds for Sculpture, sort of an outdoor museam.  Very nice place.

That place IS nice.  But very expensive.  It also sits on the Grounds for Sculpture, sort of an outdoor museam.  Very nice place.

...in  Hamilton. Very different than Trenton, despite being right next to each other. You couldn't pay me enough to live in Trenton. Once upon a time I thought it might be cool to someday buy an old home in Cadwalader Park and rehab it, but that was 15-20 years ago, and even then it was a dodgy proposition. The city has gone way downhill from there.

CSB Time:

Saw Da Vinci's Notebook in Trenton once.  They were performing at a coffeehouse with a window that looked right out into the street.  Whenever people would walk by the windows, they would start shaking their asses for the folks out there.

At one point, one of the guys noticed two hotties walk by.  He stepped out real quick, and then 10 seconds later he was walking down the street on the other side of the window with a hottie on each arm.

They sang Jump In The Line complete with conga line, which also went out the door and onto the street outside.  Audience and all.

To top it all off, the local minor-league baseball game was letting out.  So while they were doing their butt dance to the passers-by, another guy decided to do his own butt dance for us,  FULL MOON STYLE.

That show will forever be known as THE BUTT SHOW.  The guys will never forget it.  Neither will I..
