I don't always f*ck over the middle class, but when I do....I drink spring water!  stay thirsty my friends.

he is...the most boring man in the Republican party!

Eh, who cares? In a few months they'll jump on the Ted Cruz bandwagon until they realize he's batshiat insane. Then it'll be on to the next non-white guy they'll all pretend to think highly of. By the time '16 election season rolls around they'll nominate another stuffy, rich, old white guy

Now that would be an epic contest.

I think Trump should run the pageant.

so sad that Salon.com isn't going to support Rubio.  That is a big surprise.

The contrarian in me wanted to minimize Rubio's sad grope for water.

I'm struggling really hard here to think of a stupider story than Marco Rubio took a drink of water during his speech.Shiat, I've given talks to groups of scientists taking pauses to drink my beer.

Yes, that's very similar to giving the official response to the SOTU on live TV.

Rubio mocking himself was actually the best thing he could have done.  He's got to admit that things went wrong, and he did.  Making light of it himself makes it much easier to get past, reducing the value in mocking.

Whoever told him to do that is smart.

At least he was looking at the correct camera.

Anyone who takes a sip of water during a prolonged period of speaking in a hot room full of bright lights is clearly not qualified to run for president maybe at some point in the future. I'm glad we got that all cleared up!

Are the people in the picture fading away? Did Rubio have to come back in time to run for President to make sure his parents get together?

I wonder how many teabaggers accidentally watched Rubio instead of Paul?

Or how many "moderates" watched Paul by mistake?

News flash: if you have to have two seperate responses to the sotu then your party is screwed. Don't worry repubs, your suffering won't be without purpose. If you consider amusing liberals a purpose.

It's not so much the drinking water as it is the awkward lunge for it in the middle of the sweaty, twitching self destruction of his political career.  He made even Bachmann look good by comparison.

2013-02-13 04:28:20 PM
My only real critique of the last few Republican rebuttals:

The rebuttal is hard. Not only because it is done immediately after the pomp and circumstance of the State of the Union. Not only because you're following a man charismatic enough to be voted president.

But it's incredibly hard because it is by necessity written well before the speech it is supposed to 'rebut'. That leaves you with two things to focus on - selling a vision and style. Worse, you're hamstrung in selling a vision because you're ostensibly speaking for a party and not just yourself.

That leaves you with style as the one thing you have to nail if you want your speech to do anything for yourself or your party.

And that is where Jindal, Ryan, and Rubio all fell short. That is why the water thing 'stuck'. Because almost by default the content of the speech is designed by circumstance to be forgettable, base-rallying talking points. Your job is to arrange and sell them in a convincing manner. That's why the awkward pauses, shuffles, gulps of water and other non-sense has so much sticking power.

2013-02-13 04:28:44 PM
Wasn't Jindal the "savior of the party" after the last SOTU?

I think what the case was is that the rebuttal was already pretty terrible and uninspiring. He looked very unconfident and reminded me of when I tried to half-ass speeches in college.

The frantic grab for the bottle of water was just icing on the cake by that point.

Oh it's not completely without purpose.  The idea was to cast Rubio as a moderate, even though he's also a tea bagger.

Maybe a motionless face shot on someone whose charged with just repeating old party talking points isn't the best way to introduce fresh new party voices. It's basically designed so the content of what they say is meaningless and we pick apart their presentation instead.

Nah, just kidding. Keep on truckin' guys!

I was actually pleased and gratified that Rubio did take a sip of water.  It helped to accomplish something (although for a short time) that I wanted him to do after the first two minutes of his speech:  STFU!!!!

yeah it was a bad performance.  I don't think he was "unconfident" in the message vs. the speaking to a camera for 30 minutes.

But we like our politicians to be good performers, the message doesn't matter anymore, so he won't do well.

Yep, nothing will court the Latino vote in places like Texas, Arizona, Nevada, and California any better than putting a Cuban-American on the GOP ticket.

They all look alike anyways right?

/wonders if this is actually the GOP rationale?

I read somewhere that he was actually drinking Liberal Socialist Dim tears, apparently harvested into that bottle fresh from the eyes of Obama during his second presidential acceptance speech.

what he did which I haven't heard from any "talking points" is directly challenge 0bama's false narrative (just because you don't want over regulation in the name of global warming, does not mean that you want to pollute the water and feed mercury to kids).

Again, Rubio at least tried to deal with that problem superficially. In his SOTU rebuttal, he told a story of how government helped his family, with college loans in his own youth and with Medicare for his parents.

So Rubio is a democrat, in favor of big government??
LOLOLOLOLOL

When is he switching parties to get ready for the DEM primaries in 2016??

The message sucked too.

I would've been shocked if he managed to stick in even more cheesy cliches than he already did in his rebuttal.

This part really stuck out to me:

"The Housing market was caused by bad government policy"

No shiat Sherlock, your own party drafted and passed the legislation that allowed the banks to make those risky loans in the first place!!!

"But...but...Clinton"

During a time when the GOP had a majority in both Houses.

It's time the GOP owned up to its own fark ups instead of trying to change history.

Like I said above - that's a speech designed to be near meaningless platitudes because of the circumstances it's given under.

Style is about all anyone remembers from ANY SOTU rebuttal by design.

I loved this part too:

They did ads with this cheesy crap in Florida back in the election and it didn't work, why would they do it again now?

When Rubio went on The Daily Show and made a complete fool of himself, in spite of a more than fair hearing from Stewart, it was clear this guy is incapable of actually being the great hope for the GOP. Sorry guys, try again.

By saying that a desire to prevent companies from polluting the air and water is 'overregulating in the name of global warming' would suggest otherwise.
