hulk hogan meat shoes: eddievercetti: Dr Jill Biden? Is she more credible than Dr Dre and Dr Pepper?

She has a PhD in education. Why she's always called Doctor is beyond me. People with PhDs who insist on being called Doctor are the worst.

I'm sorry, I spent eight years doing intensive study and research, and preparing a manuscript that was required to be a significant contribution to the research literature, while the MD I'm seeing tomorrow went to four years of vocational school and a yearlong internship to be allowed to practice medicine. You're damned right that you'd better call me Doctor.

Remind us of Obama's military record.

He's the Commander in Chief whose orders have resulted in the death of dozens of members of Al-Qaeda.  He's wrapped up one war and is winding down another.  His use of soft power allowed the broadest political change in the history of the Middle East.  And Bin Laden is sleeping with the fishes.

And he did it all without shiatting himself.

Peter von Nostrand: If Ted is the voice of reason for your side of the debate, you're farked

Luckily, he isn't.

Actually, as a gun owner I'm actually feeling that the person that's most on "my side" here is  Obama.  Sure, I disagree with him on the AWB and to a lesser extent the magazine-capacity stuff, but while the vocal elements of the left are going into hallucinatory paroxysms that make my worst acid trip look benign without showing any interest in the facts and the vocal elements of the right are gearing up in their bunkers with only the occasional emergence of a pith helmet to show they're still alive, the President is as usual in the middle actually gathering suggestions,  real experts (not the AWs used on both sides) and data and actually trying to address a real problem in an effective but constitutional manner.

As it has been the last four years, the president is the only goddamned adult in DC.

Lionel Mandrake: Except for Loughner, who was taken down when he stopped to reload.

That and it's helpful in the general sense to lessen the amount of time bullets can by flying through the air. I just watched a video of a guy reloading an AR-15 in about seven seconds, but I'll round it up to ten to account for the pandemonium of your first mass killing spree. Our non-hypothetical gunman is in a room full of kindergartners, and takes four seconds to target each child and pop two rounds in its chest (this is the most horrific math question I've ever seen). So for a thirty round magazine, he takes down fifteen kids in sixty seconds, then takes ten to reload.

That high-capacity mag has a downtime of about 14.3%.

With a ten round magazine, he kills five kids in twenty seconds, then takes ten to reload. To kill the fifteen, he would need to spend a minute shooting and thirty seconds reloading, making his downtime about 33.3%. With the high capacity magazine, he could kill forty-five children in 3m30s. With smaller magazines, he would need to spend 4m30s doing the same horrific act, so the simple fix of limiting magazine sizes reduces the effectiveness of mass murdering psychopaths by about 28.6%, just in the amount of kindergarteners they can shoot in a given time frame.

Given that the first few minutes are the most crucial while waiting for law enforcement, any delay saves a number of lives that wouldn't have been saved otherwise. Limiting magazine size is at its very worst a minor annoyance for legal gun owners on the level of a shoelace coming untied, and at its best will save a handful of kindergarteners the next time someone loses their mind.

Right now Rubio is in a room somewhere digesting the damage he just did to his political career with this disaster of a speech. He was obviously very nervous and the water grab is already exploding on the internet. I seriously thought he was going to to be the young hotshot politician who was going to demonstrate his skill and swagger to a national audience. What I saw was a guy in a freshman speech class struggling to read a poorly written speech off a teleprompter.

You know what I have noticed about the two speeches? The SOTU address while being some talking points was mostly uplifting and mostly inspiring. The republican rebuttal speech was incredibly somber and very downer. Yes there were a few uplifting parts to it but most of it was in a negative tone and dire in some of its warnings and predictions. I think this just goes to show the differences of vision between the two parties and how they view the world and the changes going on around them.

also Marco Rubio is a douchenozzle of the utmost extreme and tapping a Latino to do the rebuttal speech wont garner the GOP any of the Latino vote, nice try guys.

Darth_Lukecash: Keep in mind, the second amendment was created because we had no standing army... The civilians and local militias were our defense.

"Yet we've also always had gun control. The Founding Fathers instituted gun laws so intrusive that, were they running for office today, the NRA would not endorse them. While they did not care to completely disarm the citizenry, the founding generation denied gun ownership to many people: not only slaves and free blacks, but law-abiding white men who refused to swear loyalty to the Revolution.

For those men who were allowed to own guns, the Founders had their own version of the "individual mandate" that has proved so controversial in President Obama's health-care-reform law: they required the purchase of guns. A 1792 federal law mandated every eligible man to purchase a military-style gun and ammunition for his service in the citizen militia. Such men had to report for frequent musters-where their guns would be inspected and, yes, registered on public rolls."

I find it best to remind people that the gun control debate isn't an academic hypothetical. If someone truly believes that it is their inalienable right to have a thirty-round magazine because otherwise they will suffer a minor inconvenience when they're shooting at beer cans in their backyard, they should be aware that a psychotic mass murderer will be twice as effective at gunning down children when the next inevitable mass murder takes place.

But hey, don't tread on me and all that. Land of the free, home of the brave.

A Dark Evil Omen: Maximum Snark: You know what I have noticed about the two speeches? The SOTU address while being some talking points was mostly uplifting and mostly inspiring. The republican rebuttal speech was incredibly somber and very downer. Yes there were a few uplifting parts to it but most of it was in a negative tone and dire in some of its warnings and predictions. I think this just goes to show the differences of vision between the two parties and how they view the world and the changes going on around them.

Doomsaying is not popular in politics. The Republicans have trapped themselves in a downward spiral of doom and gloom that there is no way for them to pull out of without alienating a significant portion of their base that is convinced that only a fascist junta (though they would adamantly reject the term) can save the country from the depredations of everyone who isn't them. It's probably not impossible for them to find someone with an inspiring, positive message (even if it's forged entirely of lies and bullshiat) but that person would have almost no chance to survive the primaries. At the presidential level, the next election - at least - is the Dems' to lose, and the Republicans are threatening themselves with losses at the Congressional level that will only deepen if the Dems don't fark up their own position.

I completely agree here, I just find it striking how opposing the two tones are from one another. And yes some of the "sunshine and rainbows" the democrats talk if is just as much bullshiat as the "fire and brimstone" that the republicans talk of, but in total, which message would you rather here? one of "yeah there are some problems, but working together and not being selfish can get us to a better place, also this place is great and look at all these great things happening", or one of "we are totally broken as a country, and we have this huge debt that we have to pay off now or we will become the next third world country, oh and our president is a terrible person who believes in moral compass ideas diametrically opposed to this countries values, we are all doomed!"?

And all these things really bug me. I really wish we had a center left and a center right party split. it would be better for the country if we did. When one party goes off the deep end and becomes a party of paranoid fanatics we lose one end of the debate and we get what we have now, completely disfunctional government. ugh. The repubs need to just eject the entire leadership of their party and distance themselves from the tea party fanatics. then maybe we can get back to a normalized governmental working idea

She has a PhD in education. Why she's always called Doctor is beyond me. People with PhDs who insist on being called Doctor are the worst.

You know that PhD "doctors" pre-date MD "doctors".

He's jealous because they have tenure.

Nope. I know PhDs who are adjuncts.

There are also plenty of PhDs in other fields who work jobs other than teaching. A PhD isn't trivial to get. Damn straight I'm going by 'Doctor'.

Me too, I didn't realize we had so many on Fark.

I see quite a few PhDs in the threads about grad school programs that pop up now and then.  There's quite a few smart guys and gals outside the politics tab.

/Now if only I could join the ranks of the gainfully employed...

I was really lucky to get the job I have now - year 1 of the tenure track is hell. I can only imagine what February will be like in year 4 or 5, depending on if I decide to go up for tenure early.

I'm just starting to do a literature search to try to get published, trying to fill the one hole in my resume, hoping to move from adjunct part-timer to full-time assistant professor.  Any tips?

I'm in a very different field (although someone taking classes in my program is in speech path/audiology and is president of the faculty senate), but here's what worked for me:

-research the hell out of the uni you're applying to, and tailor your SOI to it
-highlight the professional experience you have, and how it will help serve your students
-have a clear research agenda, and outline how you can achieve it. I'm achieving mine by charging fees for full-day trainings, etc., and using that to pay for postage to send postcards recruiting participants in survey research, instead of through grants.
-have a good teaching philosophy statement.
-even if you aren't that sparkling of a personality, you'd better shine when you get called to a campus visit
-apply for the jobs you think you have a shot at - make sure you're a good fit. The one I took was the one I first applied for, and I had an offer within 27 days of going on the market (a record for my school).
-be willing to move to BFE for a few years to really establish yourself, and realize that you might be there for up to 10 years - but after that, you can move on.

I don't think our audiology dept is hiring, but I might be able to call in a favor with that student and see if she'll give feedback on your application package.

what_now: melopene: what_now: You haven't made better loans, B- rock. You've cancelled the subsidized loan for grad school

Yeah, and that is really hurting programs like mine, now that state funding is being tied to metrics like SSCH.

I'm going to be very interested to see what comes out with that College Scorecard - especially how honest they are of the true quality (or lack thereof) of the for-profit and online higher education ripoffs.

it will absolutely pointless. In the past 5 years, we've put a huge administrative burden on schools to prove they deserve to use federal loans. The amount of reporting and auditing required is insane, and yet terrible diploma mills STILL get these funds. They won't cancel anyone's Title IV funding, they'll just make my job harder.

Diploma mills are making the legitimate programs in which I teach less marketable, because people want to take the easy way out, not actually get a useful education. I truly believe that any degree from an online-only program or a for-profit university come with a * next to them.

I thought that was Congress, but yeah, that whole spiel about how to fix education was utterly bunk.

Yep. ANNNNNDDDDD They raised the loan rates up to 6.8% and consolidation doesn't average out the rates it makes them all the highest one. Thanks. That helps so much.

Yeah, my interest rate was 6.8 and I was in school during the Bush administration.

I have undergrad and grad school rates. If I want to consolidate them, all my lower interest rates don't get averaged anymore. Everything automatically goes to the highest rate. There is no point of doing it anymore.

Seeing as how Ted Nugent told the President to "suck on my machine gun" and that Clinton should "ride it into the sunset", I'd say he's pretty mentally ill, which means that assuming Ted Nugent wants to keep his guns, Ted Nugent isn't on Ted Nugent's side.

Most people want the high magazine capability gone. There is no logical need for it outside a military/police

The assult rifle is really the only thing that's Congreve

Rhetorical question: If there's no logical need for 10+ round magazines among non-police, why do the police need them? If 10 rounds should always be enough to take control of any life-threatening situation civilians might find themselves in, why would the police ever need more than that?

Assault rifles are not the same thing as assault weapons, by the way. An assault rifle is a true military selective-fire weapon. "Assault weapon" is a legal term the gun control advocates came up with to impose regulations on civilian grade sport rifles that have "scary-looking" features like detachable magazines, pistol grips, and telescoping stocks.

If there are truely no difference in the rifles performance with theses features, then you won't miss them, and a regular rifle will do. Unless you need that fold out stock to conceale the weapon from the deer. Have that 30 rounds, in case a herd is armed, and a flash suppressor so you won't give away your position to the squirrels.

Keep in mind, the second amendment was created because we had no standing army... The civilians and local militias were our defense.

You can have arms, just not everyone.

Fark, as a community, has a very complex stand on gun control. Youve got your pro NRA shills, your libertarian ITGs, and a full spectrum of gun control advocates all the way from better background checks to taking away everything but hunting rifles.

Good luck finding a "side" to troll.

To expand that spectrum, we have the pants shiatting afraid of guns types, the violence policy center shills, the constitutional and historical revisionists, the authoritarian "liberals", the people who for some reason project their penis size onto responsible gun owners, the people who can't get the terminology right, the people who ignore data that should otherwise dispel their irrational fear of certain guns, the people who can't articulate what they would ban or why they would ban it. Et farking cetera

snowjack: Honest question

No it's not. It's a trap question. Don't be an ass.

No one but no one, including LM, has said "Let's take away ALL the guns." The MOST extreme thing we've been hearing from anyone making actual proposals, is "Let's limit magazine size and require a universal background check."

Anything more than that - anyone worried about or talking about getting rid of the 2nd amendment, for example - is just strawman arguments made by people who can't reasonably oppose what's actually on the table.

That's why I said 99% of the time, there are rare exceptions to the rule.  In the case of Sandy Hook, it wouldn't have mattered if the guy had a single shot rifle.

I'll have to take your word for it.  I'm not privy to how things unfold in alternate universes.

Honest question: do you support the 2nd amendment at all? Do you think Americans should have the right to own and carry any guns?

Yes.  But I believe that like all other rights, the 2nd Amendment has limits (unless you believe in the over-the-counter sale of howitzers without a background check, or something).   I simply draw that line in a different place than people like Ted Nugent.

Do you automatically assume that everyone with a differing opinion is a gun-grabber who wants to ban all firearms?

Most people?  The fact that some (Including Obama) are trying for a magazine ban just goes to prove how farking stupid people are on the issue.   What difference would  nine ten round magazines make over three thirty round magazines in the Case of Sandy Hook, the Batman theater shooting, Columbine, or 99% of the other mass shootings in the country?  Life is not a movie, where you flank the enemy and take them out when they stop to reload.

Except for Loughner, who was taken down when he stopped to reload.

Obama is for a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines.

No, he'll just sit there with Stockman where they'll both do some minor attention-whoring, hoping to recreate some Joe Wilson "you lie" magic on their own. Problem is that's been done before, and lacking any particular wit or cleverness they won't be able to do much besides leave most people with the impression that they're immature disrespectful little twits. Nothing noteworthy will happen unless one of them gets really frustrated that they're being ignored by Obama and the Secret Service.

Unfortunately the TV directors will make sure some of their cameras are pointed at them the whole time in the hopes that something weird will happen, so we'll be treated to continuous views of Nugent's American-Flag-and-Camouflage fashion ensemble, untrimmed eyebrow and nose hair, and whatever stupid hat he decides to keep on his head the whole time.

No he won't.  He'll start backing away from this fight like he has every other one over the last four years.  Expect lots of bland platitudes about moderation being the best and a clear avoidance of a stand on the sequester.

I don't know.  I'm hoping Obama calls him out, and asks him how HE would solve the gun violence problem.  Can't imagine Ted could do anything after that other than look like a lunatic.

Yeah, that'll play well on TV: the President attacking people in a forum where they can't talk back.  I can think of no quicker way for the Democrats to lose all support on addressing gun violence.
