Thats a good idea!  I played the original X-Wing game for hours on end.   The TIE game to a lesser extent, but both were a ton of fun.

Yeah!  I hate how space flight sims have died now that we're really getting the graphics and processing ability to make such games look beautiful.  I'd love to play X-Wing Alliance with fully modern graphics.

In my dreams there's an X-Wing/Tie Fighter MMO, a persistent game world with the various systems as "instances". In any given system, there's Imperial v. Rebel dogfighting going on, and every once in a while NPC capital ships appear to either turn the tide of battle, or give the enemy a target to take down (for massive rewards). You can also "quest" alone by accepting jobs to capture freighters, run escort for a Corellian Corvette, etc, very much like the old games.

Players start out with a basic X-Wing or Tie, and gain experience to unlock new ships and various customizations. Advanced players might choose to roll in Tie Bombers or B-Wings to help take down bigger ships, or they might go with A-Wings or Tie Advanced for advanced dog-fighting, but have less shields/armor and be very vulnerable to enemies in dog-fights (especially when outnumbered).

It's doable, even on original (non-CD) version games.

I would love to see an easier-to-use and updated version using up-to-date graphics. Just, please, bring back iMUSE? I miss it. If I wanted to hear the soundtrack, I'd play it on the stereo.

That's what I'm saying.  I have a flight stick and throttle collecting dust.  I'm getting tired crappy console port FPS games and lackluster MMOs.  Let's see a bad ass SW simulator!

Hell, before SWTOR release, people were begging for x-wing style space combat.  They did "tunnel" space combat instead which actually looked pretty decent - but then again, I think people (including myself) were started for Star Wars space combat.  If they had done something that was a cross between EVE and x-wing for the space combat and still had the planet-side MMO toon environment, that game would have been epic.

I could see a good XvT if it went somewhat along the line of IL-2. If you could vary the controls, systems and physics from arcade to realistic (well as real as you could get with a movie based space sim). I would buy any updated XvT in a heartbeat, especially if it had a great single player campaign to go with multi-player quests/missions.

In 2011, LucasArts was hiring for personnel for an "aerial combat game, experience especially with space-based shooters a plus". In 2011, Disney got LucasArts, and have said that all projects are continuing.

A new X-Wing game may be coming.

Wouldn't be surprised if Disney ran LucasArts into the ground to support their new swathes of SW content, though, after the releases of their ongoing projects.

I'd say that is what really killed SWTOR.  They didn't need toon development on launch day.  If all you have on launch day is toon development, you're just WoW in Space.  Had they done dog fighting (it can't be that hard on modern systems, Battlestar Online manages it in a browser window).  Toss in a bit of planet side toon stuff and mention something about expanding it in later expansions.  No one will biatch because they'll be to busy customizing their fighter.

/plus you could make capital ships your "instances" where everyone has different roles

Not only could you have a new Star Wars fighter sim for PC, I think you could adapt the controls of a modern console controller to play as well.  Hell, with Kinect voice commands you could just say most of the commands ("Thrusters to 5, Shields 40%, Target nearest enemy").

/would play it on PC though

Yep.  With modern voice recognition software you could ease up the control scheme a little.  Hell, you could even do it for PC.

I still have my keyboard reference card that came with X-wing around here somewhere (as well as my Mechwarrior 2 one).  Playing those games helped me learn the position of the keys more then any class did.

It was called Jump to Lightspeed, the expansion to the now long-dead SWO MMO.  Although not as authentic as the classic X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, it was passably fun.  I particularly liked that I could craft MY OWN PARTS to upgrade the ship!  I've looked around, and though I found a SWO project, last time I checked on it, JTL still wasn't a working part of it.

I'm still sickened thinking about what SWTOR could have been.  It was enough that the toons didn't have full motion and single lower-level mobs were always tied to a group no matter how far apart they were so when you aggroed one, you aggroed them all.  Then there was the crafting.  I've been crafting the hell out of everything every level then I get to lvl 50 and I'm *given* a full set of gear that is better than anything I've crafted to that point?  What the hell?!  And don't even get me started on augments.

That game could have and should have been so much better.  They had the environment but it just seems like a whole horde of relatively small things could have made it much better...things that many other MMOs had for years before SWTOR.

Also, dear potential makers of a X-wing v TIE Fighter game: please don't give me a Y-wing to protect a bunch of suicidal shuttles from TIE Advanced. Every time critical mission seemed to have you fly out to BFE in a Y-wing, only to have to race back to protect a sitting duck shuttle plus some cargo containers.

Also, don't give us an Imperial gunboat and expect us to take out several renegade TIE Defenders all shooting advanced concussion missiles, without giving us a tractor beam. I loooooooved the Missile Boat. Especially the SLAM motors that left you outrun missiles by draining your laser power. Which they made non-functional in X-Wing Alliance ./my only gripe about that game.
