If they drop wrestling, they ought to drop tae kwon do too and add MMA as a replacement.

Fake pro wrestling aside, and not being a fan of amateur wrestling (NTTAWWT), it does seem to be a real sport, and more importantly, it was central to the original Olympics  Removing it while considering badminton, fencing, and synchronized swimming sports seems to border on criminally stupid.

It's actually being pushed aside to make room for Golf.

Golf, which the pro golfers will treat as just another minor tournament before looking forward to The Masters, as opposed to wrestlers who consider the Olympics as the pinnacle of their sport. But, when you are lobbying IOC members, it is easier to make a case by flying them to exotic golf locations than it is taking them to a sweaty gym in Iowa.

Incorrect. Baseball and softball was pushed aside after 2008 to make room for golf and rugby, which will come at the 2016 Games in Rio. Wrestling's drop would not happen until 2020.

And the Russians being angry isn't a surprise. They've won the most wrestling medals of any nation in Olympic history (if we lump the USSR's success with Russia's) and won the most golds in the sport in London last year.

LesserEvil: synchronized swimming

In fairness, synchro is actually REALLY hard to do well, and requires a lot of skill and athleticism.  That said, I do prefer to keep "judged" sports in a separate (read: worse) category from "objective" sports.  If I had my way, we'd do away with the summer and winter olympics and instead alternate the Real Olympics with the Biatch Olympics.  Real Olympics would have sports like swimming, track, bobsled, hockey, speed skating and wrestling while Biatch Olympics would have trampoline, ice dancing, curling, and badminton.

Have you even watched any of these?  It takes a lot of skill and practice to be as good as the people you see in the Olympics.

The badminton teams that got kicked out for purposely sucking must have practiced that for years.

Tiddlywinks and beer pong require mad skillz, too... doesn't make then Olympics-worthy.

Wrestling is a tradition that goes back to ancient Greece. What's next to go? Those boring track and field events?

I think that's part of the point though... the Olympic committee is bringing in sports that CAN be corrupted (meaning more payoffs) as well as sports that are American-centric (because, evil Americans, of course)

We will probably see more judged sports being brought in, as well as any obscure sport that isn't popular in the US.

Curling and badminton are both objective sports. Wrestling, otoh, is a judged sport.

... isn't the real difference the fact that your "biatch" Olympics are all primarily (but not exclusively) women's sports?

Actually, I have a better idea. Why not move a bunch of sports that CAN be played indoors to the Winter Olympics? They suck out loud, so adding wrestling, boxing, fencing, etc, would be a huge improvement. Then you can add fun summer sports like baseball and golf in. Win/win. Profit and happiness for everyone. What's the downside?

Still unbelievable that they'd take out one of the few sports that would have been contested at the ancient games.  I don't care if it doesn't get ratings, wrestling belongs in the Olympics.  It's a sport that a ton of countries actually participate in too.

I totally agree that I'd rather see them take out boxing or taekwondo or judo before taking out wrestling, if they're going to remove a combat sport.

MMA in the Olympics would be hilarious, given how bad boxing judging at the Olympics is.

Hmm ... sports that are based on raw human ability, rather than subjective, fancy ribbon twirling crap that doesn't require as much athleticism.  That's a great idea.  We should have a big international competition every 4 years where each country's best athletes can compete against each other for national pride and bragging rights.  But to make money we'll have to probably add in a few pseudo-sports that get better TV ratings, and ... oops, right back where we started.

Has anyone came up with a good reason to get rid of wrestling?  Other than modern pentathlon having more bribe money of course.

2013-02-13 12:29:23 PM
Have to explain it again.

Getting rid of some things for example synchronized swimming, would NOT free up a spot for another sport.  Synchronized swimming is under the auspices of FINA along with regular swimming, diving, and water polo.  You would have to get rid of all of them to free up another "sport" under current IOC rules.

That's the way things are, judge it the way you wish.  For more info, check out the "Olympic sports" Wikipedia page.  In those charts, each "body" is just one sport regardless of how many disciplines it controls.

If the biggest complaint is that it doesn't get enough ticket sales or TV ratings, maybe they should try scheduling it differently so it doesn't always completely overlap with all of Track and Field, which dominates the TV coverage once it starts.  I would have liked to watch more wrestling this last Olympics, but they never show any of it on the prime-time replays unless its an American going for a medal, and even when it would be live coverage, its relegated to some side channel or online only.

2013-02-13 12:35:29 PM
To make room for wrestling you couldnt simply dump rhythmic gymnastics because it is a game that falls under a larger Sport (as defined by the Olympics) of gymnastics. They wont gt rid of gymnastics. Same with synchro swimming which falls under the "sport" of aquatics which includes swimming synchro swimming diving and water polo. You could make room for wrestling by combining some games into a "sport". You could combine Rowing with kayak/canoe into oarsport or even add sailing for boat sports. Better still combine wrestling, tae kwon do, judo, and boxing together under a "sport" of fighting.

Couldn't have been more surprised if they had said they were doing away with the marathon.
