ssteedman: South Africans are very jumpy about house burglaries, as a large percentage of them are violent and often lethal, in a way not seen in many other parts of the world.

Yeah, I've read some pretty damning things about South Africa and violent crime. I can't blame someone there for being on edge.
If I remember right, people were pretty upset with that World Cup soccer (football) thing being held there for that reason?

2013-02-14 07:04:16 AM
South African police says they're mystified about the burglary story, that's nothing they have speculated towards the press.

They have been there before because domestic disturbances, and now they're likely charging him with murder.

2013-02-14 07:05:00 AM

Smoking GNU: This happened in South Africa, where the usual standard for burglary in an occupied home is to tie the people up, panel-beat them for a while, terrorize them for a while further  to get any ad all valuables  and then proceed to rape all the females, shoot anyone who disagrees, and then beat toddlers over the head just for fun.

South africa is a farked up place to say the least. What happened here is a real tragedy and i feel for the family who lost a member, but burglary leads to vicious and violent murder in that country and  being in fear is entirely understandable. Mind you, switching on a light beforehand to actually SEE who it was would be a smart move before shooting, but who thinks clearly when they're scared out of their mind?

How about actual numbers on number of home invasions vs. home invasions that include rape, murder, etc?

Despite the fantasies of the "experts" here that believe SA to be a lawless wasteland, the police didn't wait all that long to decide this story was bullshiat and officialy charge him with murder.

2013-02-14 07:07:00 AM

MisterRonbo: Also, after that first muzzle flash, you can't see shiat. Plus if you're certain enough to put that first round in to the unknown person, you're going to keep shooting - why wouldn't you?  What downside is there to pumping too many rounds in to a (perceived) threat?

If this alleged incident is true, Pistorius failed 2/4 basic rules of firearm safety.

1. Guns are always loaded
2. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you have identified your target and are ready to put holes in it
4. Know your target and what is beyond it.

Tsar_Bomba1: jdamaral: So he shot her twice? Hm.

4 times.

Either she's a big biatch in real life or he's a great shot....or someone ain't telling the whole story.

BigBooper: My house has a hallway where I can put myself between all our bedrooms and the rest of the house. You better believe that the first thing I'm going to do in a home burglary situation is to move to a defensive position and scream in a very high pitched voice "Who's There! I have a gun!"
The wife will of course be calling 911. of course knowing her, As soon as she has contact with the police, she'll be grabbing her own piece.
Screw the stuff, I'm not moving away from where my family is. I like to think that I wouldn't shoot at movement, or without identifying who I'm shooting at, but who knows what you'll do when your adrenalin is pumping.

Food for thought but if there is someone in your house up to no good, and they do manage to scram when you call out that you have a gun, there's a good chance they might find an attorney and claim that you menaced them with a firearm.  Difficulty: the courts where you live.

Every bit of training I've ever had has always suggested that you use your firearm to disable a threat, not to threaten a threat.  This also goes for the common belief that if you rack a shotgun you're going to scare off a burglar.  9/10x it might scare him off.  In the case of burglar who has a piece and knows how to use it, you just told him where you are.

From what I've heard from 'professional's'...when non-professionals start shooting, they don't just pop one off, they'll shoot until it clicks empty.

ryarger: Despite the fantasies of the "experts" here that believe SA to be a lawless wasteland, the police didn't wait all that long to decide this story was bullshiat and officialy charge him with murder.

That's quite often the default position of police forces in self-defense cases outside the US, and in some jurisdictions inside the US.

Also, as far as the '"experts" here that believe SA to be a lawless wasteland', perhaps they've seen South Africa's homicide rate:  31.8 per 100,000.  For comparison, the homicide rate in the US is a very low 4.8 per 100,000.

Yeah, based on the homicide rate, I'd call it largely a lawless wasteland.  May not necessarily be true in the "nice areas" or Pretoria, but for most of the country it is.  It's got a homicide rate nearly 7 times higher than the US.

o5iiawah: This also goes for the common belief that if you rack a shotgun you're going to scare off a burglar.  9/10x it might scare him off.  In the case of burglar who has a piece and knows how to use it, you just told him where you are.

Assuming you aren't immediately visible, that's not actually true.  You've told him you are aware of his presence.  He's lost the element of stealth, and the element of surprise, and he's in territory that you likely know very well, well enough that you can walk around blindfolded, and that he doesn't know as well.  From behind which door did the sound come from?  The two on the left of the hall, or the two on the right?

Also, the "knows how to use it" proportion of burglars must be vanishingly small.  They won't get to practice too much:  They'll mostly either be too young to legally own a handgun, or they will be a felon.  That's going to limit their ability to actually practice.  People who aren't allowed to have guns have a hell of a time finding a place to work on their marksmanship skills without risking arrest.  Note that I'm not saying they can't get guns, just they won't be able to practice enough to "know how to use it".

swingerofbirches: I can't imagine how he'd feel. Would you want to kill yourself after something like that? It's horrifying for the girlfriend, but I can't imagine the state of mind he'd be in. It would be surreal.

There was a history of domestic violence. This was straight up murder. I'm not often one to jump to conclusions in criminal cases, but "home intruder defense" is just too far fetched. The guy lived in a secured complex with guards at the gate.

Smoking GNU: August11: I'm thinking cover-up. He shoots crazy girlfriend after she gets all slappy scratchy, then makes up the home invasion.

I'm a hunter, not a home defender. But I'm thinking if I ever raise my Mossberg at an invader, I can't picture pulling the trigger before at least a touch of dialog with the invader.

What is the possible scenario? Blood thirsty murder decides to rampage on this guy's house? Blam Blam Blam Blam? Phew. That was close! They're coming for my TV! Blam Blam Blam Blam. Phew. That was close!

Nope. This will be a murder trial.

You don't have a clue how it is in south africa, do you?

Yeah, obviously there's a higher chance of this kind of thing happening when people have such a strong need for guns to protect themselves against a high level of robbery, brutality, rape and murder - and all in their own homes!
Not saying it's impossible this guy deliberately did it and the police don't have reasons to be suspicious.
But equally it's an indictment of the police; the cops look bad if the rich and whites are routinely preyed on and lot's of 3rd world police solve a problem by locking up the victim.
