This thread will be filled with people who think they're anime fans but
really have absolutely no clue about it or the art form.
Oh they'll list some of the the most common and socially accepted
like Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo or whatever their hipster friend
liked on facebook, whatever they think makes them sound "cool."

You won't see them list real anime titles that show an understanding
of the genre, things like Naruto or Elfen Lied, SD Gundam, Dragonauts or
Urotsukidojdesu.

Really haven't watched any of the crap they play on adult swim. I like the older stuff. Vampire Hunter D, Akira of course, Dominion Tank Police was pretty funny.. "ERECTOCOCKY",

I haven't seen an announcement of who is doing the music yet. If it was Yoko Kanno, I have a feeling it would have already been part of the announcement.

Not that I won't watch this show regardless, but having her on the soundtrack makes every show better.

Loved the Vexille movie. For once, it was an anime film that had a decent story and an ending that didn't devolve into a Shinto pseudo-religious stew or a mix of WTF and "What did I just watch?" (example of this being Elfin Lied, the Final Fantasy movie, etc.)

Last series I watched was Black Lagoon and that was a great show. Liked the GIS series and watched most of the series where I could catch it.

To an untrained eye, sure. To a true anime otaku (connoisseur), Urotsukidoji represents mans constant struggle against the inevitable as no matter how you fight it, you will be raped by tentacles. Be they the tentacles of big government, corporations, or special interest groups they will slither and slide into your lives and squeeze, gaining pleasure from your pain.

Takurou Nakakuni as Saito
Youji Ueda as Paz
Kazuya Nakai as Borma

IIRC SAC occurs 10-15 years after WWIII and just shortly after WWIV (aka The 2nd Vietnam War). Considering the year is 2027 AD, yeah that sounds like a retconning...not sure though.

I don't know what's available on there for anime, but some titles that are worth checking out if you can:
Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Fullmetal Alchemist (either series), Full Metal Panic (first and third seasons in particular).

Those are just some titles that are generally well-liked. If you have more specific criteria (like older series vs. new, or specific genres you enjoy), I could probably give you some better suggestions.

That's a difficult question to answer. Others here are going to list a lot of the commonly accepted shows already, so I'll go ahead and say you should pop over myanimelist.net, enter in the name of a show you've seen and liked, then scroll down to the Recommendations section. This'll show you what people who liked your show, also suggest.

You can potentially find those titles streaming via Netflix or Crunchyroll (has an xbox app).

A live action GitS would be nice, based on the first animated movie. Of course ignorant people would say that it was a ripoff of The Matrix at this point. I'd love to see a live action Hellsing although they'd have to tone down the violence to get an R rating.

I'm finding as I get older I'm enjoying watching...happier things. While a show (be it anime or whatever) may be good and I'm sure I'd like it, if it has any dark drama or tragedy then I tend to avoid it nowadays. I've never seen Higurashi, for example, and as much as I loved RahXephon I doubt I'll ever watch it again.

Lately I've been watching things like Maoyu, SAO, Gintama, etc...

The sad thing about Elfen Lied is that most people don't realize it's a love story at the core, and what happens when that love is rejected.

I'm all over the place on my anime likes... Mostly I like a good story, or good action. Or just plain goofy (FLCL/Excel Saga). I wish that Hellsing Ultimate wasn't so goddamn expensive and hard to find... I've only seen up to episode 7...

I always thought Elfen Lied was about who judges what, or who, is human. About how the main protagonists are FAR more human than those they encounter (the little girl's parents as one example).

What's amazing about something like Naruto is how some communities utterly lose their shiat if you try to talk about it. Elfin Lied is just shortly behind it in that regard.

So i make sure to talk about it often with said communities. I keep a score board at home of the short terms bans as a result of daring to say something nice.

Love the GITS universe, there a lot of great story possibilities in it. Probably the closest thing we'll see to a popularized version of Neuromancer.

IIRC, Togusa was a detective before he was recruited by Section 9.

Pff, such a mainstream weeaboo, desu. MY favorite anime is a field-hockey themed high school sports harem comedy, which only has four fans outside of Japan. I have to personally fly there every quarter to buy fan-subbed bootleg DVD's of it (not that I need those because I learned flawless Japanese in order to fully appreciate their rich culture) from a homeless man at the Osaka train station, as well as visit my favorite cat cafe.

Everyone else here might as well be extolling the virtues of their Disney-distributed "Totoro" DVD with American celebrity voice acting. Ooh, Claire Danes, desu.

BronyMedic: Please be in the SAC universe. Plllleeeeaaasssssee!!!

Yes. This. So much this. SAC already kinda sorta touched upon Motoko's backstory too..

Yuri Futanari: I hope not, I put like zero effort into it.

Just goes to prove how easy it is, really. If you left it at Elfen Lied and SD Gundam I may have considered it, to be honest... at least until I saw your handle. You've got potential!

Now for the obligatory... haven't really watched anything in over a year since nothing really seemed to appeal, but then again sometimes seemingly-unappealing things are actually really, really good.

Kaiba
Eden of the East
Katanagatari
No. 6
Moyashimon
The Tatami Galaxy
Usagi Drop
Planetes
Kamichu!

I think that's a fairly good starter list for "something unexpected, in a good way."

*coughs* Now that that's out of the way...

I'll be more than happy with this if they show how Section 9 was formed as well. Yeah, I know Togusa had just joined them at the beginning of SAC, but it'd be interesting to see how they chose him for the job as well.

You're probably thinking of Sou Sou (chinese name Cao Cao) who is a general, not a Queen.

Three Kingdoms stuff (Ikkitousen, Koihime+Muso, Qwan, etc) is difficult to keep track of unless you know Chinese history. Especially when they try to cover all of the characters and interactions.

Just to be clear, it's Shinichiro Watanabe from Bebop working on this and not Nabeshin from Excel Saga, although that would certainly be interesting.

The production staff is what got me to check it out. The fact that it focuses primarily on jazz music is a bonus.

I actually got around to watching Excel Saga within the past few months, and so I definitely see what you're saying. "Interesting" would be an understatement with Nabeshin. So, yeah, I did check the director name when you mentioned the series. As stereotypical as liking it is, I did enjoy the way the music tied in with the episodes in Cowboy Bebop, and I hope this one has more of the same.

NeoCortex42: ferretman: I have always enjoyed anime and I have see numerous titles available through x-box. Unfortunately I do not know enough about the very numerous titles to know which ones are any good. Any suggestions on ones I should check out?

I don't know what's available on there for anime, but some titles that are worth checking out if you can:
Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Fullmetal Alchemist (either series), Full Metal Panic (first and third seasons in particular).

Those are just some titles that are generally well-liked. If you have more specific criteria (like older series vs. new, or specific genres you enjoy), I could probably give you some better suggestions.

I'll add Ninja Scroll (movie) and Trigun (series). Bebop and Champloo are probably the best of the bunch though, with Bebop eclipsing them all by a wide margin.

The dub of that is awesome. They hired a really good voice actor that could handle the craziness of the part. For that matter, Hellsing (both series) has a really good dub as well, especially Jan Valentine's Introduction (minor spoiler). I watched GitS:SAC exclusively on dub.

What I'm saying is that most English dubs are pretty good nowadays. There are some exceptions, like Naruto, but don't blindly follow the "death before dub" mantra.

The best thing: Goda not only got what was coming to him, if you look back you realize he really, really deserved worse. Those who have read JD Salinger know that Goda matches the physical description of the Laughing Man exactly. That man had been pulling the strings nationwide, and at Section 9, for years before he showed up in the series.

I hope they don't fark this movie up too badly. Motoko's past is pretty much established, they can't touch too much of it during the wrong time or it just won't sit well with the fans.

I enjoyed the Live Action version of Yamato that came out a year or two ago - thought it really captured the visual style.

A live action GitS would be nice, based on the first animated movie. Of course ignorant people would say that it was a ripoff of The Matrix at this point. I'd love to see a live action Hellsing although they'd have to tone down the violence to get an R rating.
