Not that I'm going to go reading some Twitter feed to find out the details, but if I had to guess, I'd say the senior was average to sucky, the sophomore outclassed him repeatedly, and rather than take it as a learning experience he decided to cost his team a game.

So how many years until we hear about him again on Fark for beating up his son's coach/teammate on peewee hockey?

Most likely some douche that thought he was better than he is and was pissed because he hadn't received any interest from scouts. Face it punk, your future is as a welder or construction worker.

I can actually think of a scenario where that's the right move.  Really a dick move to his teammates.

Yeah...might want to forget any of those potential colleges he wants to attend.  They'll politely tell him that he's not invited to their hockey teams tryouts.

IIRC didn't he just fade away after that?  No MLB club wants a douche like him on the team.

Considering the kid was demoted to backup goalie by his coach, I doubt he would have been getting those calls anyway. The colleges would be going after starters, not backups, since they would be seeing starters more likely on ice when scouting and the scouts don't really care about team politics. They just want a warm body on the ice that can stop pucks from crossing the goal line.

From Wikipedia: Bell left the team on March 29, was released on March 31, and never played in the majors again. The Pirates ended up paying him $4.5 million not to play for them. Bell moved onto his yacht, Bell 14, a 58-foot Sea Ray.

Ha!

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sports columnist Mark Madden summarized the incident with "Derek Bell becomes the ultimate Pirate: Lives on a boat and steals money.

Haha!

What's really funny is that he wasted his money on a Sea Ray, the high-top sneaker of the sea.

Stories like these are one reason I decided to become a coach after my playing days.
The other is, there are so few real goalie coaches at that level, or lower..
Head Coaches always focusing on the Forwards... goalers so rare, they expect
them to be "great" and if they aren't immediately, they no longer focus
on their development or coaching.

Volunteer to Coach if you love this sport, or play it.. it's the only way we'll ever change the outcome of
stories like these.

That's farking awesome.

Regarding this kid... kind of a dick move, I guess, but that was pretty funny. Going to remember that one for a while out in East Bumblefark or wherever this is.

Think it would have been better to post a shut out then tell the coach to go fark himself, but whatever... it's high school. Don't really care.

The animated .GIF of Jack jumping up and down made up for the seconds I wasted, at any rate.

Even funnier if the the hr manager gets the wrong Austin Krause and the guy didnt get the job due to this.
Using google to find out about people for jobs should be against the law,  Better yet not against the law but if they do google people and search for them they should be told you didnt get the job because of this,   I bet we would see some funny lawsuiets come out of it.

What a douche.  Never played hockey, but played keep in soccer and now play it in four different rec leagues (so I'm practically Iker Casillas).  The closest I've come to something like this is a few times, in 11 v. 11, when my team is just dominating the opponent and I'm bored as hell, I'll be intentionally sloppy when clearing the ball, just to get a few more shots against me.  But I'd never do that if the game was close or even if it was the first half.  He deserves an assbeating by his teammates.

+1.  The trend towards no one ever having to pay any consequences for anything they do is a positive development and should be encouraged at all costs.

According to the article other kids on the team knew about it (and said it was fine for him to do it) ahead of time.  Of course this info comes from the goalie, so take it with a grain of salt.

There is probably more to this story, but maybe not.  I know that politics (who the parents of a kid are for example) often dictate playing time rather than ability, so the kid might have had a point, but no one on this board knows.

I'm surprised the article didn't mention any kind of punishment.  AFAIK as a high school athlete you can get detention or suspended for actions at or during an athletic event (even if you are there as a spectator), and I would think this would definitely qualify.

The only situation I can come up with is one where the coach created an incentive for sticking with the team as a backup through junior year by promising that all seniors get to start.  The coach gets the bodies for practice and bench, and the kids get rewarded for their dedication in their senior year.  I never played highschool sports, but I once witnessed a coach go back on that promise because he recruited a star and saw his future game record fill up with Ws.

In that narrow situation, I can't blame the kid.

Apparently this kid is joining the marines...from the twitter page of the team manager:

Ok, I should have posted this before...but the kid sounds like an even bigger douchebag than I thought.

If he's convicted, I'm not sure the marines will take him (I know the Navy won't).
