Sue Perkins?! How about no.

How about Emily Blunt?

I don't really get the insistence to rule63 characters rather than create new ones.

Oh, and Linda Hunt would work - but it bucks the trend of going younger.

vygramul: Linda Hunt

She is 4'9" tall and American.  I don't see it.  She couldn't even reach the controls of the Tardis.

I don't mind a female timelord at all.  I just don't think it should be The Doctor.

Wouldn't really be bothered by a female Doctor Who, but a dropping a comedian in that role just seems like they're trying too hard.

Aside from that, if I had a say in who the next Doctor should be, I'd pick James "Gaius Fracking Baltar" Callis.

2013-02-13 12:48:24 PM
Idris Elba

Sadly, Benedict Cumberbatch's cache is getting too big.  He is becoming too well known as Sherlock, and the Star Trek movie would pretty much destroy him as the Doctor.  A few years ago he would have been the perfect pick.

Yes, that would definitely work.  I could see him being really good.

(People have been talking about a female Doctor since at least the early 1980s, that I know of.  It could work, but it would be a difficult role to cast.  Sue Perkins probably isn't right for the role.  She has a sort of "cross between Matt Smith and David Tennant, but female" type of style, which makes her seem obvious, but that's exactly why she shouldn't take the role, IMO.)

Trying too hard? Just wait until they give her a lesbian love interest.

Hey, it's Doctor Who, not Doctor Hooha.

/Wouldn't really mind a female Doctor, as long as the writing is good.

I'd go with James Nesbitt.  I think it's time to go a bit older for the next Doctor instead of younger again.  I also think he could get back to the "crazy" of Eccleston instead of the "quirky" of the last two Doctors.

the only time dr who was good was when it was eccelston. all others have been poo. this chick will also be poo. probably. i think its just the poopy writers

regeneration has always been a time of "stress" for viewers. Sometimes we get a winner, sometimes we get davison/colin baker/mccoy. (dont get me wrong, I am a fan, I watched those episodes. but they were the worst doctors ever.)

A female dr? no problem. Been thinking about that option as long as I can remember. The problem is not that he would be she, it is that she might be just another bad dr.
Some of the obvious awesomeness with a female dr are as simple as people assuming that her male companion was the one in charge.
The whole "she is the weaker/inferior" member of the team could lead to some fun fun fun.

The "THE DOCTOR IS A MAN" people would get over it if the stories were good/great.
Those that wont get over it, wel, they never understood dr who at all.

Dr Who has always been about exploration. Gender change would just be yet another realm to explore.
Plus, where in the rules has it EVER said that the Dr was originally a male? We have not seen all of his/her rejuvenations.

Actually, we have. IIRC, they've specifically said Smith is the 11th Doctor. There have been 11 Doctors. We've seen 'em all.

Anyway, a female Doctor? Well, I wouldn't mind seeing the companion be the mostestest specialest importantest boy in all the universe for a couple seasons. It would be be something to break the monotony.

and the time lords have never lied ... lol
there were also rules about the fixed number of times a time lord could regenerate.

you mean a 4th dr who movie?
there have already been 3 movies

wait, that means that more that 12 people have played the dr (including peter cushing)
and we should include rowan atkinson, right?

otherwise, why are we including paul mcgann but not the others? he was just a bad one off mmade for tv movie ...

I don't think Sue Perkins would be the best for the role, but I hope they'll do a female doctor at some point. I mean, it's been a canon possibility since the 80s.

FirstNationalBastard: Anyway, a female Doctor? Well, I wouldn't mind seeing the companion be the mostestest specialest importantest boy in all the universe for a couple seasons. It would be be something to break the monotony.

The problem with Moffat writing a female doctor is exactly this. It would have been the issue with RTD too. Basically, in lieu of a Super Special Mary Sue companion, I'm concerned that she'd be the Super Special Mary Sue Doctor (And Also Suddenly Sexual). If they got someone who was better at female characters, I'm game.

Not while the show is being run by Moffit.

As far as Doctor being female, I think the first one to suggest it was Tom Baker when he announced he was leaving.

The main thing as long as they are good, whomever takes up the role.

A female Doctor would be fine, but she would either need to be really attractive or still manage to find companions who are female and really attractive. Doctor Who always needs some eye candy.

I have no problem with the Doctor being a dame, but I don't know who this Sue Perkins chick is...

Doctor MUST ALWAYS BE A MAN.  In canon, at least, Time Lords don't change gender when they regenerate.

It's one of the very few things that would cause me to stop watching the show after 30 years (I started as soon as we had a TV, at the very end of Baker/beginning of Davison).  I even suffered through the Russel Davis/David Tennant era.  I watched the god-awful '90s TV movie, although only once and I hated it.  But changing the Doctor that fundamentally?  No.

Except in that Neil Gaiman episode, the Doctor specifically mentioned a Time Lord who regenerated as a woman.
