Oh look, it's this story again. De Botton is an idiot and definitely does not speak for atheists in general. I don't know any atheists who agree with his ideas about trying to add more ritualism to atheism (same guy proposed atheist churches.).

But don't let that get in the way of yet another "Atheism is a Religion" "NO it isn't!" "YOUR A IDIOT!" "NO YUO!!!" thread. ;)

Are you bothered by the negative reviews you've received?

Have you not seen people quoting me in the Politics tab?

I wish we'd have a strong return to animism. It might help in our stewardship of this planet.

AverageAmericanGuy: animism

I worship animals daily, and have high holy mass once a week at least.

//Nothing beats a bacon double cheeseburger, except 2 of em.

I have a very short book on how to be an atheist:

Step 1:  Do not believe in a supernatural 'higher power'

Step 2: See step 1

That's it.  Now STFU creepy bald guy.

What is with all these people trying to religify the lack of a religion?

Oh ... he's selling a book. Move along. Nothing to see here.

Damn - it's about time we had a good argument about what atheism is!

Atheism =  fark you.  I know whether I've done right or wrong (though some times it takes a while to figure out).  I don't need you to tell me.  My way of living:  If I can go to sleep at night without wondering "Did I fark that guy today?" I'm ok.

/Live with myself because I don't like the alternative.
//Live with other people because I choose to.

Atheism is a religion just like:

Bald is a hairstyle.
"Off" is a TV channel.
Clear is a color.

Give me some more.  I'm collecting 'em.

Seems like a pompous, self-important twatwaffle.

Especially when the article doesn't list these virtues.

He'd probably be better off calling them secular virtues if someone doesn't need to be an atheist to be virtuous.

I see right and wrong as absolutes. However my right and wrong come from a logical and defensible set of beliefs based in rational self interest. (As opposed to a mishmosh of conflicting documents written by bronze age nomads, or arbitrary "virtues"...) The most central of those beliefs is that you have the inalienable right to your life, your liberty and your property and that no one may take any of them from you without your express permission. It's rational self interest because in order to expect those rights, I have to respect them for others.

Theft is wrong because it violates your right to your property. Murder is wrong because it violates your right to your life. I don't need religion, some self important twits list of virtues, or a voice from a burning bush to arrive at that conclusion....

/Yea, I know - rational post

Need to buy the book. HIS BOOK!

Feeling Good/Bad about your actions is very subjective.

Doing Good/Evil is very objective.  No religion needed.

Religion doesn't have a monopoly on virtue? Wow, there's a shocker...

...in the early 1700's, maybe. But you know, it's 2013 and this kind of thing isn't news to anyone capable of reading a book.

Farking Canuck: What is with all these people trying to religify the lack of a religion?

Atheism is the lack of belief in a deity and there are several religions that are atheistic.

For example, Jainism, which focuses on treating others well vs worshiping any sort of deity.

// So this guy is just trying to create/promote another atheistic religion in order to sell books. Just go with Buddhism or Taoism or Jainism or any one of the other spiritual/meditative/peaceful religions that don't worship a deity.

It doesn't work if your expectation of how you wish to be treated is significantly worse than how others wish to be treated.

The golden rule is really hard to live by when you're dealing with: a) dumb shiats b) asshats and c) bad drivers (typically falls under categories a and/or b)

e.g.: "goddamnitsomuch farking turn already!!!" <lays on the horn at this point>
Although if I did what they did, I'd expect them to do the same to me so... bad example.

I realized I was a little off specifying 'religion' but I thought it worked better with my invented word "religify".

Since it is actually a violation of one of the 10 commandments (i.e. the big ones) you'd think atheists would be the only ones doing it.

I like the term.

And, as an agnostic/atheist, I am annoyed by efforts to codify it with rituals. The whole point of not being religious is that you don't have to worry about a bunch of rituals.
