What a boring list. Big deal if Gar from Mask was a composite of multiple characters. Who cares? Were Rocky and Rusty real? Then everyone else is a supporting character anyway. Also, I didn't expect Maximus from Gladiator to be real, nor did I expect DiCaprio's and Winslet's characters in Titanic to be real... Author is trying WAY too hard to put together a list, IMHO.

Who gives a damn...I don't go to movies for historical accuracy...if I find the history interesting after seeing the film, I'll go look it up elsewhere.

Yeah, I'm descended from pretty much all the bad guys in Braveheart, including "Lord Tallmadge" who is a fictionalized version of John de Warrene. That's the English lord at the Battle of Stirling Bridge who says, "The king's terms? He'll never live up to them."

I always get pissed off at the "TRUE STORY" movies where nobody survives to tell the tale like The Perfect Storm or Deep Water. You watch the movie expecting one of them has to survive to tell the tale but nope everybody dies and everything you just watched was nothing more than a fiction.

If you're going to write fiction then write fiction. Don't pretend to be writing fact and then at the last minute go "nope sorry, we just made this whole thing up". That's a great way to piss off your audience. It's almost as bad as "and it was all a dream".

I'd rather see a list of movies "based on a true story" that weren't even close to the real events (see: The Perfect Storm, Behind Enemy Lines, etc).

I saw an interview with the Coen brothers where they said if you say a movie is "based on a true story" you can get away with a lot more suspension of disbelief.

IIRC, they were specifically talking about Fargo.

"Based on a true story" is a far cry from factual documentary.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Psycho were based on the same true story (Ed Gein). I'm sure there are others as well (beyond the sequels to those films).

Didn't click the link did you?  They were throwing in composite characters, and those whose stories different only slightly from the real life characters.  Leatherface is a great example of a "based on a true story" character which has almost no similarity to the real person or events.

Your post didn't have a link, and I did RTFA. If TCSM and Psycho are based on the same story, either one of them took LOTS of liberties with the story, or both borrowed the "murdering psycho with an odd fashion sense" and wrote their own story after that.

Not sure what got your blood up - I just like pointing out that both films are based on the same true story, despite being very different in tone and setting, having different sets of characters (Janet Leigh has no foil in TCSM; and a group of kids never broke down near the Bates Motel) and very different endings (escape of the hero vs discovery/arrest of the killer).

enjoyed the film and then read how much of a POS script it was. A real boxer even sued the filmmakers for making a bout seem fixed in favour of him - a white dude - by supposedly racist judges. The truth was that Denzil's character got his butt kicked in the ring for the fight, fair and square. How do we know this? It was farkin televisied. D'oh!
