I wonder which illegal growers bought off the Hawaiian legislature. Or maybe it was the private prison industry that bought them off. Or maybe it was a cabal of growers, prison wardens and born again closeted gays that pooled their money and bought off the legislature.

I need some more tin foil for my hat.

Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

The best trick of being a politician is to get multiple groups to pay you off to do the exact same thing.

Because forcing people hat want to, and will, get high to smoke things that are cheaper like meth has work so well for the state of Hawaii.

How odd. It's not like it's hard to get. My experience is, tourists can buy with impunity. I wonder why they didn't just formally decriminalize.

Come on, my aloha kanaka o Hawaii! The Maui Wowee is no more dangerous- in fact less so- than alcohol! It can't be blamed as a gateway drug. People who are inclined to addiction will do so no matter what the substance, be it food, candy, alcohol or drugs.

The rest of us who are not predisposed to addiction shouldn't be penalized from enjoying a natural plant. My late husband was a mean drunk, I HATED it when he drank alcohol. He was the complete opposite when he smoked.

If there was a referendum, I bet the people of Hawaii would vote yes to legalize.

There were probably consonants in the bill the legislators didn't recognize.

If I lived anywhere remotely close to Hawaii I would be upset.

Because cops and politicians are criminals who hide behind their jobs. There is too much profit in prohibition and too much freedom in granting the serfs legal weed.

If you can't eat their food, screw their women, take their money and then vote against them anyway, you have no business being in politics.

This is not a surprise to me. It is not a coincidence that the states that have legalized have done so through public referendums/initiatives. Politicians are tightly tied to government and those in power; they will always side with police, DEA, the federal government, etc., over the wishes of the common man, unless it is extremely clear that they will lose their job otherwise.

Hawaii will not legalize unless it becomes necessary. The path I see is this: initiatives legalize in California, Oregon and Michigan. By then Colorado and Washington will have legal sales. It will create a critical situation in which the feds must act, it will finally get legalized federally (probably after being a major campaign issue in 2016), and THEN Hawaii will jump on the bandwagon, having been given the all-clear by the feds.

The pressure from legalized sales in states like Washington and Colorado will determine the future course of events.

I once heard a great story about a retiring police sergeant that had quite a bit of weed to share with his guests (including active and retired officers) at his retirement party in Waianae.
