"Strawberry-flavored death slot". I like it.

ABC is the new fox, they got rid of Better off Ted, then Don't trust the b*tch, and now Happy Endings. All gone so it could make way for some stupid reality TV show.

Don't talk to me about Fox.  I'm mad at them for cancelling "Ben and Kate".

Does this mean the black guy will go back to New Girl?  Also, Ben & Kate is cancelled?

Well it never actually went to Sundays exclusively.  ABC was airing new episodes on both Sunday and Tuesday nights, which doesn't really make much sense either.

Can someone explain to me why this show had any defenders? The times I tried watching I found myself saying, "Shut up...shut up...SHUT. UP." at the screen.

The Happy Endings thing sucks, but I was not prepared to deal with the Ben and Kate news...

I really think that ABC wants this show to work.  If they wanted to cancel it, they could have just pulled it like they did with Don't Trust the B, but they've been trying to find an audience for it and just failing at every turn.  This is just the classic "We'll throw it on Friday and if it can keep its previous audience we might be able to keep it around."  I don't really blame ABC.  They gave the show 7 months airing after Modern Family and it got okay ratings, but when they moved it away from that security blanket it tanked.  Good shows do that sometimes.

Agreed. I tried to watch a couple of times, mostly because the actresses are pretty and I'm too lazy to press the button on the remote. After a few seconds of the frantic dialogue and the intense delivery I couldn't take any more.

Yep, sure can... it was funny. Not ground-breaking, kind of goofy, had some witty and out-of-left-field dialogue.

I understand ABC's reasoning for why they moved it to Tuesday in the first place--they wanted Wednesday's to have all "family" comedies. But it's still stupid. Happy Endings was thriving on Wednesday and not once have I ever seen a TV-viewer disgruntled because a network's primetime block wasn't completely "genre coordinated" like a prom night outfit. But at least they now have four "family" comedies, even though that alien show taking its place looks dreadful from the few episodes I've seen.

So they move it to Tuesday in direct competition with a show on FOX that's  exactly like itbut with the benefit of having a couple of years to build up an audience at that time. We all knew network executives weren't good for creative direction. They obviously don't know anything about scheduling. So what good are they?

Honestly I'm actually find it kind of weird that the night something airs on makes that much difference anymore. Do most people still watch things when they actually air? The program I can think of that I typically do that with is The Walking Dead, and even then I let the DVR build up a good fifteen minutes so I can skip commercials. They could air Happy Endings at 3am on a Tuesday and I'd still be watching it the same way.

Me too. But we're talking about an industry that still treats the internet like it's full of dragons and sirens and if they venture out too deep they'll fall over. So we have to play by antiquated rules.

Put your hands together...

Anyway, I used to really like this show but there's been a couple of unwatchable episodes this season.  Not quite sure why.  It was good for a year or two but now seems to have veered off for a long drive through Caricature County with a week's stay in Catchphraseburg.

/which is exactly how Dave would put it.

It's a fun show, but I've always had the impression the cast is enjoying things a touch more than I was.  A strange thing to say because I've really liked it.

I only tried it the once.

And for those who will ask why I bothered looking in the thread, because I knew there would be pics of the Cuthbert. Which is the only reason I tuned in that one time to begin with.

They're still out there. My wife will set up a recording for a show then watch it when it airs anyway and leave the recording on the DVR. I think she likes the pace of a show with commercials, where she can do something with her iPad during all the commercial breaks and get back to the show when it comes back. Also, it means she doesn't have to work the "skip" button to get back to the show.

According to Nielsen, 87.2% of broadcast television is watched live (though I believe this includes commercial buffering like you mentioned), 5.5% is watched on DVR on the same day, and 6.1% is watched on DVR within a week.

For cable, the numbers are 93.3% live, 3.4% same day, and 2.8% within a week.

Mixed feelings on Ben & Kate. Ben's just plain annoying and his teeth is distracting. I keep waiting for him to dam a stream.

If you described Happy Endings to me and I'd never seen it, I'd probably tell you I'd never watch it.

However, despite its overworn, cliche premise (a group of friends living in a big city and having wacky hijinks),  it's consistently one the funniest show on TV. The Christmas episode almost killed me.

And the girls are hot.

I had the exact same reaction when I read an article about it prior to its premier. That's what great writing and cast chemistry will do for you. Every single cast member looks like they're having a blast acting like jackasses with each other. And it's great.

And even though, had he stayed on "New Girl," he would still be on TV, I think Damon Wayans, Jr. did a great job exhibiting his comedic chops on "Happy Endings." It would've sucked if his talent got lost in the background of what is actually the Zooey Deschanel Show.

I love this show. I'll be sad if they cut it. Being set in Chicago makes it even better.

And I would totally marry Penny.

And I would stop you, for your own good.

One of the things I've been wondering these past few episodes is how any man could  possiblywant to marry Penny. She's hot but you know that after the honeymoon is over it'll be a matter of months before she drives you to death by your own hand.

At least Jane found a sub who's eager to take on her "foibles."

I would gladly take Penny's semi-crazy antics over Jane's intense neuroses. She's too high maintenance for me. Plus, I dig the brunettes.

The show has defenders because some of us think it's funny. I think it's one of the funniest shows on network TV. Your mileage obviously varies. I think Modern Family is completely unwatchable and can't understand its popularity at all.  Yet, if someone tells me Modern Family is their favorite show, I don't wonder what in the world is wrong with them. I accept that they like something I don't.

I actually like both shows.

Did I just blow your mind?

(To be fair, I like HE more, mostly because Max is a better, less stereotypical representation of homosexuals on TV than Cam and Mitch on MF).

I like both too. Only I find MF harder to watch because they try to condense so much into their comedy. That and because about half the characters are starting to get very annoying. We get it, you have an accent/are gay/are gay/are goofy/act like an old man even though you're 12/are turning into a know-it-all biatch in training. Dial it back a notch.

The show is being killed off because it burned too bright, too quickly.  I don't mean that in the sense of too much early success.  Rather, its intense dialogue and frenetic pacing was fresh and interesting for the first season, but by the middle of season 2, I, and many other people I know, began to find it tiring at best, and grating at worst.  It's all just, too much now.

The wedding convention episode was a winner in my book. Jane's bait-and-switch Trojan Horse joke felt like something right out of season 5 of The Simpsons.

Yep, "New Girl" is an ensemble show at this point.

And this blows, "Happy Endings" is hysterical.  Alas.
