Darth_Lukecash: Keep in mind, the second amendment was created because we had no standing army... The civilians and local militias were our defense.

"Yet we've also always had gun control. The Founding Fathers instituted gun laws so intrusive that, were they running for office today, the NRA would not endorse them. While they did not care to completely disarm the citizenry, the founding generation denied gun ownership to many people: not only slaves and free blacks, but law-abiding white men who refused to swear loyalty to the Revolution.

For those men who were allowed to own guns, the Founders had their own version of the "individual mandate" that has proved so controversial in President Obama's health-care-reform law: they required the purchase of guns. A 1792 federal law mandated every eligible man to purchase a military-style gun and ammunition for his service in the citizen militia. Such men had to report for frequent musters-where their guns would be inspected and, yes, registered on public rolls."

Which topics will FOX say that Obama "failed" to mention? Bengazhi? Best Korea? I'm sure that they have a checklist so they can complain about something as soon as he stops speaking.

God Is My Co-Pirate: Drinking game rules?

I remember when we were all drawing our drinking words out of the hat during the debates, and some poor bastard drew "small business." I imagine he's blind now.

This. Whar drinking rules, whar?

Nuge interrupts: Finish the glass.
Nuge gets hmself tazed: Chug the bottle.

Boehner sleeps or crys, drink! Pelosi blinks, drink!

Lionel Mandrake: I agree.  But I also think the reaction against these proposals is even more hysterical.  And accomplishing almost nothing is synonymous with accomplishing  something.  No one with two or more functioning brain cells thinks that these moderate proposals are going to usher in a new era of vastly reduced gun violence, but it's a step.

And I think that many defenders of the status quo (and those who even want to loosen restrictions) are proving themselves to be pretty stupid for letting morans like LaPierre and Nugent take center stage for them.

I don't disagree with all the proposals, but I do think outlawing some convenient/comfort features of some rifles just because they 'look scary' is really dumb, and I think that as a responsible gun owner, I should continue to be able to buy the 17 round replacement magazines that came standard with my handgun.

I do wince when I hear the words "tyranny" and references to watering the tree of liberty and all that craziness. But what to do, besides not giving the NRA money? What we need is a 24-hour news channel for moderates. LOL :-)

There's a lot of time before this thread goes live at 8pm. Could we please have a little co-operation and not make this an all-out gun thread leading into the main page? There are many other subjects to cover, make drinking rules for.

I sent Obama a pro-gun-rights letter, and mentioned that I voted for him twice, and contributed to his campaign (I know he probably can't verify the vote, but it's true). I'm hoping I'm not the only one.

Maybe he won't focus too much on the new gun proposals. Aw hell, who am I kidding. At least we got some healthcare reform out of the deal.

FNA: So I will be taking on the media orgy following the State of the Union Address." ...Nugent said the media does not realize he is a "force to be reckoned with" and therefore he will "dominate them." ...Nugent added that he would be outspoken after the event but "remain respectful to the office of the presidency and the event itself."

That's about what I expect. If Mr. Nugent wants to make an ass of himself I'm sure some media outlet will give him all the rope he wants to hang himself with. I doubt he'll create any outbursts tonight during the SOTU address itself.

2013-02-12 05:15:23 PM
I think he'll probably tie together immigration, economy and climate change. I don't see firearms policy being a big part of the SOTU tonight. Its a lot easier to make those connections and transitions--since Marco Rubio is giving the Republican response, I'm willing to bet Obama is going to go balls to the wall on immigration primarily, and then the economy secondarily will be targeted to undercut the Rand Paul Teabaggers.

Drinking Game Rules:

Take a drink if:

Obama says the nation is "Strong"
When Obama says "bi-partisan"
When Obama mentions his wife

Take two drinks if:

Republicans clap for the President
Obama makes a joke that people laugh at

Take three drinks if:

Robert Mendez comes with a hooker
Sam Alito punches the Justice in front of him
Someone boos the President

Finish your drink if:

Ned Nugent gets thrown out for being Ned Nugenty

I don't know.  I'm hoping Obama calls him out, and asks him how HE would solve the gun violence problem.  Can't imagine Ted could do anything after that other than look like a lunatic.

Is there ANY situation where Nugent doesn't look like a lunatic.
