You know what's amazing?

When Christians keep their religion to themselves they get along great with others.

Instead, they are jamming it anywhere and everywhere they can and complaining when we; both the secular and the religious citizens that like the separation of church and state; ask them to follow the laws of the land.

I'm sorry, but trying to backdoor bypass the First Amendment just isn't going to fly in this country any longer.

The Courthouse in Cumberland co TN has a statue of the Flying Spaghetti Monster on its ground from where some ACLU troll tried sueing then they said they would gladly put up any statue that any religious group wanted to pay for.

That's seriously cool. I would totally show up in Pirate gear and hang Angel Hair Pasta on the statue to show my devotion. Throw grated cheese on passerby to bless them. Ritually slaughter jars of Ragu before the statue to please my God.....

Someone is eventually going to sue (didnt RTFA so excuse me if its been done) - the school district is going to lose badly but not before elevating it through several layers of the court system and spending $10's of thousands of dollars on lawyer fees.

The end result is they will likely cut a few staff positions or eliminate some programs to "pay" for this little adventure.   These results are basically foreordained - the end result is NOT a court order allowing you to keep that picture.  I can't believe there isnt at least ONE person involved who is willing to point out the blindingly obvious and (if pushed by the vocal supporters) be willing to say "I refuse to waste to the districts money on a fight we can not win"....

Why not a portrait of this guy?  He's like a modern-day Jesus who has a cult following too, many of whom who hate gays (but mainly because they're mostly Christian)?

RedTank: Really guys? There should be no religious imagery or influence at all, period, in any public school anywhere. On the other hand X, church, mosque, or temple on x street has every right to be where it is.

You know, I'm not entirely sure about that. Religions exist. They drive many people, casting a major influence on their actions and decisions. Even those people for whom this isn't the case still interact, on an everyday basis, with people for whom it is. If teaching people how to understand each other is a major goal of public education -as many would say it is- then should teaching people about the various religions not be part of that?

People that don't see the different between public and private in their religious tolerance or outrage aren't thinking at a high enough level.

Ah, yes. Because the opposition doesn't think. Right.

I like to think of them as devil-monkey lizard-birds. At the end of their lives they would spend all their remaining energy burrowing down into the earth. They did this because they were the devil's familiars and the devil wanted them to cause confusion as to the true age of Earth / the date of creation. This is why Jesus liked farking them. When he farked them they turned into peacocks; this is why peacocks are beautiful. It is also why they make good guards against evil-doers. Jesus' magic spooge imbued a sense of good and evil and they cry out when evil is nigh.

didn;t read TFA but I suspect it's totally political. The board votes to keep it so the rubes are happy. the courts order taken down so they're the bad guys and provide cover for the board. simple really.

Sounds like someone doesn't understand how school's work.  School's have to pay for their lawyers, they are not free or employed by the local government.  I know one of our local districts use a lawyer in the next town over.

Galvatron Zero: As an atheist...

I really don't understand what the big deal is.  It's just a picture.  Seriously.  To some people, it's the son of god and makes them feel good.  To others... it's just a picture.

There's a church on my street!
I demand it gets torn down!
It offends my senses!

If a picture of Jesus offends you, you have other issues.

/overactive sense of self-entitlement being one...

And if you don't see the greater issue at stake, then you have issues yourself.  See what happens if an Eastern Studies club forms up and wants to hang a portrait of Siva.

I don't really see the problem with this as long as it was art created by a student 65 years ago.

Oldiron_79: fruitloop: Vodka Zombie: It's like they just don't get it.

Weird.

They totally get it.  The Christians get to have their picture of Jesus in the school because the kids wanted it.  Pictures of deities from other religions can be hung too, if there are enough students to form a club (which has to be approved by the school), and the club requests to have a picture (which has to be approved by the school) hung in the space.  How many students that don't practice Christianity attend the middle school in Jackson County, Ohio?  Checkmate.  Amen.

Now that you mention it, pasafarians missed the mark with using spaghetti as their religions symbol.  Imagine the calenders and posters I could have at work if they were religious symbols.  Someone should work on this, and don't be shortsighted and tie it to a specific person's boobs or vajayjay.

No, it's if they ban them putting it up.  That's the supposed infringement.

Google the case about the student with the Jesus love Pot sign or t-shirt.  It was something like that.

Schools, for good or ill, have been allowed for a long time to restrict a student's free speech in the name of order and authority.
