It's always the way, these people learn that they've been supporting folly and actively sabotaging Western society and legal systems but are too scared of all the vested interests to say anything. once their free (and inconsequential) they get brave and principled. Obama will be the same once he's out of office I'll bet.

Snark noted. That said, I feel obligated to point out that the war on drugs is a major front in the war on poverty. The artificially high cost of drugs is keeping millions of people in poverty. Their money is being siphoned off by gangsters, both of the drug dealer variety and the law enforcement variety.  Their men (and less often women) are being removed from society in their teens and twenties, being put in prisons or graves. Their children are being shot. Their brothers are struggling with addictions that they can't get help for. Their sisters are dying of overdoses due to questionable doses and purity of the drugs. They are dying of infections from dirty needles. Their schools spend more money on security than on education. Their teachers spend too much time dealing with underfed, unloved, filthy children whose parents--if they're lucky enough to have two--are imprisoned, stoned, or committing crimes. Government resources that should be spent making them productive citizens are instead paying for cops and prisons. Ending the war on drugs would be a major victory in the war on poverty.

This.
When caught in a war you want to stop you can't start shooting the generals who finally come to your side.
For whatever personal reason that he's made this choice, He's someone that's seen the error of his ways, and  you use his conversion to strengthen the argument against this war.

Denver City Council to debate implementing marijuana laws

Councilman Chris Herndon said voters in his district said they chose to legalize pot because they were tired of seeing young people go to jail for possessing small amounts.

But they also told him, "Don't you dare put a commercial establishment in my community," Herndon said in the council committee meeting.

Denver City Council to vote in April whether to opt out on marijuana

In 2012 there were $130 million in gross sales of medical marijuana that generated $4.6 million in sales tax revenue for Denver, up from $1.8 million in 2010.

But marijuana-related crime also has increased, said Denver Police Chief Robert White, speaking Monday to the council committee.

"It should be noted that our biggest challenge in terms of marijuana are burglaries," White said.

In 2009, there were 10 burglaries in which marijuana was on the premises at the time of the crime. In 2012, there were 102 marijuana-related burglaries, White said. An estimated 60 percent of those burglaries were of residences, said Sgt. Andrew Howard of the police department's marijuana task force.

When I was young, I discovered that the best way to learn tolerance was to have a gay friend, a black friend, whatever. Personal experience can teach you the error of your ways.

More than 15 years ago, McDonald's son Bennet Black was riding a "go-ped" in the intersection of Guadalupe and Val Vista in Gilbert. He was hit by a car traveling 45 miles-per-hour and suffered massive brain damage.A year later, he developed epilepsy. Epilepsy medication saved his life, but left Bennet so nauseous he would be unable to eat for days at a time."I was just trying to figure out how on earth to work with these new disabilities," Black said."It is a constant battle for life," said McDonald. "And the only thing that helps with the nausea is marijuana."

This wasn't a mere "difference of opinion", this guy has done harm.  He has advocated for policies, put people in jail, and ruined lives.  I don't think a mere "my bad" is sufficient.

And I'll go you one further.  Dude had his change of heart because of personal interests (his son), so there is a fair amount of self interest here.  Is this guy advocating for change?  Is he calling his contacts and helping the cause?  If his son were cured tomorrow, would he continue to support medical marijuana or would he go back to his old views?

I'll stick with "opportunistic asshole".
