Wrong, every airline that is left is part shiatty and you can't avoid any of them because there are, what, 4? 4 farking major airlines left? Good job with the de-regulation, assholes.

I have no problems with Southwest or Frontier. They're not perfect, but they're both a big improvement over American or US Air. Hell, even Delta is better than those two.

LOVED Southwest in the day, but unfortunately they are becoming just like the rest. Never flown Frontier,

I look forward to American jacking the prices at DFW even more through the roof. Of course they can and will because they already pretty much have a monopoly out of DFW. I used to be against the repeal of the Wright Amendment because flying Southwest out of Love sucks. However if they had more non-stop flight to places I would actually want to go, I would. Of course they way Southwest is set up, I'm not sure it would matter even if it was repealed

Does this mean American will become part of the Star Alliance? Cos that would be badass - interchangeable points/miles/segments with United, US Airways, and now American.

2013-02-13 10:19:37 PM
Affiliation with Oneworld Alliance. The merged airline will jilt Star Alliance, a popular global airlines alliance to which US Airways and United belong. That would wipe out the US Airways-United code-share agreement familiar to Detroit travelers. Instead, the new merged airline would be part of Oneworld alliance, a smaller alliance to which American belongs.

Bastards.

The best airlines I've flown have been nationalized or at least a public/private partnership, yet we have deregulation and crappy airlines.

Flew AA last year to Hawaii from Vancouver BC

The emailed itinerary showed two flight numbers. Got to the airport and got three boarding tickets.

WTF?

First one was a boarding pass from Vancouver to San Fransisco, then a boarding pass to LA, then a farking RE-BOARDING pass to a different airplane to Hawaii with the same flight number as the one from San Fransisco to LA.

14 hours for which a direct flight would have taken 5 hours. And the luggage made a flight from San Fransisco to Hawaii and was in holding waiting for us.

Never EVER will fly AA again.

I thought that analysts said this would not happen because American Airlines just rolled out new livery.

Yay less choice and less competition.

No high speed rail, no competing airlines, you'll sit in your 2hr queue for check in, pay $30 for carry on bags and have every crevice meticulously groped and like it. And pay for the privilege.

Funny that they "de-regulated" except for the bit about letting foreign carriers fly routes inside the US.....

I don't get the hate for US Air. I almost think it is popular to hate on them.

I have flown over 100k miles with them over the past 2 years, I have experienced no non-weather related delays, excellent in-cabin service and had some pretty decent meals in first class with them. My luggage has always arrived with me, and they have even gone above and beyond the call of duty when I had to bring home extra luggage from a trip overseas and was a few miles short of my gold upgrade.

United on the other hand can't get me from one side of the country to the other without a delay or losing my luggage. Even then though I don't hate United. shiat happens.

I seriously think most of the people who dislike airlines are infrequent travelers and are confused with boarding zones or are out for the cheapest ticket all while expecting first class service and direct flights. Kind of like Leftcoast_Eh.

Ditto to a tee. Back in the day, when I was in NC, US airways has a huge presence there and they were above average for an American flight operator. Of course, I will still take Jetblue any day, provided that the price isn't too high. United can EABOD though

Flying commercial sucks ass.  I highly recommend private charters out of regional hubs.  Especially when someone else is paying for it.  And with the coming fare hikes, it's looking like the better choice all the time.

This should be fun to watch. Doug Parker hasn't been able to get the two pilots unions to agree from the last merger in 2005. Adding South to East and West should fix everything. IIRC, the two flight attendant groups over at US just recently combined their roster, so look for a repeat on all that as well.

There are a lot of things that could go right, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Remember how AA was renewing the fleet, and all of the planes were going to come with PTV? Don't expect that to continue. Instead, you'll be able to look at the credit card advertisement on the back of the tray table for your flight.

AAdvantage, which is arguably the best FF program out there, will likely be gutted. Fares will increase, bases will close, a lot of people will end up out of work.

It was repealed a few years ago.

In Nov 2014 all flight restrictions are lifted on Love Field.

Still restrictions on number of terminals.

AFAIK BA, Virgin etc have TV in all seats except for very short haul flights because not only is it a good selling point but it saves them money on flight attendants. Self Loading Freight who are watching TV need far less service than bored ones sitting there calling for a glass of water every five minutes. I think BA cut three FA's from a typical 747 flight and that adds up over the years.

More like Tom Horton was dragged from his office screaming and clawing to stay.

He was able to convince a majority of the board to vote 'no' on the merger, but the lawyer representing the creditors told them it didn't matter as he would ask the judge to remove the board for failing to follow thier fiduciary responsibilities and appoint new board members.

This will be a Harvard case study on how to take your company into bankruptcy to dump pensions and union contracts and loose control.

Parker is a genius. Although this is try #3.

Horton got hoodwinked by a guy who used to work for him. Hahahahahaha!

Yep, that is what I am afraid of as well, only a matter of time. I just hope Parker doesn't gut the good things AA had going for it. I mean WTF, US Air doesn't even have a mobile app!

That is still happening.  That 737 order was firmed up in January along with a few new 773 and a mix of 788 and 789.  The first 737 with AVOD should be delivered in Q4 and the A319 and A321 deliveries start this summer.  The current 737 deliveries were from an older order and are without AVOD.  AA still has 150+ MD-83 that need to be retired yesterday.  There is not much overlap on the AA/US route network, so initially, there won't be many route cuts unless the DOJ forces them to divest slot holdings at LGA or DCA.

Charlotte and Philly both give AA something it didn't have before.  Charlotte gives it a SE connecting hub to compete against Delta and Philly gives them a NE connecting hub for all non-NY traffic.  PHX is likely to get bent over.

Oh, I'm sure they'll keep buying the planes (though DP could always cancel the order and pay the penalty). What I'm imagining is going to happen though is they'll cancel the AVOD and Main Cabin Extra seat installations, along with installing the tray table ads and plastic cups for your Boone's Farm in First.

FWIW,

I fly.  A LOT.  Did 85K miles just last year.

1.  As you all know.  AMERICAN IS THE FARKING WORST.

2.  United really is not that bad.  This all started ten years ago when continental really improved it's service.  Then they merged and the continental culture is infecting United more than vice-versa.  The service is really not that bad any more, and still at the decent prices.

I started flying a lot more 3 years ago, and I prefer United out of all the carriers in the US.  This is partially because they are star-alliance, and partly because American sucks so badly in comparison.
