I always amazes me how much better dressed the unsavory among us were back then. No shirtless, sagging pants for these gentlemen of the criminal underworld.

James Knapton, a 22-year-old miner, was sentenced for six years for setting fire to a stack of oats

William Doyle (left) 17, was described as not being able to read or write and had a pale complexion. He was sentenced to six years in prison for setting fire to a stack of wheat

Apparently grain arson was a big problem back then?

Catherine May was a 26-year-old dressmaker, who was sentenced to three years for stealing a purse.
She died after just five months in prison.

Ugh, how sad.  Look at her face, what a testament to a short, unhappy life.
