My Droid says it is not the smartphone you are looking for....

....and told me to wave my hand at you dismissively.

Good. The more the merrier. There're also more transistors in the world than humans. There are more packing peanuts and cardboard boxes than humans.

Things that make our lives better should be encouraged.

August 30th:  The day people still referencing the Terminator franchise to describe technological advancements become self-aware.

Something tells me, someone has already stopped that day from happening.

Thankfully, the same logic can be applied to bacons. :-)

well, my birthday is the 29th, so that's totally been the case for me for, like, nearly 2 decades now.

how did this not happen years ago? i've bought maybe 5-6 cell phones myself. we need a re-count. and can we have a take-away option, like for people in supermarkets that can't even food shop without a constant line of chatter going on to help them make their selections? it's pathetic.

More importantly, people are also likely outnumbered by the number of transformers.

Based on what I see, Skynet will be too busy taking pictures of food and posting it on Facebook to be a real threat.

i bought plenty of oatmeal  and downloaded videos and pictures of cats to keep me busy.  during the global internet outage, when lolcats become worth their weight in gold

Hm.  There are 4 people in my house (two are in diapers so do they really count?) and 6 mobile internet devices in actual operation (2 work phones, 2 personal phones, an Ipad, and an ipod touch).  I guess we are doing our part.  I expect as the small people become more self aware that number is only going up.

How is that number even possible? Is that the number manufactured or the number in actual use? I have 2 phones, one for work, one for personal use. My wife has 2 phones and a tablet. I get that, but I don't think the same applies in, say, to the 70% of China who are still dirt-poor farmers.

What am I missing?

OMG!! An inanimate object outnumbers people!!! It is almost like people prefer to own different electronic devices, each to suit the specific need for the device.

And driving while on the cell increases your likelihood of having an accident (injurious and/or fatal). Folks should have to go through a psychological and criminal background check before being allowed to purchase a cell phone if they have a drivers license.

Actually, as someone that lives in China, I think I can clear up a minor error that you are making.

Yes, they may be poor, but they do have phones.  The waiters and waitresses and farmers and haircut guys don't have computers or laptops, but they do have smartphones, and they spend every spare minute they have using them.

For what it's worth...
I have 2 phones, wife has two phones + iPad, daughter has a phone, live-in nanny has a phone.  So, this particular household in China is right up there with the prediction.

And porn and pornographic fan fiction.  I'm guessing Skynet hasn't been able to attack us yet due to the massive amount of squicky furry stuff.

You're apparently aware of it, but not connecting the dots.

The WEST has been flush with devices, but not everyone else. It's getting there.

I understand that due to poor infrastructure, large portions of Africa and India people have cheap cellphones rather than landlines

This morning my Google Now told me how long my commute was to work. Right before I leave today it will tell me how long it is to the bar that I go to on a certain day.

It's already begun.

Colombia is chock full of people who do not have landlines, but just cell phones, and even poor people have blackberries, low end droids, and 2 seasons ago iphone.

Its cheaper, easier, and more practical to distribute hand held device's in developing areas than laptops and desktops.

technology is a lot like guns, there's a ton of them, but ownership is more concentrated than you think

I am living in China right now too.
I have 5 or 6 devices, my secretary carries 2 phones (one with two sim cards) and a notebook, all members of my staff have at least 3 devices, and the room Im sitting in has another 2 dozen internet enabled devices. My street has 6 IP cams watching the streets. A short walk from here is the subway, most riders are carrying smart phones.

I visited Inner Mongolia for the spring festival (chinese new year) last week and everyone in that household had a smart phone, the TV was internet enabled... and that was in what is generally considered a peasant farmer household (no hot running water etc...)

The perception of China being portrayed in my home town (Canada) is wildly inaccurate.

// It is a CRAPLOAD cheaper to run internet enabled devices here
/ QQ+RenRen+Baidu = Modern Chinese lifestyle

On the other hand, there are plenty of people like me who have no reason to own a mobile internet device and enjoy our cheap landlines and DSL service.
