"On OkCupid, according to Malhotra, by far the biggest predictor of interest is relative age. Being within five years of a dating prospect's age doubles the likelihood that you'll have interest. Next comes shared religion, which predicts a 50 percent interest boost. Shared ethnicity increases interest by 16.6 percent. Education has a 10.6 percent effect. And shared political partisanship raises dating interest levels by 9.5 percent. "

So out of five variables on a real-world dating site, politics came in last.

Chances are if you are close in age and background you will have similar politics. Politics might be last because they are secondary to the other factors

When did it become acceptable to just straight out ask 'Who did you vote for'?

2013-02-14 08:31:10 AM
To be honest, I would have no interest in dating any woman dumb enough to vote republican in the last few elections.  Unless I were looking for a masochist GF I suppose....

So age > religion > ethnicity > education > political orientation in terms of predictors of interest?

Makes sense.

As the country increasingly polarizes into two "never the twain shall meet" political camps that last number might go up a mite I'm guessing.

I would never have sex with someone who favors taking away my right to choose.

Hmmm, a woman who consistently acts against her own best interest by willingly giving power to a man who will dominate and control her body, while treating her like a second class citizen?  It's not my thing, but I understand some people get off on that kind of thing.

2013-02-14 09:06:35 AM
I don't intentionally exclude anyone based on their political beliefs, however I was taken aback when I started sleeping with someone (like, a lot) then later found out she was going to protest outside a Planned Parenthood. I mean I knew she was Catholic and all, but I never imagined a woman who was that enthusiastic, and frankly a little kinky, in bed would be crazy level pro-lifer.

It's better than finding out later in bed when she leans over to your ear and whispers, "Shouldn't only white landowners have the right to vote?"

I don't care about other people's politics as long as the other person refrains from preaching their party's line I could still be in a relationship.

I went to Purdue and lived in fraternity, so I've hooked up Republican broads.  I never noticed the difference.

Unless this is about relationships and not sex.  Yeah, screw that.  I'm not actually conversing and hanging around with these people unless they provide drugs or sex.

FTFA: I was about 15 minutes into a date with a woman I met on OkCupid when she boasted that in 2008 she'd voted for John McCain. I hadn't asked. She brought it up. She wanted me to know it was a badge of honor for her.

This is the problem right here. Not necessarily who she voted for, but that she felt she needed to boast about it. I don't go around telling strangers who I voted for or my core political beliefs. That's just asking for trouble. Then again, I voted for Obama & I live in Texas. When it finally comes out, it rarely goes well.

And there was that one time I was at a bar & a man who was being friendly asked who I voted for. I answered honestly & he literally turned his back on me & walked away. I no longer existed to him. I tried to explain that Republicans were not very friendly towards women, but looking back, I have no idea why I felt the need to explain myself because fark that guy in his hateful redneck ass.

I dated a conservative girl once... it was going fine and then started the Jesus/Church/Lord and Savior stuff... Just about constantly. Especially once I explained that I am atheist. Then it was her trying to convert me. Got to be too much to put up with pretty quick.

You certainly implied it. You basically state that someone who doesn't share your politics is "stupid" and that stupid equates to ugly. So, do you think someone could have different opinions than yours and still be smart and therefore attractive?

2013-02-14 10:12:05 AM
It's almost like people are looking for a relationship where they can discuss things like current events and US politics without it devolving into a shouting match.

Was in Germany in December, hanging out with a co-worker at a bar.  Considered hitting on her despite her being 10 years younger and having a case of Valley Girl-itis, then she swung the conversation to politics and railed against Obama and talked about how great Romney was.

Needless to say, 30 min later I was flipping through the German TV channels looking for infomercial porn.

There are reasonable disagreements between rational adults, and then there Republicans and Democrats.

I never implied that. Just because all republicans are stupid it doesn't mean all stupid people are republicans.

And sure, someone could have different opinions than me and still be smart and attractive.

But not if they vote Republican. Huge red flag.

How exactly do Carville and Matalin do it then?  I guess when politics is your job, there is no way in hell you want to take it home from the office.

//if I was Carville, I would be VAWA's #1 enemy, like, totally assuming it like passed, man.

I would think opposing political affiliation would be a boon.  I can see the pluss of having a higher than likely chance of getting into an arguement over something that is silly (politics)... sounds perfect for a makeup coupling.

2013-02-14 10:15:24 AM
No surprise.

The same thing happens when you meet someone attractive and then find out their interests suck.

I'm with someone anyway, but if I were single, I'd find it hard to date. As I get older, I get pickier and more easily annoyed. "I voted for Romney" would be an easy NOPE. Don't share my values, wouldn't trust you to help raise our kids right. No thanks.

Yeah, I couldn't date someone who was far left uber liberal or someone who was far right uber conservative. I've had both types of men try and I just couldn't be in a relationship with anyone who showed those levels of extremism. If they're extreme in that facet, they're extreme in other facets as well.

Give me a good middle man.

In my college days, back in the 80's, I briefly experimented with banging a conservative chick. It was just a phase; there are a lot more guys who try it once or twice than you would imagine.

I know.  Nobody uses "whom" anymore!

But seriously, it's not a job interview.  I think it is a legitimate question when trying to get to know someone for dating.  I'd also ask about smoking, religion, children, job, hobbies, education

So, if I were to introduce you to a number of young, attractive women working as attorneys and physicians who voted Republican (and that wouldn't be difficult), you would dismiss them as too stupid to bother with?

Yeah, when the girl I was interested in told me she thought Sarah Palin was smart, I realized it was not meant to be. Now she has three kids from three different fathers, one of whom left her while she was pregnant.

That line didn't make the cut.  They went with "I haven't been farked like that since grade school" because somehow "I want to have your abortion" was worse.
